When I did a TV show a few years ago, there was a French woman who had moved from France to Santa Barbara.
She talked about how she leaked all the time, and she couldn't run because she would just pee her pants.
And I thought, “There's got to be a way for her to get help.”
This reminds me of women suffering in silence and the fact that doctors don't understand female anatomy.
To put on my empathy hat, as a surgeon, it’s true that doctors don't get any education in menopause at all (not even in nutrition).
At least that’s what’s happening in America.
I didn't get any training in anatomy, (vaginal anatomy was not stressed as much as the male anatomy) and the pelvic floor.
There was also no discussion about the trauma of childbirth.
So here’s a quick patriarchy talk:
Penis is a word that we consider to be… well just penis.
But when it comes to vagina, this face pops up in my brain:
And I have to unlearn that along with all the things that came from my childhood, because as a woman helping women live their best lives, I want to say that there is always hope…
Even if as young girls, we were never taught that the knight in shining armor on the white horse is really YOU.
With the whole Cinderella complex and the media telling us that healing is outside of ourselves, 30 million women are suffering from chronic pelvic pain, with debilitating symptoms like urine leaking, painful sex, prolapse, and weak or non-existent orgasms.
And almost nobody ever wants to talk about it.
But Isa Herrera and I will.
In today’s episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast, I’m with a licensed physical therapist as well as an expert in integrated pelvic floor therapies, Isa Herrera as we show you how to give your lady parts the first aid and love that they need to be happy.
Isa pioneered the use of integrative modalities like Maya massage, cold laser therapy, sound healing and Andean energy techniques with evidence-based physical therapy in ways that had never been done before. She's also the author of five books on the topics of pelvic floor dysfunction and pain, including the international bestseller, Female Pelvic Alchemy.
After suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction herself after her daughter was born, Isa has made it her life's mission to help 1 million women overcome pelvic floor dysfunction.
During the podcast, we discussed the trauma of childbirth and her path to pelvic pain relief PLUS:
And stay to the end to find out how sexual trauma can be stored in the pelvic floor.

Once a year, I give myself the permission to just have whatever.
I'm not perfect.
I'm pretty good at my diet most days of the year, but once in a while, I'll go off the rails.
Mexican food is my favorite, so on one of my birthdays, I had a burger with some cheese on it, french fries, and two milkshakes.
And the next day, I had shoulder pain that I never had.
Then I realized it's probably because of the combination of sugar and dairy.
Usually if I eat crappy food, I don't feel the effects for a couple of weeks, but I felt that one the next day, which made me think that I can't out-supplement a bad diet.
I take supplements for my overall health, and I recommend you do too.
But how much can you really take, and more importantly how can you stay consistent especially if you’re like me who would get really tired of taking a lot of pills?
Dr. Sharzad Green and I discuss that and more in today’s episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast: Supplementation for Menopause Part 2.
During the podcast, we discuss how to pick the best supplements PLUS:

I would never buy an over the counter hormone without expert advice.
The closest thing I come to is phytoestrogens like flaxseeds, and it’s something you can’t really take too much.
We have been taught by the medical establishment that a pill can fix our symptoms, but I’m a firm advocate of taking nutrients from whole foods.
But since carrying a container of bone broth everyday is not really convenient for most of us, how can we get supplements like calcium, vitamin D, and fatty acids without breaking the bank while avoiding adverse side effects?
As Dr. Sharzad Green says, “It’s better to do it scientifically rather than shoot in the dark.”
Dr. Green is a pharmacist who received her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona in 1990. For the past 20 years, her practice has been laser focused on women's health and integrative medicine.
And in today’s episode of The Best of Menopause Movement Podcast, we’re going to talk about Supplementation for Menopause Part 1 and answer your questions like:
Should I really eat dairy?
How often should I take melatonin so I can sleep through the night?
Should I be careful with my collagen intake?
And much more.
During the podcast, we start off talking about permission, and how we are programmed to wait for permission as women PLUS:
Tune in today and find out your supplement options for better health!

[03:35] How I felt after cutting my hair short
[06:42] Why a vibrant sex life affects women

How many of us have the urge to pee and be like, “Oh, I’ve just got to finish washing these dishes?” As a surgeon, it was always a wrong thing to scrub out of an operation to go to the bathroom, but something clicked in me about 5 or 7 years into my practice and I said, “I’m gonna pee when I need to pee and it’s okay.” It’s okay to choose yourself too, because your body is your companion. And awareness is the first step to healing it. I talk more about that in today’s episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast with self-love sage and author, Nicole C. I’m 57 and I'm really proud of my body. I'm proud of the life I've created, and it’s thanks to menopause. Menopause taught me that it’s not just a phase… It’s a privilege of a long life. Privilege of a long life is such a great thing that even though I had such an existential crisis, it brought me to learning my own personal mastery. When you start to find your personal “Why” you begin to do things for yourself and not to please other people. That’s when you start to glow. I talk about more of that with TEDx speaker, podcaster, beauty biohacker, and Clubhouse and Instagram influencer, Elizabeth Molina.

[17:00] The different ages to fall into menopause
[22:00] The Molina Glow
[25:38] How to embrace transition
[29:20] What surrender looks like
[33:05] The “Why” behind Elizabeth’s beauty routine
About the Guest:
Elizabeth Molina is a TEDx Speaker, Beauty Guru, Podcaster, Expert on all things Beauty, and Founder of Molina Glow. She’s a certified Holistic Health and Life coach, a former medical sales specialist, and ranked Top 3 nationally in sales in the pharmaceutical arena. “What the hell is happening to me?” was what I said when menopause hit me. Going through the symptoms can be a lonely journey especially if you don’t know where to start or how to manage them. The body has the ability to heal itself and since balancing hormones is an industry belief, I don’t want to brush off some women who can't take hormones, because it’s possible to get balanced by making lifestyle changes. And yet hormone replacement therapy is a fantastic option especially if your doctor understands and recommends a treatment plan based upon your story. Fasting for me was always steeped in religion. I was raised Catholic and during my teenage years, I would fast trying to prove my loyalty to God. As I went through medicine, I discovered that intermittent fasting can actually be helpful. In fact, we're seeing more research on it than ever before and it’s more prevalent in the media. We've had pretty good success in the Menopause Movement with women who tried it as some of them dropped around 30-35 pounds. If you’ve been thinking of trying intermittent fasting, this episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast is for you.

[3:45] What is intermittent fasting?
[5:43] Types of fasting
