  • 100th Episode Celebration with Julie Hyde and Melissa Williams

I have an extra special episode today to mark the 100th episode of Making It Count! So much has happened since my podcasting journey began and I’ve learned so much from my incredible guests and also about myself.

Since launching in 2018, three very significant things happened; I turned 50, Covid came along and changed the world forever and I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. Through it all, I continued to release episodes, connecting with so many incredible people along the way and nearly tripling in downloads.

To celebrate this incredible milestone, I’ve asked the lovely Melissa Williams to jump in the host seat and interview me to help unpack the last 100 episodes. It’s been interesting to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned, how my brand has evolved throughout this journey and how I have personally grown more brave and bold through all my experiences.

Although it was a really challenging list to narrow down, I share my top 5 episodes of all time, what I loved about them, and some of the insights that these 5 remarkable guests brought to each episode.

I’m so grateful to everyone who has joined me on this journey and for the opportunity to inspire others to make it count in their own way.

Being an occasion that is absolutely worth celebrating, I also have a special offer for you! DM at @juliehydeleads to tell me your favourite episode, what you loved most about it and you’ll go in the draw to receive a FREE 45 minute coaching session with me.

  • Breaking up with People Pleasing

Do you find yourself conforming to other people’s beliefs and opinions? Scared to disagree? Compromising on your standards and allowing people to cross your boundaries?

You might just be a people pleaser! I know the signs, I was one for my entire life until my late thirties. From childhood, right through to my corporate career I was unaware that I was, effectively, being a different person for different people. I was compromising my standards and priorities, and always putting others first. My anxiety levels were so high if I knew I had to disappoint or say no to someone.

It was exhausting. People pleasing is the road that will lead to burn out.

But this might just be the fork in the road where you get to choose a new direction.

In this episode I share three tips that will help you transform from being a people pleaser into being a strong self leader. This is not only a game changer for your personal wellbeing and happiness, but absolutely transformative for your personal brand.

My aim is to put you on the path of being a  better leader, help you be more kind and gracious and to bring the energy back into your life.

It’s so important that we break the people pleasing cycle if we want to live a life of intention and purpose and to create a legacy we’re proud of. With a simple shift in mindset you will be able to turn your people pleasing tendencies around to be a leader of self.

  • Taking Responsibility to Effect Change with Mandy Burns

This week we have the remarkable Mandy Burns on the podcast. Mandy started as a CEO of Variety Victoria mid December 2019 and previously worked with the new social network platform B Collective to take it from a tech start-up to a global movement. She has practised as a psychologist, relationship counsellor and educator in both Melbourne and Perth and I’m so grateful to have her unstoppable energy on the show today.

Mandy has held numerous national and local NFP board roles, led networking and support of women events, and has been recognised by Victoria’s Children’s Community and Telstra Business Women's Awards.

In our conversation, we’re exploring Mandy’s passion for doing everything she can to impact the lives of children and the environment.

Mandy is making it count by taking responsibility. This manifests for her in different ways, including volunteering, picking up rubbish on beaches, living her social justice ideals and working with children.

If we accept something we know is wrong, we become part of the problem.

Mandy explores her CEO role in Variety Children’s Charity, her background sitting on boards for charities, the inspiration that came from learning about youth homelessness, the vulnerability of being a leader, the challenges of leadership (while wearing undies on the outside and a cape!), and the key attributes that a modern leader absolutely needs in 2022.

It fills Mandy’s heart with joy to make a difference in the lives of children. She shares how her friends, family, values, working with amazing people and benefiting from their collective wisdom keep her anchored every day.

Mandy is such an inspirational leader who advises us to make it count by taking responsibility in our lives and never doubt that a small group of people can truly change the world.

  • Claiming Your Power Back with Sally Coates

My guest today is my wonderful friend, the unstoppable Sally Coates. Sally has always had a passion for retail and has led large merchandise teams for top-performing ASX listed companies including Woolworths, Wesfarmers and David Jones.

Sally has also held CEO roles in various SMEs and through her leadership, she has turned them around and increased growth by focusing on developing, implementing, and embedding the transformation strategies needed to ensure they have the foundations and plans in place to be focused on a long and sustainable future.

In 2020, Sally founded ‘The Retail Mentors’, a network that brings together the leading minds of the retail industry and is dedicated to creating, shaping, and influencing the future leaders of retail, and the retail businesses of the future.

Sally is making it count by founding the Retail Mentors to help people working in retail and make mentoring more available to people outside of their network.

