“You can even have circles where there’s no talking whatsoever, but just the simple and full act of listening and being present for one another.”
In this episode, Jerome and Julienne talk to Cecilia Loving and Gina Leow, two leaders in diversity and inclusion at PBS. Cecilia, Senior Vice President, and Gina, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, bring years of experience in fostering belonging and building trust. Together, they co-authored the book Connecting Through Circles, which focuses on using circle practices to promote healing, restorative justice, emotional intelligence, and community cohesion.
Cecilia shares how storytelling has shaped her work as a theologian and lawyer, and how the concept of circles has become central to her approach in creating healing spaces. They explain the structure of circle processes, including the use of a talking piece and the importance of listening and presence, and how circles create a space where participants can share openly or remain in silence, fostering inclusivity and understanding.
Tune in to explore how silence, storytelling, and the simple act of passing a talking stick can transform group dynamics and help build stronger, more empathetic communities—both in-person and virtually!
