Turks Fruit

Turks Fruit, ook bekend als Turkish Delight, is een Nederlandse film over de romantische relatie tussen een jonge vrouw en een kunstenaar. Paul Verhoeven regisseerde deze film in 1973, met Monique van de Ven en Rutger Hauer in de hoofdrollen.

De film begint met Eric, een beeldhouwer, die ontwaakt uit een droom. Hij is verstoord en het duurt niet lang voordat we ontdekken dat hij zojuist met Olga heeft gebroken. Eric ontmoette Olga tijdens het liften. De twee gingen samenleven en trouwden uiteindelijk, hoewel Olga's moeder tegen het huwelijk was, omdat ze vond dat Eric geen goede match voor Olga was, omdat hij uit een lagere sociale klasse kwam.

Naarmate de relatie tussen Eric en Olga verder gaat, begint ze vreemder en vreemder te doen. Het eindigt in een vechtpartij en Olga vertrekt nadat Eric haar slaat. Eric haalt heel zijn atelier uit elkaar en vernietigt elke herinnering aan Olga die hij tegenkomt.

Als de flashback eindigt, blijft Eric Olga van tijd tot tijd zien, en ze blijft zich vreemd gedragen. Na de scheiding, trouwt Olga met een zakenman uit Amerika, maar die relatie duurt niet lang, zodat ze terugkeert naar haar vaderland.

Eric loopt nog een keer Olga tegen het lijf aan het einde van de film, en ze doet nog steeds raar. Ze valt en hij brengt haar naar het ziekenhuis. Op dat moment horen we dat ze een hersentumor heeft, maar het is te laat om haar leven te redden. Eric blijft van haar houden tot aan het einde van haar leven, als hij haar Turks fruit brengt, dat is het enige soort voedsel dat ze nog wil eten.

Turks Fruit kreeg een Oscar voor Beste Buitenlandse Film in 1973 en werd in 1999 erkend als de Beste Nederlandse Film van de Eeuw.

Turks Fruit, also known as Turkish Delight, is a Dutch movie showing the romantic relationship between a young woman and an artist. Paul Verhoeven directed this 1973 film, which starred Monique van de Ven and Rutger Hauer.

When the film opens up, Eric, who is a sculptor, wakes up from a dream. He is disturbed and it doesn't take long before we discover that he has just broken up with Olga. Eric met Olga while he was hitchhiking. The two ended up living together and eventually marrying, although Olga's mother is opposed to the marriage because she feels that Eric is not a good match for Olga because he is lower class.

As the relationship between Eric and Olga takes its course, she begins to act stranger and stranger. They end up fighting and Olga leaves Eric after he slaps her. Eric tears his studio apart and destroys every reminder of Olga he sees.

When the flashback ends, Eric continues seeing Olga from time to time, and she keeps acting strangely. Her family won't let Eric see her until he goes back to set up a divorce. After the divorce, Olga ends up marrying a businessman from America, but that relationship doesn't last either so she returns to her homeland.

Eric runs into Olga one more time at the end of the movie, and she is still acting strangely. She falls down and he takes her to the hospital. At this point we learn that she has a brain tumor, but it is too late to save her life. Eric loves her to the end of her life, when he brings her Turkish delight, which is the only kind of food that she is willing to eat.

Turks Fruit received an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film in 1973 and was recognized as the Best Dutch Film of the Century in 1999.
