Today I have with me the incredible Michelle Cox who has owned, founded and headed up many companies in her 25 plus years in the corporate world. 

From winning awards in sports and business, dealing with great tragedy, becoming an author, ceramicist and host of the One Question podcast, Michelle’s unconventional life is inspiring to say the least. 

Enduring great loss at a young age and personally overcoming cervical cancer, Michelle is passionate about living in alignment with what she wants to do and helping others to live a life that's right for them.

In October 2021, my life changed forever when I was diagnosed with aggressive stage 3 melanoma. 

It’s been an incredibly challenging time and, refusing to let cancer define me, I’ve kept it close to my chest. Now, it’s time to share my story and I’ve asked my friend, Jacinta Tynan, to help facilitate this very personal and vulnerable conversation. 

Jacinta is a highly regarded news presenter and journalist, author of her newly published book, The Single Mothers Club and writes a regular column for Body & Soul magazine about spirituality. I’m honoured that she has joined me today to help tell my story and reveal deeper parts of myself in this conversation.

“So, this is Christmas and what have you done? Another year over, a new one just begun.” For the final ‘Making It Count’ podcast of 2021 I am sharing some of the biggest takeouts of this year’s episodes. We have had the privilege of amazing guests being part of Making It Count, so I am sharing with you some of their top tips so we can bring our best into 2022.

One of the biggest take-aways from the episodes this year is to ‘Slow down to go fast’. There is a difference between working to live and living to work. Sleep and sustainable healthy routines and are all incredibly important to our perspective and alignment to our values. There is power in reflection – giving yourself the time and space to reflect on your actions to be able to adjust quickly, rather than falling into bad habits. It’s about creating quiet space for your mind, which allows you to find meaning and, create boundaries around the tasks you do each day. 

Rest and self-care are essential. You cannot lead others if you are not confident in your self-care routine.  

Are you making the time to attend appointments to look after you? Your health is your wealth! Are you making time to disconnect from technology? Are you making time for the priorities in your life? We need to develop good habits that will transcend the January resolutions.

And finally, we need to be intentional. Intentional with our actions and words. It’s about operating and living in alignment with your vision, to be the best possible version of yourself for 2022. Kindness is key. Throughout the pandemic, kindness has been shifted to the forefront of our minds. A smile or a text can make such a big difference. It’s the mindset of growth, abundance and gratitude.

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Founder, Director, Mentor, Speaker, and Author of ‘Intuitive’, Craigh Wilson. He joins us to share how we can access and tap into our intuition to become better leaders. 

Craigh was always been intuitive, even from a very young age and shares his gift for telepathy. A few years into his successful career he was burn-out. He made a switch to medical intuition and started to share his gift of energy work with others. Now, he now works with high-performance people, predominantly women, to teach them how to listen to their heart and gut so they can make powerful decisions. 

So, what does intuition really mean? ‘Intuition is a knowing without logical reason’ says Craigh. ‘70% of the most successful human beings use intuition – they are either aware of it, or not aware of it.’ The reason we ignore intuition is usually because of fear, sadness and lack of self-worth. ‘I work with a lot of people who have high-performance anxiety’ says Craigh, ‘but, knowing makes no difference – it’s the action you take.’

‘It’s about combining your intuition, with your intellect, to access your inner-genius’ say Craigh. To be able to make clear, fast and accurate decisions on demand, is to know how to get out of fear.’ Courage is required to follow through on your decisions. We also need the support of a like-minded network. ‘We need to learn to listen to respond, rather than reacting to fear.’

‘You need to slow down to go fast’ says Craigh, ‘because that is where all the special insights come from.’ So, as leaders, we need to slow down, become grounded and centred. This is the key. ‘Intuition becomes more tangible as you use it and trust it more.’ says Craigh.

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Dr Kristy Goodwin who has become the thought leader in the neuro-productivity space. Today we will discuss the main problems Dr Kristy is seeing as we work to counteract the culture of mental wellbeing. ‘Most people innately know that their digital habits and behaviours have perhaps slipped into the dangerous, unproductive and stressful territory’ says Dr Kristy. 

