  • No-one’s a Natural Born Leader - Clemencia Herrera - Leadership in Action- Episode #030

There has been a massive myth built up around the ‘natural born leader’ and what specific traits define someone as one. Clemencia Herrera is breaking down that myth and giving everyone some great advice on how to think about themselves and their teams. You’ll learn what you need to do to become a better leader, what leadership really means, and the importance of being willing to learn, no matter what your title is.

    Takeaways:

    • Anyone can become a great leader, regardless of personality, it just requires lots of practice. There is no such thing as a natural leader.
  • It’s important to be open to trying new things, without the fear of failing because regardless if you succeed or not, you will learn something from the experience.
  • Being a good leader is about being able to motivate people to accomplish the team’s goal and getting others to buy into that goal.
  • Becoming a great leader requires a lot of self awareness and a great willingness to not only learn about yourself but also to work on yourself.
  • Leadership is not just about creating a process and then never changing it. You as a leader need to adjust to the evolving needs of your team and the business.
  • As a leader, you need to take the time and expend the effort to work on yourself and develop your own mental toughness.

  • Focusing on the Followers - Bill Flynn - Leadership in Action- Episode #029

Everyone is always trying to sell you their simple tricks, tips, or habits that leaders must have to be great, but there is no one perfect process for leadership. Bill Flynn breaks down the myths around leadership while drawing on his immense experience to provide you with what really matters in reaching your vision, that being the followers. Learn how to increase buy-in, where to turn to for solutions, and what to look for when hiring for your team.

    Takeaways:

    • Leadership is not a repeatable concept. There is not a concrete set of principles that someone can follow and be defined as a good leader. You cannot claim leadership, it must be bestowed upon you by your followers.
  • To become a leader, you must create something compelling and have courage. People want to follow something that is compelling, this could be a vision, personality, etc. Leaders need the courage to push the vision despite the strong headwinds.
  • Leaders also need the courage to give up some amount of control over their vision to their followers. In order to grow, your followers need to learn as they go and they will make mistakes, but that is just a necessary part of the process.
  • As a leader, you have to be yourself. Don’t try and copy what someone like Steve Jobs or Elon Musk did, be yourself. Along with that, don’t try to change your employees, try to find what they are best at and let them excel at it.
  • Write down a vivid vision so people can see what it is and decide whether they want to be a part of that or not. If your employees believe in the vision, they will be willing to go to great lengths to help you accomplish your vision.
  • A good follower will believe what the leader believes but will offer different opinions on how to accomplish the vision. These diverse voices are the ones you want on your senior leadership team.
  • Ask your team for a solution to the problem before you tell them what you think your solution would be. The leader doesn’t always have to have the answer and this will encourage more input from your team.

  • Putting Your Team First - Tim Barrett - Leadership in Action- Episode #028

While conventional business wisdom has resorted to the tired adage of “the customer is always right”, this can actually cause serious harm to your business. Instead, Tim Barrett suggests placing the business’s focus on wowing the employees. You’ll learn about how this framework impacts customer relationships, engages your team, and the incredible opportunity business leaders have to impact the lives of others.

    Takeaways:

    • If you put the needs of your customers ahead of the needs of your employees, you are actually doing a disservice to your company.
  • A Wow Pyramid consists of three levels and indicates which section delivers value to the others. The largest, foundational level is the employees, the middle section is the customers, and the topmost level is the company.
  • The company focuses on giving value to the employees, which translates into the employees providing value to the customers. Then, the customers, having received all that value, give value to the company, which the company gives back to the employees.
  • There are a few keys to wowing your employees that include removing roadblocks for them, investing in technology to help them, and using open books to allow them to see how their work directly results in quarterly gain share sums which they earn.
  • As business leaders, you have the opportunity and ability to make a massive difference in a lot of people’s lives. One of the best things you can do is to provide opportunities for everyone on your team to succeed.
  • Get to know as many people on your team as you can. This will help you gain perspective from new voices as well as understand those employees and develop empathy for everyone in your business and their unique situations.

  • Customer Service vs Customer Compliance - Ted Palashis - Leadership in Action- Episode #027

Does your company do business the way your client would like to do business, or do you force the client to comply with the way your company does business? Ted Palashis breaks down the nuances of how you interact and think of your client and what message you send to the client and prospects alike. Prepare to learn about the importance of great training, what to look for when hiring, and which clients to seek out once you can be selective.

    Takeaways:

    • Most employees want to provide good service to the customer but when they fail in doing so, it can often be attributed to training. When your employees are empathetic to your customers and their needs, they can’t help but provide them great service.
  • All of the little things your employees do send a message to your client. This could be as simple as the way you train your employees to answer the phones.
  • When a client calls, don’t tell them that someone’s in a meeting, say you’ll try and catch them, and if you can’t, say they were unavailable and ask what you can do for the client. This is how you become an advocate for the client which makes them feel valued.
  • Always follow up with the client once the deliverable is made. This shows them how well you did, that you care about how well you did, and gets you closer to the situation and the problems of the client which offers valuable information.
  • The real test of customer service is how the customer feels after the interaction. If the customer feels good, the service was good. If the customer feels bad, the service was bad.
  • Customer compliance is when a customer has to comply with the way the company does business. Whereas, customer service is when the company is run based on how the customer wants to do business with the company.
  • When you can afford to be selective with clients, you want to find more who will be loyal and recommend you rather than the “crazies” that don’t fit. The best way to discern which kind of client a prospect might be is by discussing what they really need.

