Josie Balka is an on-air radio personality currently based out of Calgary. She started her career in a very small town, struggling to make ends meet, and has since been facing an uphill battle to make the financial progress many 20-somethings strive to achieve in their professional life. She is very upfront and honest about her lack of financial literacy but is willing to learn.
When you’re young, the idea of moving to a new city with more opportunities sounds like a literal dream. But, what we forget to consider is that living alone in a new place comes with a higher cost of living and more of a desire to Keep Up With the Joneses. When Josie took her first job in Calgary as a radio show host, she had no idea what she was in for, or how difficult it can be to live on so little.
Now, she operates without a budget and is looking to find her 'why' and repay her debt so that she can feel complete financial independence and eliminate her number one stressor: money.

Is it possible to receive a college education without going into debt? The average cost of a program without living expenses in Canada is $12,018, while one year of in-state tuition in the United States is $21,370. No matter what way you spin it, the cost is unaffordable for most and particularly harms lower-income families who are trying to better their future.
Kara discovered her love of finances courtesy of her quarter-life crisis. Broke, underemployed and saddled with student loan debt, she realized that her lack of financial education was crippling her adulthood.
But everywhere she looked, it seemed like only rich, white couples were giving financial advice. Being a single pringle, and working 5 part-time jobs, Kara decided to start Bravely as a place where other people who didn’t fit in in the financial mainstream could come to learn about and change their money.
Kara paid off $25,302 in loans on a salary of less than $30,000, the final $18,000 in just ten months. After becoming debt-free in June 2015, Kara created Bravely to help other women take control of their financial lives.

Buying a home is often labelled as the ‘American Dream’ — but the problem with this sentiment is that oftentimes, homeownership isn’t always the best financial decision. This is particularly true when you buy at a time that doesn’t make sense for you, or when you face home buyer’s remorse, which is more common than we may realize.
What happens when you buy a house at the wrong time? Even worse — when you go to sell and end up losing out because the market crashed and you have to cover closing costs? J. Money shares his story.
Award-winning personal finance blogger, fintech consultant, and daddy x3. With over a decade of building communities online, Jay’s projects have reached over 40 million views and are regularly featured in the media. An avid coin collector, money experimenter, and hip-hop fan, Jay loves connecting the online world with the “real” world and feels blessed to be able to do this every day for a living.
