Michael and I talk about his organization Operation Merkai that supports our service men & women transitioning from military service to the civilian workforce. Topics we discuss are: The parallels of the job force, the number 1 thing our veterans need to learn before transitioning, using our skill-sets, and much more!
Our special guest is Michael Thomas founder of Operation Meraki [may-rah-kee], a nonprofit focused on helping veterans combat the challenges they face after conflict and separation from military service. This is done through building community partnerships that address challenges of reintegration with unique mental health programs and employability training.
Thomas, a resident of Pickerington, is a disabled veteran who was a 9/11 first responder. After leaving the service, Thomas saw that businesses struggle with how to utilize veterans and noticed that many veterans leave before their first full year of employment. He has since made it his life’s mission to help both the veterans and businesses work better together.
While starting Operation Meraki, Thomas also works at Veterans Affairs so he can help the population of people like him. He has experience running businesses, IT and Fortune 5 companies.
Operation Meraki is currently offering two different workshop programs: ReEngage, which focuses on transitioning Veterans to a new mission and career path, and ReFocus, a photography program that utilizes creative media as an alternative therapy method.
