Плевен

Плевен е град в северна България, известен най-вече с Обсадата на Плевен от 1877 г., която проправя пътя към падането на Отоманската империя по време на Руско-турската война. Обсадата е важна също така, защото тази битка фактически довежда до възстановяването на България като страна, независима от Румъния.

Обсадата трае пет месеца и 38 000 румънци загиват, опитвайки се да превземат града в четири отделни щурма. Градоначалниците в края на краищата се предават, но на руските войски вече са нанесени щети. Предизвиканото от обсадата забавяне дава възможност на западноевропейските войски да се намесят и да попречат на християнската войска да отвоюва Константинопол.

Развитието на цивилизацията в Плевен може да бъде проследено най-малко до епохата на неолита. Тук са направени няколко съществени археологически открития, измежду които едно от най-важните е ранната християнска базилика от 4. в.

Благодарение на разположението си в плодотворен район, заобиколен от ниските варовикови хълмове на плевенските възвишения, днес Плевен е важно средище на земеделието. През района тече река Вит, която осигурява достатъчно вода за земеделието. Другите важни промишлени отрасли в града включват металообработване, петролообработване и машиностроене. Градът е оживен индустриален център, където идват много чуждестранни вложители, които използват парите си за изграждане на магазини и пазари.

Pleven

Pleven, a city in northern Bulgaria, is known mostly for the 1877 Siege of Plevna, which paved the way for the Ottoman Empire to fall during the Russo-Turkish War. The siege was also important because this battle actually led to the country of Bulgaria's restoration as a nation independent from Romania.

The siege lasted five months, and thirty-eight thousand Romanians died trying to take the city in four separate assaults. The city's leaders did surrender in the end, but by then the damage had been done to the Russian forces. The delay caused by the siege enabled the armies from Western Europe to intervene and prevent Constantinople from being reclaimed by a Christian army.

The history of civilization at Pleven can be traced at least as far back as the Neolithic age. A number of important archaeological discoveries have been made there, one of the most important of which is the early Christian basilica, dating from the fourth century.

Today Pleven is a major center of agriculture, lying in a rich area surrounded by the Pleven Heights, a group of low hills made of limestone. The Vit River flows through the area, providing more than adequate water for agriculture. Other important industries in the city include metalworking, oil processing, and machinery construction. The city bustles as a center of industry that's seeing a lot of foreign investors come in and spend their money to set up stores and markets.
