Henry Burnett was the last man to be hanged in Scotland, at 8.00 am on Thursday, 15 August 1963, the 21-year-old was executed on Britain's newest gallows in front of a crowd of 200 people. Executioner Harry Allen and his assistant Samuel Plant performed the hanging. Shortly afterwards, Burnett's body was buried in an unmarked grave within the walls of the prison.
