In my opinion, grammar is important in Italian but it MUST BE presented in real contexts.
Explaining grammar rules and doing exercises is boring and useless to really learn how to speak Italian.
To learn Italian (or any other language) effectively, the student should be able to use that grammar rule in a context and real life situations.
