INVEST IN YOUR KIDS GROWTH BEYOND SCHOOL Not everything your children need to know will be taught in school. If you have “invested” in the digital babysitters like smart phones, laptops, game consoles and the like you are probably reaping the fruit of their addictions. Those fruits look like the defiance of authority figures, loud, rude and vulgar language, failure to contribute to the household and a vehement demand to be left to their own choices. These “digital babysitters” are vapid at best and destructive if left unchallenged. AND YET ... as a leadership coach I have offered to mentor, to guide and to engage with sons of single mothers on numerous occasions only to be met with the reply - “I can’t believe you charge for that!” I ask you to consider the “cost/ investment” in the smart phone , game consoles, summer camps and movie tickets and ask how long before those investments payoff in return. Have you seen the social media videos of the parents vs teens fights over gaming addictions? Or the young boy (12-14 yrs old in a yellow shirt) with the vile and violent language stand up to half a dozen adults to the point of physical conflict? These issues need to be addressed and resolved. Final note for today: LEADERSHIP IS NOT ALL GLITZ AND GLAMOUR. Being a leader is about first leading your own attitude and emotional choices and responses.
