Mevlana Festivali

Kutlama, Mevlana’nın Allah’a olan kavuşmasının temsiliyle sona erer.

Mevlana Festival

The Festival of the Whirling Dervishes, or Mevlana Festival, is a celebration commemorating the death of the thirteenth century Sufi Saint Mevlana, also known as Rumi.

Rumi believed that communication with God was achieved by dance.

This is the beginning of the dance of the whirling dervishes, dancers in white, swirling robes, black cloaks, and headgear which is cone-shaped. Watching the whirling dervishes, one has the impression that the dancers enter a trance-like state, and it can become mesmerizing to the audience.

The Mevlana Festival normally starts around December tenth and concludes December seventeenth each year.

The celebration ends on a spectacular note as Mevlana is united in marriage with Allah.

The celebration in Konya, Turkey is attended by over one million people,

so if you choose to travel to Turkey in order to enjoy this celebration, it is important to make your travel plans and secure accommodations well in advance.

Rumi is considered one of the world's great mystic philosophers, with religious writings and poetry the most respected and beloved in Islamic culture and religions beyond Islam.

His poetry is reported to be among the biggest-selling works in the US,

proving that his work has an appeal well outside the culture of Muslims and Middle Eastern religions.

After Mevlana died, a group called the Mevlevi brotherhood was established, calling themselves the whirling dervishes and using dance as one of the foremost means of worship ceremonies. Mevlana's contention that union with God could be attained with dance is brought to the forefront in the use of dance in worship by his followers.