In our conversation, we’re talking about claiming your power back. Sally explores how The Retail Mentors help so many people in the retail industry find mentors, connect and build a supportive network. The mentor supporting them is present in a genuine capacity so the mentee feels safe to be vulnerable and honest to make true headway in their career.

Sally openly shares about a challenging and difficult situation in a previous workplace with a boss. She was working 80+ hour weeks and was feeling absolutely exhausted. The emotional abuse she experienced working in the role, from her boss, felt very similar to a previous relationship which flew up red flags. She decided she had to do what was right for her, claimed her power back and walked away from such a toxic situation.

She learned to remember and know her self-worth, no matter what other people say and do. Remember to put forward the achievements of yourself and your team. Sally tells us that quietly doing an amazing job isn’t always the best way to get noticed and advocate for yourself and your team.

Sally has conquered two enormous mountains, Kilimanjaro and the base camp of Mount Everest! She shares her journey to making the decision to pursue these amazing challenges and how she prepared for these epic climbs. These goals gave her something to strive for that weren’t based on her professional career and she thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. She discusses her self-development and what she learned about herself during the hikes.

You’ll find so much value in this conversation, Sally is definitely making it count every day through her generosity and passion for shaping our future leaders. Sally tells us to remember that we’re all so different and what you expect of yourself isn’t necessarily what you should expect of others.

  • Why Being Well Nourished is the Secret to Your Success with Georgia Harding

This week I have guest Georgia Harding joining me for an in-depth discussion on nutrition and wholistic health. Georgia is a naturopath with 20+years of experience, author, mother, and passionate health educator. She shares free health advice and intolerance allergy-friendly recipes on her website to inspire people to live happy, healthy lives while enjoying amazing food.

Georgia is passionate about supporting the health of this generation and the next by helping parents to feed their children well with simplified nutrition and well-balanced meals.

Georgia is making it count every day by encouraging people to eat healthy, whole food consistently.

In this episode, Georgia is here to share with you why being well nourished is the secret to your success. We discuss Georgia’s journey to starting Well Nourished 9 years ago and finding her creative outlet. She hates food waste and loves coming up with new and different flavour combinations with basic ingredients that are incredibly delicious and nutritious for the whole family.

Food has the potential to switch on or switch off good or bad genes. Food speaks to our genetic make up and it plays such an important role in our physical and mental health. Georgia explores the amazing nutritional benefits of all of those herbs and spices that are sitting in your pantry right now.

Georgia talks about the problems and concerns of fad diets. Every person is different and unique but everybody thrives on a whole foods diet. Georgia always prefers to be fed by nature than industry and it’s not just the goodness that you’re eating, it’s what you’re not eating that counts.

When you’re eating starchy, carbohydrate-laden, high-sugar foods your mood reflects it. There are so many ways that food affects our mental wellbeing. Georgia explores these links and talks about how important variety is in our diet to ensure we’re absorbing all of the nutrients in our food.

Winging it when it comes to food planning and preparation isn’t going to cut it. Georgia tells us how important it is to have a routine for shopping, meal planning and cooking. You’ll save yourself stress, time and money every week when you’re prepared for some (if not all) of your meals.

I absolutely loved having Georgia on the show to share her expertise with you. She is releasing her new 10-part, self-paced program called ‘Raising Well Nourished Kids’ dedicated to raising children with whole foods. Head over to her website and check out all of her amazing recipes, resources and invaluable membership program.

  • From Pharmacist to Successful Entrepreneur with Anna Barwick

My guest today is the pharmacy practice lecturer in the School of Rural Medicine at the University of New England, Anna Barwick. Anna is the founder of PharmOnline, the first pharmacist-led telehealth service in Australia. She has also won the 2022 NSW Premier’s Woman of the Year, 2022 NSW Minerals Council Regional Woman of the Year, 2021 NSW Pharmacist of the Year and many more.

Anna is making it count through her passion for improving the health of all Australians and, in particular, leaving a legacy of helping rural and remote Australia.

In this episode, Anna talks about her journey to starting her business, the challenges that rural and regional Australia face in the health industry, her many awards, the importance of a positive mindset, and what’s next on her master plan.

Anna shares how her grandmother passed away in her sleep from undiagnosed heart failure. Going through this experience, Anna wanted to dedicate herself to preventing this from happening to another family. She decided to pursue pharmacy as it is focused on prevention, improves quality of life and helps people to understand medication and non-medication ways of dealing with health conditions.

