Pražský orloj pochází ze středověku.
Původně byl nainstalován v roce 1410.
To jej dělá nejstarším orlojem, který doposud funguje a třetím nejstarším na světě.
Je nainstalován na jižní straně věže Staroměstské radnice v Praze.
Mechanismus hodin tvoří tří klíčové součásti. Astronomický ciferník ukazuje polohu Měsíce a Slunce na obloze a řadu dalších astronomických detailů.
Ciferník, který ukazuje čas, se nazývá Procházka apoštolů a zobrazuje postavy 12 Ježíšových učedníků a dalších postav, včetně kosterní reprezentace Smrtky.
Třetí ciferník je kalendář, který obsahuje medailónky zobrazující 12 měsíců v roce.
Nejstarší částí Pražského orloje je astronomický ciferník a mechanické hodiny, které byly vybudovány v roce 1410.
Věří se, že ciferník s kalendářem byl přidán někdy okolo roku 1490.
Od roku 1522 přestaly hodiny několikrát fungovat a prošly opravami.
V 17. století byly na orloj přidány pohybující se sošky.
Poté byly po velké opravě v roce 1868 přidány také postavičky apoštolů.
V roce 1945 během Pražského povstání utrpěly hodiny vážné poškození. Německá armáda tehdy zahájila zápalný útok na Staroměstském náměstí.
Snažili se umlčet vysílání českého Národního výboru proti nacistickému režimu.
Trvalo tři roky, než Češi opravili mechanismus hodin a obnovili postavy.

The Prague Astronomical Clock dates back to medieval times.
It was initially installed in 1410, making it the oldest astronomical clock that is still running and the third oldest one in the world.
It is mounted on Prague's Old Town City Hall on the southern side.
The mechanism of the clock is made of three key components. The astronomical dial indicates the moon's and sun's positions in the sky and a number of other astronomical details.
The dial which indicates the time is called The Walk of the Apostles, and it shows the figures of Jesus' twelve disciples and others, including a skeletal representation of Death.
The third dial is a calendar which contains medallions showing the 12 months of the year.
The oldest part of the Prague Astronomical Clock is the astronomical dial and the mechanical clock, which were built in 1410.
The calendar dial is believed to have been added sometime around 1490.
Since 1552, the clock has stopped working several times and undergone repairs.
In the 1600s, the moving statues were added to the clock.
Then after a major fix in 1865, the figures of the Apostles were added as well.
In 1945 the clock sustained heavy damage during the Prague Uprising when the German army launched an incendiary attack in Prague's Old Town Square.
They were attempting to quiet the Czech National Committee's radio broadcasts against the Nazi regime.
It took about three years for the Czechs to repair the clock's mechanisms and restore the figures on its face.