There are three main reasons for our reliance on our digital devices. Firstly, during the pandemic, our digital load was increased to 13+ hours per day on digital devices. Secondly, we have an ‘always on culture’ which is causing a digital presenteeism. And finally, ‘we are working in ways which are not aligned to our neurobiology, meaning we have adopted work practices that aren’t designed to the way our brain and body operate’ Dr Kristy says. ‘These issues are causing a culture of working in marathons, rather than sprints.’ A lot of employees have struggled with their sleep during the pandemic. Research shows blue light delays the onset of sleep, and if used within 60 mins before we sleep, it can decrease our REM cycle. Dr Kristy calls it, ‘wired and tired. We may be getting the same hours of sleep but our REM sleep has been impacted and there are cascading impacts.’ 

‘Rest and recovery are a responsibility’ says Dr Kristy, so how do we as leaders and employers counteract this current digital burn-out? ‘If we really want to optimise people’s mental health and wellbeing, we have to swim further up-stream and look at why people are so digitally exhausted and depleted.’ As leaders, we need to ask if we have manageable workloads and structures. Output and productivity can be mapped. ‘Though by accident, many of us have adopted some unsustainable, and unhealthy digital habits, norms and behaviours’ says Dr Kristy. The organisations which will thrive in this digital age, will tackle these topics, without going back to old ways of working. 

Dr Kristy says, ‘When we start to align our work schedule with our biology, our productivity increases and our wellbeing is looked after.’ Employers need to also consider the reciprocal benefits of flexible work arrangements for their employees. ‘These open conversations are so important and, establish a digital guardrail.’

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with international confidence coach, Erika Cramer. She is a 5-star Podcast host of ‘The Confidence Chronicles.’ She has created a seven-figure global business by mentoring and helping those who have suffered similar life experiences as her own.

Erika is constantly levelling up and role modelling the way forward for women across the globe. She shares her story and the moment she decided to make a change. ‘It’s not what happens to you, it’s what you decide to do next’ says Erika. Growing up in Boston, Erika says ‘It was a traumatic childhood’. The wake-up call came after a car accident, ‘It broke me.’ So, she moved to Australia and started on a journey of self-work and investigating why she lacked confidence. ‘I am the common denominator of my hot mess of a life, but I am also the solution.’ 

‘People don’t move until they are squeezed and pushed to the edge’ says Erika, ‘please don’t wait till you are at the edge before you make changes.’ The number one need in humans is connection and, over the past 2 years this has been taken away. ‘We have to remember that we have all been traumatised’ says Erika. ‘We should become the cause of our life rather than the effect.’ It’s about taking responsibility and building resilience. 

Confidence needs to be practiced. ‘No one is born confident. It is a practice that needs to be worked on every day.’ One of the biggest fears in dealing with hardship is having to deal with the shit, ‘We get scared that we won’t be able to cope but, you have already done it. You’ve already gone through it.’ It’s ok to cry – sometimes it’s the only way to get rid of the heavy density. ‘It’s about not shaming yourself’ says Erika. 

Erika shares with us how ‘The Sisterhood’, a coaching program for women, is different from other programs. ‘I thought - when do we, as women, sit down and share our shit? There was no safe space to do that so I wanted to create a sisterhood where this was encouraged. It’s a safe space for you to be a hot mess and not feel alone’ says Erika. She shares her ‘Next Level November’ program and encourages us to work on ourselves – no matter who we do this with. ‘Don’t tell yourself you don’t need to work on yourself – you do. We all do.’

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Ashley Fell, Social Researcher, Author, TEDx Speaker, Director of Advisory at the internationally recognised McCrindle and Host of the ‘Future Report’ podcast.

Workplace wellbeing has become a bit of a buzz word. ‘Work wellbeing is when our work can contribute to, and enhances our sense of meaning, purpose and contribution in life’ says Ashley. It’s more than just fruit bowl, workouts and pets in the workplace. ‘It’s much bigger than that.’ We spend a third of our life at work so it is really important to get meaning from your workplace.