The limitations in rural areas and accessibility issues of highly skilled health professionals led Anna to build her business PharmOnline. As a practitioner, Anna had to learn about the business side of running a business and find the time to fit everything into her very busy workdays. The business is absolutely flourishing and I can’t believe it wasn’t around sooner!

The things that internally motivate Anna are where she keeps her focus and finds her motivation to keep going, these include improving healthcare access, supporting women, and the challenges in rural and remote areas.

Anna has been highly awarded over many years and she takes us through what they mean for her and the pathways they have opened up. She encourages women to pursue their passions, take advantage of all opportunities that come along and understand that if she can do it, anyone can do it.

You’ll find so much value in Anna’s journey and passion to improve the health of so many Australians. After listening, head over to PharmOnline to find out more about how they can help guide you through any health concerns today.

  • Building Connections for Growth with Mel Williams

Today I’m chatting with the spectacular Mel Williams. Mel finds practical and creative ways for businesses and individuals to diversify, grow and maximise their potential. She is guided by a growth mindset in facilitating marketing and partnership collaborations across leading tier-1 brands, NGOs and not for profits.

In this episode, Mel is taking us through building connections for growth. She shares how her 20 years of experience building and leading sales and marketing growth initiatives has helped her develop a strong skill in identifying opportunities for growth.

With a unique ability to see through the clutter and discover hidden opportunities, Mel finds what makes the most sense (not necessarily what’s the most popular) and works it through from a financial perspective to ensure that it will deliver.

There is so much power and potential from building a good collaboration. Mel takes us through her top 3 tips for growing strategic partnerships and connections.

Remember, don’t overcomplicate partnerships. If Nanna can’t understand it, nobody will understand it.

Mel discusses taking on a role with the grants committee for the children’s charity, Variety. They support approximately 80,000 children around Australia each year who are experiencing disadvantage, disability or illness. It is one of the best things Mel has ever done and is very close to her heart.

I’m so grateful to have Mel on the show today to share her expertise, experience and inspiration. You’ll take away so much value from her journey and her knowledge on building positive connections for growth and collaboration in life and business.

  • The Power of Mindset Shifts During a Challenge

In today’s episode, I’m discussing the power of mindset shifts during a challenge. You can use these shifts in any challenge you’re facing to rewrite your story and change how you look at your life.

I want to share some surprisingly good things I’ve learned about having cancer.

Before this diagnosis, I wasn’t present 100% of the time. I now want to live in complete alignment with what is most important to me without apology and without guilt. I have developed an amazing clarity around doing everything that will make the biggest difference to my outcome.

You have to take action to have the life and career that you are dreaming of. Don’t stay stuck in a job you hate or continuously plodding through on the treadmill of life. Your legacy comes from every action you take (or don’t take).

Take small steps forward, each and every day to make them count.

I’ll run you through all of the mindset shifts that I’ve been through since my diagnosis. I encourage you to reflect and try these out in your life to give yourself permission and find the amazing power of letting go of the things that no longer serve you.

  • Embracing Your Story as a Single Mother with Jacinta Tynan

I’m chatting with the multitalented Jacinta Tynan today. Jacinta is a highly regarded former Australian news presenter, journalist, author, MC, speaker and life coach. Jacinta has recently published her 5th book, ‘The Single Mother Social Club: Inspiration and advice on embracing single parenthood’ which we’ll be exploring today.

In this episode, Jacinta is here to talk to us about embracing your story as a single mother.  Single motherhood is not about being less than or the idea that you’re not doing life in the right way - it’s an empowered lifestyle and choice.

Jacinta makes it count by trying every day to be a better mum to her boys by being more present, conscious and tuned in to their needs.

Jacinta was inspired to write her new book to shift the stigma around single mothers. She interviewed 40 women for the book and shared her own anecdotes. She had the aim to reassure women that being a single parent is an emboldening life choice and will be the role of their lives.

You’re not alone and it’s not the circumstances that cause suffering, it’s our reaction to the circumstances. You can control the narrative and the stories you tell about your life. Jacinta creates her life from her hopes and dreams, and not from other people’s expectations.

Through writing her own narrative, Jacinta has created space and found an amazing community that resonates with the energy she’s putting out. Meditation is incredibly important for Jacinta and she makes sure she dedicates 20 minutes to the start and end of every day.

I’m so grateful to have Jacinta on the show, her advice on the importance of creating time to craft practices that support you in your journey will resonate with everyone. Check out her book to find out more!
