The National Gallery of Denmark, known to Danes as the Statens Museum for Kunst, handles art dating from the 1300s all the way up until today.
Not only does the gallery collect and display pieces, but it also registers and researches them.
Most of the pieces in the gallery have their origins in Western culture.
The original gallery began with the Art Chamber owned by Denmark's monarchs. One of Frederick V's Art Chamber Keepers suggested that he make a separate painting collection, and since then the museum has made numerous major art purchases through the centuries.
Among the gallery's collections are almost 9,000 sculptures and paintings, 300,000 pieces done on paper, and over 2,600 plaster casts dating from ancient times as well as medieval times and the Renaissance period.
The National Gallery's painting collection includes pieces dating all the way back to the 1100s from well-known painters throughout history, including Titian, Mantegna, Rembrandt, and others.
The more modern part of the painting collection includes works by Picasso, Nolde, and Matisse, as well as a number of Danish masters like Olaf Rude and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg.
The Royal Cast Collection includes reliefs and plaster casts from well-known buildings all over the world.
Some date back to antiquity, while others are from the Renaissance period.
There are also images from Gothic and Romanesque cathedrals.
The Prints and Drawings collection includes some works of art which were done around the reign of Christian II.
Although there are some works from foreign artists in this collection, most of them are from Danish artists.