  • The CEO’s Support Teams - Mark Mascia - Leadership in Action- Episode #026

CEOs put additional pressure on themselves by attempting to be invincible, omnipotent leaders for their employees to look to for the perfect answer to every question. However, this simply isn’t realistic nor is it sustainable. Mark Mascia knows a few things about leadership and running a company which you’ll hear all about this episode. Get ready to learn about constructing support teams around yourself, when to listen to the experts and when not to, and what to do when you’re not the smartest person in the room.

    Takeaways:

    • The mythic “lone-leader” CEO who knows all and does everything does not actually exist. They are putting up an unsustainable facade of invulnerability and omnipotence.
  • For CEOs, finding peer group support from other CEOs in organizations like EO or an industry-specific group allows them to have a space where they can be comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities.
  • Instead of giving everyone around you the answers, allow them to find their own conclusions even if they may differ from your own. As long as they are making progress towards the goal allow them to fail if they fail, this helps with actual learning.
  • CEOs can develop themselves and their business by creating a framework of four teams: 1. Work Support Team; 2. Self Improvement Support team; 3. Support of Community; 4. Personal Relationship level.
  • You should try to hire the smartest people available, even if they are smarter than you. With employees specialized in one aspect, you can ask them how they would solve the problem and that can help inform your decision, regardless of if you go with that.
  • Often, the experts that you hire for one area of the project won’t see or aren’t expected to see how one decision impacts other areas which is where the project manager or CEO comes in.
  • The self Improvement team can include a therapist, a physical trainer, an executive coach. This is important in taking care of the other parts of your life outside of work which, if neglected, can negatively impact your work.

  • Developing Through Delegation - Tony Fields - Leadership in Action - Episode #025

Delegation is a misunderstood concept which is thrown around in business circle without any thought as to how to implement it or why it’s important. Tony Fields is here to set the record straight on delegation. You’ll learn different levels of delegation and the escalating expectations that come from them and how they can help with clear communication. Discover how to develop, understand, and increase buy in within your team.

    Takeaways:

    • Delegation is not just on or off. There are different levels of delegation which convey different messages as to the proper feedback that is expected. Each level has a higher amount of authority and requires a higher amount of trust.
  • There are six levels to delegation: 1. Do as I say; 2. Look into this for me; 3. Give me your advice, but I’ll decide; 4. Explore, decide, but check before submitting; 5. Explore, decide, commit if within limits; 6. Just get it done.
  • You can help your team develop if you start defaulting to level 3 delegation which asks for their opinion and feedback in the decision process. By getting them involved in the process, they are more willing to buy in and stay committed.
  • DISC is a framework to understand a person’s personality and motivations. Using DISC can help improve the effectiveness of your communication by using the right approach for each person based on their DISC assessment.
  • A great way to use DISC is to have everyone on your team take the assessment and then share the results with everyone so they are all able to understand how best to communicate with each other.
  • Although you may be very strong in one area, if you try to talk with everyone at that high level, you won’t be able to effectively communicate. Be aware of your strengths and when discussing them, try to talk to the average person’s understanding of them.
  • The Hybrid work environment is not just a trend, it is here to stay and businesses need to accept that. Even now applicants are turning down positions without the option of working remotely.

  • No, Money Down - Mark Stiles - Leadership in Action- Episode #024

Get ready to take a peek behind the scenes into the legal world through the eyes of an attorney and entrepreneur who has seen the mistakes most entrepreneurs are bound to make. Mark Stiles is bringing you the advice you need when to find an attorney, how to look for one, and how many attorneys are too many attorneys for you. You will also hear about the different ways to get into the real estate business, what your expectations should be when you buy a property, and the best ways to maximize your portfolio’s value.

    Takeaways:

    • Not all attorneys are jerks. Choose an attorney who matches your personality type because you could be working with them for a long time. Get a referral from someone who was or is, in a similar position to you. Interview and connect with them.
  • All attorneys are specialized in their own niches, so make sure to find one that can help you with what your business actually needs. Oftentimes, the attorney who helps you start your company is not the attorney who will help you sell the company.
  • Don’t wait to look for an attorney until you need to have an attorney! Be proactive, not reactive! People who wait until trouble strikes to look for representation are often why attorneys get such a bad reputation. Have a process before disaster strikes.
  • It’s better to try and find ways to work together with people because when litigation drags on, the only people who win are the attorneys for both sides who are billing hourly. It’s better to come to a quick resolution where each side is only a little unhappy.
  • You should surround yourself or your business with a team of professionals that include a financial advisor, a CPA, a title attorney, a real estate agent, a mortgage professional insurance agent. Your attorney should be able to refer the best specialists when needed.
  • There are different ways to get into real estate such as office, warehouse, residential, etc. and the next best time to buy real estate is now. Work with a real estate attorney, a real estate agent who knows investment properties, and a mortgage professional.
  • Expect a second job if you are getting into real estate! There’s a lot of work you’ll have to do! You can hire a manager who can take care of a lot of that work but keep in mind that will cut into your profit margins.
  •

    Quote of the Show

  • Dominating by Delegating - Matt Chiaradonna - Leadership in Action- Episode #023

Why do 80% of new businesses fail in the first five years? In large part, this is due to the business owners and entrepreneurs trying to do and control everything themselves. Matt Chiaradonna is going to teach you about how trying to do everything yourself places limits on you and your business, why it’s critical to have a plan to manage potential growth, and how to actually and responsibly let go of the reins in order to find greater success.

