We’re often sold the idea that buying a home is the ‘American Dream’ — but for Erica, it never seemed to be her primary focus. Instead, she was happy with renting, having flexibility and focusing her financial efforts elsewhere.
Then, everything changed when she realized that renting in North America is much different than renting elsewhere. We’ve all had a loud neighbour with a barking dog or crying baby, but for Erica, the decision was more so about the disillusionment of renting and the lack of policies to make renting feel safer for Canadians.
Erica Alini is a personal finance reporter at Globe and Mail. At Global News, she wrote the wildly popular newsletter Money123 and was the face and creator of the network’s Money123 personal finance series, which aired on Global National every Saturday evening for nearly two years.

Ellyce Fulmore is a queer and neurodivergent millennial who helps others rewrite their money story, pay off debt, and create financial freedom without restriction. She takes an intersectional approach to finances by recognizing and addressing how privilege, race, gender, sexuality, and mental health can affect your ability to build wealth.
When we’re just starting out with our financial future, it’s not unusual to look for guidance in professionals that are accessible. Typically, that means we head straight to the bank for advice.
Unfortunately, not every salesperson at the bank will know what is best for your unique financial situation, and sometimes, that can end in disaster. Ellyce was just like you and me when she was told to lock her money up in a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).

We’ve all gotten bad advice. But bad money advice is something that feels like a personal attack, given it can impact nearly every area of your life if you’re not careful. Whether someone tells you to drop off resumes in person or stay in a bad relationship, you need to know that you can say no to any advice that doesn’t serve you.
In today’s episode, Alyssa and Nic discuss common money pet peeves and share some of their own.

Support the showIf you’re trying to buy a home in the Canadian real estate market, you might be feeling one of two ways: frustrated or bitter. Why are both options a bit depressing? Probably because most of my listeners are feeling like they have to battle in a difficult market, whereas others feel like they don’t even have a fighting chance.
Today we’re going to talk to two real estate and personal finance experts who have bought properties, and want to share their best tips for anyone looking to do the same — no matter what their circumstances are.
Romana King is an award-winning personal finance writer, real estate expert, the current Director of Content at Zolo Homebase and now a best-selling Amazon author of House Poor No More. Jordann Brown is the Content Marketing Manager at Zolo Homebase, and a personal finance expert best known as the founder of the popular blog, My Alternate Life.

Investing is something we all take seriously. But, unfortunately, not everyone is as interested in its importance — particularly those who have mass amounts of disposable income and view some newer options as nothing but a fun risk.
If you’re looking at cryptocurrency, or any new investment for that matter, be aware of the potential pump and dump scheme that can take your hard-earned cash and make it disappear faster than you can say Elon Musk.

Who do you trust when it comes to selling online products? We do a deep dive into influencer marketing and how it can impact our finances based on targeted sales and our desire to become the alternate version of ourselves who dress differently, practice unique skincare, are more athletic, and the list goes on and on.
Comparison and finance are two of the most talked-about collaborators when it comes to difficulty with overspending, and social media doesn’t always help.

Laura Danger is a Certified Life Coach, Licensed Educator, Community Advocate and Certified Fair Play Facilitator who has been facilitating, coaching and community organizing in Chicago for over 12 years. She has advanced endorsements in the areas of English as a Second Language and Learning Disabilities. Her various roles have afforded her the honour to act as an advocate for many families, neighbours, students and friends throughout the years.
Working through a global pandemic isn’t something anyone thought they’d be navigating — let alone for three years. When Laura Danger started her career as a teacher, the thought of doing anything else had never crossed her mind. But, when she started to feel burnout and stress that no one should have to live with, she had to make a massive life decision that had no right answer.
Between paying for childcare, trying to be a good partner and giving her all to her students, something had to give. She’s now an advocate for helping demystify domestic labour and educate people on why this unpaid labour matters more than people realize.

Support the showIf you dream about leaving your 9-5 to start your own business, many of the fears that you face might revolve around financial security and the potential for failure. Ahmed knew of these risks when he left his cushy accounting gig to start a small business, but now one year into entrepreneurship, he can proudly say it was worth it. But, the real question is, how did he do it — and can you do it, too?
Ahmed Abosafi was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Calgary in 1999. He went to the University of Calgary for accounting and landed a job at one of the most prestigious firms in the city, where he became a CPA. Ultimately, he found he wasn’t happy working in the accounting industry — or any other industry he tries. Eventually, he landed on his new business, the Red Seed, where he produces, markets and sells premium sunflower seeds in 2018. At first, it was a side hustle, but by 2020, he quit his full-time job as an accountant and is now an entrepreneur and small business owner.
