He considers his leadership style more of a “players coach” since he teaches but is also willing to demonstrate as necessary. Derek’s focus is on team emotional health and empowerment with his transparency and understanding of the power of trust and relationships to accomplish the mission. He continues to dedicate time to learn about leadership through continued formal training, podcasts, and reading.

On this week’s episode, I chat with an Air Force friend, Becky Heyse, who I met very early on in my career and continues to impress me with her leadership skills as well as her authenticity. Becky is a public affairs officer in the U.S. Air Force. During her 12-year career she has served in a variety of roles and locations around the world serving as an official spokesperson for senior leaders, leading teams of more than 20 people and serving as a mentor to Afghan government officials. She is currently a student at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
During our chat, we dive into her discovery of self awareness as a leader as well as learning how to focus on her strengths instead of trying to offset her weaknesses. This is a great episode for anyone trying to figure out how to learn more about themselves while leading a team.

PS: Also, there is a point in the episode where I completely mess up a quote! This is the quote I was trying to reference: Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. -Albert Einstein

On this week’s episode, I hang out with my badass fitness friend, Maggie Hamilton, who recently started her first leadership position as the Director of Operations and Development at Class Studios in Dallas, TX. Listen to our conversation as we talk about her experiences starting out as a leader, what she expected, what she actually experienced and what she is hoping to do for the future. Her drive (and triceps) are the strongest I’ve ever seen. This is great for anyone who is thinking about going into leadership and wants to know what some obstacles might be. This episode will be one of many as we join Maggie on her journey to learn to lead.

Several months ago, I found a stack of my grandfather’s notes and speeches my dad gave me. My grandfather, Floyd Greco, worked his way up from being an hourly worker to a senior executive at ALCOA and he was extremely passionate about leadership, encouraging everyone to “Make it Happen” Although he passed away in 1996, his legacy continues among his kids and grandkids with how he motivated others. This speech, read by my dad, Chris Greco, is one he wrote based on his “Make it Happen” methodology. When I thought about adding it to the show, my dad said it would have been a dream come true to hear his work shared with the world. So here it is world, go “Make It Happen.”

In today's episode, I sit down with my first boss...first leader ever, Ken Bryson, to talk about his experience from his over 25-year U.S. Air Force career and what he learned as a leader. Ken is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and one of the best leaders I ever had.
This episode is perfect for anyone learning how to prepare when you’re a leader, tips on how to keep a notebook (yes this might seem simple but his technique has some interesting tricks!), and inspiration for how to keep going when you might feel stuck in a role.
Grab something to take notes because you’re going to want to remember some amazing things Ken discusses!

Lead Into It is a leadership podcast for managers, emerging leaders, and professionals who are trying to figure out how to lead well without completely losing themselves in the…
I'm Sara Greco: a leadership coach, Air Force leader, and someone who has spent a lot of time thinking (and probably overthinking) about what makes a good leader.
On the show, we talk about the real-life side of leadership: managing people, having difficult conversations, building confidence, setting boundaries, managing up, leading through change, and figuring out what the heck you're doing when you suddenly find yourself in charge.
Some episodes are conversations with people who have interesting stories and lessons to share about leadership, career growth, communication, and personal development. Others are just me, talking through a leadership lesson, a question I've been thinking about, or something I've learned the hard way.
If you're a new or mid-level manager, an emerging leader, or you're somewhere in your career thinking, “Okay...what's next?” you're in the right place.
I'm glad you're here. Grab your coffee and let's get into it.
