This Sunday we will take a look at one of the more challenging stories in the gospels. A rich man came to Jesus, asking how to get into the kingdom of God. Jesus instructed him to sell all of his possessions, give all the money to the poor, and follow Jesus. The man went away grieving because he had too many possessions, and could not give them up. What do we make of this story today? What would you do if Jesus asked you to give up everything? Is it possible that Jesus asks too much? This Sunday is World Communion Sunday, a time when we celebrate our oneness with Christians of all denominations around the world. We will welcome guest preacher Rev. Bonnie Osei-Frimpong, who will bring us a message about the risk we face of falling prey to false teachings, and the call on Disciples to be wise and discerning in curating our lives of faith. We must be wary of where dominant culture undermines the Gospel. Bonnie's three children will bring us special music during the worship service. In Mark's gospel, the disciples have a hard time understanding who Jesus really is. Time and time again, Jesus predicts that he will be betrayed, die, and rise again -- and  time and time again, the disciples just don't get it. In this scripture passage, the disciples dismiss the news of Jesus's impending death with a debate about which of them is the greatest. But Jesus turns their expectation about who's the greatest upside down using the example of a child. Where are we blind to what's in front of us? What needs to happen so we can see the true story? This week, we find Jesus among his disciples. Our passage acknowledges that Jesus is human and the “Son of Man.” So, who are you? The question of identity is one we face both as individuals and as communities. Our self-understanding shapes or can shape our actions. Likewise, our actions can help shape our identity. The value of identity is that it often comes with purpose. Join us this Sunday as we explore our purpose and continue Jesus’ walk with his disciples in Mark’s gospel. This Sunday, we will take a look at Jesus's encounters with two specific people requesting healing: the Syrophoenician woman, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, and the deaf-mute man. These people had something in common besides needing healing - both of them were Gentiles, from outside the Jewish community. The stories are very different, and yet in both cases Jesus provided healing and the people overflowed with gratitude.
