In this episode of 'Learn English with Teachify' Lewis is here to go over 5 commonly used phrasal verbs by giving explanations, synonyms and examples in test format at the end.

1.     To fall for someone – this means to fall in love with someone, usually quickly.  People sometimes speak about love at first sight, well you could definitely use this expression if you start to love someone.  E.G. When I was younger, I fell for a girl when we were at school.  My parents fell for each other straight away, apparently.  Enamorarse de alguien

2.     To come up with – meaning to invent, create or imagine.  It’s very similar to another phrasal verb, make up but also, think of.  Commonly we say, come up with an example, come up with an idea or come up with a plan.  Have you ever come up with an amazing idea?  Are you normally a creative person who comes up with plenty of plans and ideas? Pensar en, crear, imaginar.

3.     To piss someone off – this is quite British / Australian, maybe less common than in America.  It means to make somebody angry or annoyed.  E.G. I think I was quite an annoying kid, so I imagine I pissed my sister off quite a lot.  Do you know anyone who pisses you off?  Sometimes your colleagues, bosses or friends can piss you off.  Enfadar a alguien.  

4.     To stick with something – this is quite commonly used with new year’s resolutions, diets, productivity goals and similar.  Maybe if you’re trying to quit smoking, don’t give up, make sure you stick with it.  E.G. I want to get fit so I’m going to the gym, but it’s quite a hard routine to stick with.  Seguir con. 

5.     Get out of something – this means to free yourself from an obligation, in particular one that you don’t want to do.  E.G. my friend has a presentation which he’s trying to get out of.  I think he’s going to come up with an excuse.  You might have a meeting which you want to get out of.  Librarse de.   

Let’s just recap that and make sure we’ve nailed it. 

1.     Stop doing that please, it’s so annoying, you’re pissing me off.  

2.     I have a friend’s wedding next month but I can’t afford it, I need to get out of it somehow, perhaps using an excuse.  

3.     Can you come up with an example?  If not, come up with a quick story.  

4.     I’ve been on a diet this year but it’s tough, either way I’m determined to stick with it.

5.     The moment I went on my first date with my girlfriend, I knew she was the one for me, I fell for her so quickly.

In this episode of Learn English with Teachify Lewis takes you through 5 different English expressions which have been 'taught' on our Instagram account before.  He gives explanations, examples and finishes with a little test.  Given that it's a short one, here you have the transcript, more or less.

1.     The first expression is actually just an adjective, a lovely colloquial one – packed.  Synonyms are busy, full or crowded.  Most beaches in summer are packed, bars in Seville tend to be packed and my agenda is quite packed too.

2.     Next, the second expression is a rule of thumb.  This means a general rule, or a guideline.  Think about English grammar, often there are exceptions but teachers can give you some useful rules of thumb to follow. 

3.     Thirdly, one of my favourites which we use a lot is off the top of my head.  It means without preparation or thought, in class we ask students to give some examples off the top of their heads.  E.G. The best city I’ve visited, hmmm, I’m not sure but off the top of my head I’d have to say that Rome is the best city I’ve visited but maybe just because I’m thinking about eating some carbonara right now. 

4.     Fourthly, bear in mind.  Interestingly, bear as a verb is written exactly the same as the animal, a bear.  However, in this case it means consider, take into account or keep in mind.  E.G.  You need to bear in mind that learning a language is never easy. 

5.     Last but not least, get the gist.  This expression means to understand the main points or a general summary.  If you listen to an audiobook you don’t need to understand everything but you must get the gist at least.  

There we go, 5 lovely expressions all of which were taken from our Instagram account and were posted last year so we’ll continue to pick 5 expressions each month and provide additional examples and explanations.  If you don’t follow us, what are you waiting for?
