  • Ep5: Sam Gyimah, Goldman Sachs: “Finance is a lever for change”

In episode 5 Andrew talks to Sam Gyimah, former UK government minister and now non-executive director at Goldman Sachs, about the role of finance in serving and transforming society.

With a background in investment banking and politics – Sam is a former Conservative universities and science minister - he understands how to bring these worlds together to create real change.

Sam is also a leader led by his values. In 2018 he was one of only 21 Tory rebels who voted against a no-deal Brexit. It was a stand that ultimately cost him his political career.

Now back at Goldman Sachs, where he started out in corporate finance, the firm says he brings “a diversity of perspective” on innovation, ESG, and impact investing.

“Business has no choice but to find solutions,” he says.

Dr Andrew White, Senior Fellow of Management Practice, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Sam Gyimah (@SamGyimah), Board Director, Goldman Sachs International; Oxford University Innovation.

  • Ep4: Jane Burston, The Clean Air Fund: “It’s amazing how much you can achieve when you don’t care who takes the credit”

In episode 4 Andrew talks to Jane Burston, the founder and Executive Director of The Clean Air Fund, about leading without ego and building a movement to create clean air for all.

The Clean Air Fund calls air pollution a “hidden emergency”. In fact it’s one of the biggest public health issues we face globally – and it’s getting worse. 90% of people worldwide do not have clean air to breathe. And every minute one child and 12 adults die of illnesses caused by air pollution.

Putting an end to this is too big a task for just one organisation. It needs a global movement. And building that is what The Clean Air Fund is all about.

It’s a philanthropic foundation that brings together funders, researchers, policy makers and campaigners to strengthen their collective investment, voice and impact.

Says Jane: “Clean air initiatives can be a secret weapon against some of the world’s most pressing challenges but governments are largely ignoring them. We can tackle climate change, save lives and fight inequality at the same time if we invest more and work together.”

  • Ep3: David Katz, The Plastic Bank: “It’s win win or no deal”

In episode 3 Andrew talks to David Katz, founder and CEO of The Plastic Bank, about conscious capitalism and turning ocean plastic into money - his for-profit solution to plastic waste and poverty.

The Plastic Bank is a global network of micro recycling markets that empower the poor to transcend poverty by cleaning the environment. By reframing the problem of ocean plastic as an opportunity to create abundance for everyone, The Plastic Bank is clearing our seas of harmful plastic, turning it into money for the people who collect it, and recycling collected material into the global manufacturing supply chain. Partners include IBM, Shell Energy, SC Johnson, Aldi, Henkel and more.

David Katz is its visionary founder: “The duty of a CEO to ensure that shareholders win at the expense of others has to change. We’re here now because of a win-lose philosophy. Win win or no deal is a regenerative idea. How might we get to a place where everything we buy helps society, helps the environment, helps the Earth?”

David talks to Andrew about having an abundance mindset, hiring for vulnerability and why profit does not need to come at the expense of people or planet.

    Featuring:

Dr Andrew White, Senior Fellow of Management Practice, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

David Katz (@DavidKatzPB), founder and CEO of The Plastic Bank.