    Takeaways:

    • Business leaders do not need to be closely involved with every single task or situation that may arise in their business. That over-involved/micro-managing leader will burn themselves out and limit the growth of their company.
  • A single person only has so much capacity to learn and if they are attempting to do everything in the business, this places real limitations on their ability to grow and scale.
  • Contrary to popular belief, you can find people that you can teach, trust, and delegate to. Write out criteria for the ideal candidates and which strengths they should have to complement your strengths to make the whole company more capable.
  • There are four steps to avoid becoming this kind of leader: 1. Know yourself and why you got into the business; 2. Build a team based on defined criteria; 3. Follow your flow; 4. Let go of the reins and delegate.
  • As you are creating your plan for the business and how it will grow, remember why you got into it in the first part and think about what you want to get out of the business and set that as a goal.
  • When building your team you have to make sure that your team members want what you want. If that is the case, they don’t have to be very similar to you in other ways, it doesn’t matter what they look like, sound like, or like to do.
  • In order to delegate to members of your team and find success, you have to take the time and resources to develop your team. You need to train people so they can train others so you can grow at scale.
  •

    Quote of the Show

    • “If your plan is to grow, you have to start earlier giving up those controls, giving up those reins, and finding people that you can lean on and delegate to in order to get that out of your hands, so you can grow to a larger size.” - Matt Chiaradonna

  • From Client to Advocate - Varun Bihani - Leadership in Action - Episode #022

Far too often, companies place the quality of service over the customer experience and lose out on future work with those clients and the referrals they could provide. Varun Bihani is working to flip that around and use a focus on customer experience to grow companies. You’ll learn how to set the right expectations with your clients, the importance of upfront and transparent communication, and why the trust that you establish far outweighs the quality of your services.

    Takeaways:

    • In most cases, especially in service industries, your customer experience is more important than the quality of the service that you provide.
  • The Customer Experience begins from day one with how your company communicates with the customer and how the expectations have been set with the customer.
  • By having a great customer experience, you keep your customers happy and they become more likely to refer you to other potential customers.
  • Even though the quality of the work you provide a client is great, that client may not want to come back to you or refer you if your process leaves them with a bad taste. Think of a restaurant with terrible service or ambiance, you won’t actually care how the food tastes.
  • Managing all of the little things that impact your customer experience is part of setting the right expectations. It’s important to clearly communicate the process from the start and also any delays or mistakes that may alter the roadmap as they occur.
  • By being upfront and communicating any mistakes to your client, you build trust and that trust is what will bring that client back to you, regardless of the level of quality. Your competitors likely have the same level of quality, but you have the relationship.
  • You can’t tell a customer how reliable your company is through marketing, they have to experience it themselves or hear about it from another customer who has experienced it. Your customers are more effective than you when talking about your company.

  • Unplugging to Recharge - Kristin Chambers - Leadership in Action- Episode #021

So many people believe the key to their company’s success is to wake up at 5, strap into the grind, and burn all the midnight oil they can find. But this is a flawed perspective and by actually getting space from your business you can be more effective when you are working on it. Entrepreneur, CEO, and Travel Designer, Kristin Chambers is letting everyone know the keys to work on themselves before they work on their businesses. Learn about how to unplug, the importance of committing to fully unplug, and what the copious benefits of unplugging are. One of Kristin’s favorite ways to unplug is to travel and you’ll hear many more great ways too.

    Takeaways:

    • It’s no longer cool to be the CEO that’s working 24/7 and is completely burnt out. You can actually be more efficient if you are more meaningful and intentional with your time and connecting with others outside of the business world.
  • Before you put even more work into your company, you have to work on yourself! Get yourself into healthier habits, rekindle and or feed relationships with loved ones, and find your “why?”
  • Set aside time to unplug from your company. Don’t try to just partially unplug, it’s important to completely unplug which means not checking your email… at all. Commit to fully unplugging.
  • Spending time away from your company actually makes you want to get back to it and start working on it again with renewed vigor.
  • A good way to communicate with others that you are “unplugged” is by scheduling “Out of Office” time into your calendar. This tells others that if they need something they better come to you while you’re still plugged in
  • Travel is a great way to recharge. Most of the world is slower-paced than the US and by embracing this cultural difference while traveling it opens you to a new perspective and helps you to relax and recharge.
  • When booking a trip, try using a travel agency to remove the stress, find better rates for lodging and airfare, and discover new experiences custom-crafted for you.
