Propaganda

Propaganda

The 1999 Turkish film Propaganda is a surreal dark comedy.

It is set in 1948 in a small town in Turkey that is about to be divided, literally.

The film stars Kemal Sunal as Mehdi and Metin Akpinar as his best friend Rahim.

Meltem Cumbul also stars in the movie as Filiz.

Sinan Cetin directed the film.

When the movie begins, Mehdi is given the task of formally creating the border between Syria and Turkey right through his hometown.

Through the course of the film, there is much pain experienced by most of the characters as their lives are literally shredded apart. Lovers are separated and families are torn in two by the new national border.

A village that was once united becomes divided by a role of barbed wire fencing.

Mehdi ends up being separated from his best friend Rahim, who happens to live on the other side of the line.

Unfortunately, Rahim is also one of the most important men in town because he is their only doctor.

In the end, the people of the village overcome the obstacles created by the new national boundary.

Propaganda received the 1999 Bogey Award in Germany and the 1999 Golden Goblet for Best Film.

It was shown at both the Shanghai International Film Festival, which was where it was awarded the Golden Goblet, and the Istanbul International Film Festival.

The movie is based on a true story and was filmed entirely in the city of Hatay, Turkey.