We’re all looking for work which aligns to our personal purpose and values. ‘Research suggests that mental health and stress of work are the number one consideration for the future of work in Australia. Post-pandemic, these feelings have become stronger. ‘There are 5 key items the next generation are looking for in a workplace - -first up is culture, then work-life integration, leadership style, job content and finally training.’  Ashley says, ‘57% of workers say they would sacrifice a pay-rise for better well-being at work.’ If it is on the hearts and minds of employees, it needs to be at the forefront of leadership as well. 
 
Ashley shares the greatest barriers to wellbeing at work. ‘Interestingly, across our survey it was leadership and culture. So, we need to first sort out the leadership as culture flows from the top down.’ We need to set the behaviour, attitude and the expectation of purpose and value, so people can thrive in their workplace. There are three main areas to build culture and wellbeing – Culture, purpose and impact (CPI).’ She goes on to share how, as leaders, we can improve in all these three key areas. Business is about people, and if those people are well led, they deliver superior outcomes. Ashley says, ‘Culture is built in an organisation whether intentional or not – so why not be intentional?’  

Ashley is the author of two books on leadership and generational change: ‘Work Wellbeing’ and ‘Generation Alpha.’

In Australia, 40% of employees are considering leaving their position next year which is forcing organisations to consider how they can retain and attract employees. ‘I have clients knocking on my door all week wondering how to attract the right talent to their business’ says Lucy. Employees and your leadership team are your biggest brand advocates – employees have 10 times the following of a brand and, 92% of people accept personal recommendations. ‘Your people are a representation of your brand and so are their LinkedIn profiles. So, we need to empower your people and train them to represent the brand and, showcase the organisation's culture in the right way.’ 

Lucy says, ‘The goal is to get the tone of voice, and the storytelling from the leader’s perspective but also remembering to bring in the purpose of the organisation’ says Lucy, ‘but when we do it and do it well, it just sings.’ As a result, you will attract talent, extend brand reach, create lead generation and encourage internal leadership demonstration. Ensure the tone of voice, topics and communication are consistent in their message. ‘We do an equal amount of work in both the corporate and small business setting’ says Lucy. This approach is applicable to any organisation of any size. 

Lucy is passionate about aligning employees to their brand and giving them the tools and training to help attract top talent and support the brand on LinkedIn. So, what are Lucy’s top tips for creating employee advocates? ‘Your people are your biggest fans’ says Lucy ‘give them the tools and the techniques to be able to tell those stories in an authentic and human way.’ Education, a clear strategy and underpinning that with a great content marketing strategy. ‘The moment you get your leadership behind this strategy, it will explode.’

This week on the ‘Making It Count’ podcast I thought I would re-introduce myself as well as share some insights for leaders as our attention turns to the new year. I am Julie Hyde and I believe that heart-led leaders make the world a better place for all. When we role model positive and empowering leadership we show others what is possible. When we step up and stand in our spotlight, and have the confidence to lead authentically, that is where the magic happens. And, this is where we grow. This is the driving force behind what I do, and the reason I began this Podcast. I wanted to share the insights of those who are the leadership life-blood of our community.

I have learnt first hand what it takes to be an effective leader over my 21-year award-winning career. I work with leaders who want to be strong and effective role models who enable their team to shine. Leadership is now about people. This is a shift we have seen in the last 2 years. We have all been effectively forced to a period of reflection and re-set, people have emerged very differently. We have seen the shift to working from home and that it can be done well.  All of these changes mean we cannot return to the ‘normal pre-pandemic’ workforce. How, when, and where people want to work has changed. Leaders who have accepted this change see 55% of their work-force as high performers.

Currently is a huge mis-alignment between what leaders are wanting and what their workforce is wanting in how they work. By becoming a relevant, open leader who is flexible and agile, we are more likely to  retain staff in this era of ‘the great resignation’. The employment market in Australia right now is so tight. People have a new perspective and want their personal lives to reflect this change. As leaders, we have to think differently and reimagine what the workforce and workplace looks like within our organisations.

So, the question becomes how can we move with these changes? Recognise that your people are the power in your business. If you are not aligned with your people, you are playing a losing game. Working with your people to find alignment is the best way to fail-safe your business for 2022.
