Leadership is a synthesis of opposites. It asks you to hold a vision with clarity and determination while simultaneously releasing your grip on how that vision gets realized. That tension is not a contradiction to resolve. It is the operating condition of anyone leading well. The needle on the record player has to maintain precise, deliberate pressure, and out of that tension comes something neither the needle nor the record could produce alone.
Brian draws a direct line back to the preparing room, where a candidate is divested of all metals and valuables, stripped of the tools of clinging and coercion, and made to enter without the means of buying or forcing an outcome. That experience is not symbolic decoration. It is a compressed lesson in what leadership actually requires: you cannot buy strong leadership, and there is no beating someone into a better result. What you have is the vision, your ability to communicate it, and your willingness to give it away.
The lodge creates the opportunity to practice this on purpose. Roles turn over. Authority is passed. The person who held the chair last year is in the West this year and the South the year before. That structure is a feature, not an inconvenience. It is a rehearsal for the broader truth that everything you lead, your team, your lodge, your family, you hold for a punishingly brief period of time. The joy available in that window is the joy of leaving it better, by giving people the right piece of work and watching what they do with it.
There are people right now who are ready to surprise you, if you can give them the right piece and then get out of the way.
