Czech author Karel Capek was best known for his science fiction works, particularly his novel entitled War with the Newts and his play called R.U.R., which is the place where the term “robot” was first introduced.
Capek was born in 1890 in the Bohemian town of Male Svatonovice.
During his teenage years, he fell in love with visual arts, particularly Cubism.
He attended Charles University in Prague and then went on to Sorbonne in Paris.
He suffered from a serious and debilitating spinal condition called ankylosing spondylitis which exempted him from serving in the military during World War I.
Living in Prague as a bystander during the war, most of his political ideas were shaped by it.
In his early years he worked as a journalist, focusing on issues like totalitarianism and nationalism.
When he started writing fiction, most of his early works were plays he worked with his brother Josef on.
For most of Capek’s life, he was a journalist by trade, although he wrote both non-fiction and fiction.
Most of his best-known pieces focus on industrial inventions like mass production and nuclear weapons.
He is considered to be one of the founders of classical European science fiction, and he used it to write about ethics, dictatorship, social disasters, the stupidity of the human race, and related topics.
After World War II, the communist regime reluctantly accepted his work.
He died of double pneumonia in 1938 not long after Nazi Germany annexed sections of Czechoslovakia under the terms of the Munich Agreement.
