al-Arbaʿūn an-Nawawiyyah (40 Ḥadīth) of Imām an-Nawawī (raḥimahullāh), with the explanations of Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (hafidhahullāh) and Shaykh Aḥmad an-Najmī (raḥimahullāh), taught by Ustādh Abdul Hakeem Mitchell (hafidhahullāh)
    • Ḥadīth 36: "Whosoever removes a worldly distress from a believer, Allāh will remove from him…" – Seeking Knowledge
    • Relieving a brother's distress by a loan, charity or comfort is repaid in kind on the Day of Resurrection
    • Easing a debtor is by giving him more time without adding to the debt, or by waiving it, which is better
    • Concealing a Muslim means advising him privately about his fault, not exposing him in gatherings
    • Only Sharīʿah knowledge shows the path to Paradise; it is sought by travelling, reading, memorising and study
    • One held back by his deeds will not be raised by his lineage

    • Ḥadīth 35: "Do not envy one another; do not inflate prices one to another…" – Brotherhood and Piety
    • Envy, wishing a blessing removed from another, divides the Muslims; wishing for the like of it is ghibṭah
    • Najsh is raising a price with no intention to buy; selling over a brother's sale is not allowed
    • Do not belittle a Muslim: the measure is the īmān in the heart, not looks, wealth or status
    • A Muslim's blood, wealth and honour are sacred; backbiting is forbidden and advice is given privately
    • This ḥadīth is no proof for keeping silent about innovation and its people; the Salaf spoke the truth about them

  • Lesson 26 – 40 Ḥadīth of Imām an-Nawawī – Ustādh Abdul Hakeem Mitchell – Ḥadīth 34
al-Arbaʿūn an-Nawawiyyah (40 Ḥadīth) of Imām an-Nawawī (raḥimahullāh), with the explanations of Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (hafidhahullāh) and Shaykh Aḥmad an-Najmī (raḥimahullāh), taught by Ustādh Abdul Hakeem Mitchell (hafidhahullāh)
    • Ḥadīth 34: "Whosoever amongst you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand…" – Correcting the Evil
    • Enjoining good and forbidding evil is one of the foundations of Islām, because it reforms society
    • Evil (munkar) is what Allāh and His Messenger forbade, rejected by sound nature and sound minds
    • Changing by hand belongs to those with authority: the rulers, the ḥisbah, and the head over his own home
    • One with knowledge but no authority uses his tongue: he explains, advises and informs those in charge
    • The weakest level is the heart: hating the evil and its people and keeping away from them
    • The ruler is advised, not opposed by hand or by public speech; protests are not a legislated way of forbidding evil

    • Ḥadīth 32: "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm" – There Should Be No Harm
    • It comes both connected and mursal (Mālik), and is strong through its chains; what a mursal ḥadīth is
    • "No harm": you harm no one; "no reciprocating": you do not repay harm with harm
    • Equal retribution is permitted, but pardoning is better and spreads love between people
    • Ḥadīth 33: "…the onus of proof is upon the claimant…" – The Proof is Upon the Claimant
    • No one, even the most truthful, is given what he claims by the claim alone, or corruption would follow

    • Ḥadīth 30: "Allāh the Exalted has obligated religious duties, so do not neglect them…" – The Limits of the Sharīʿah
    • Allāh's limits mark the lawful and unlawful: the lawful is not exceeded and the unlawful not even approached
    • What He is silent about is left unasked out of mercy, not forgetfulness, for Allāh does not forget

    • Ḥadīth 26: "For every day on which the sun rises an act of charity is due for every joint…" – The Paths of Goodness
    • Reconciling between two people is a great charity, and the one who reconciles must be just
    • A good word, every step to the prayer, and removing harm from the road are each a charity
    • Two rakʿahs of the ḍuḥā prayer suffice in place of all 360 charities

    • Sin is what troubles the believer's soul and what he hates people to see

    • Ḥadīth 24 (continued): "…any more than a needle decreases the sea if put into it"
    • Allāh is Self-Sufficient and Generous, and His dominion is vast
    • Reward is by deeds, not lineage: whoever finds good praises Allāh, and whoever finds otherwise blames himself

    • A ḥadīth qudsī: its wording and its meaning are from Allāh

    • Oppressing anyone is forbidden, even a disbeliever, and the supplication of the oppressed is answered
    • Guidance of explaining reaches everyone; guidance of acceptance is for the believers, so ask Allāh for it
    • Allāh is not harmed by sin nor benefited by obedience; it is we who need to worship Him
