We’ve all been there – feeling stuck, helpless, and unable to see a way forward. But according to life coach Joel Elston and host Walt Thiessen, the key may lie within our own minds.
In their discussion on learned helplessness, Joel and Walt delve deeply into how our internal conversations can either hold us back or propel us forward. “Learned helplessness is when you don’t allow people the power to fix their problems. It’s blaming the victim,” Joel explains. But the opposite – learned resilience – is possible.
Walt shares his own experience overcoming chronic pain, noting how simple movements relieved symptoms by “realigning my body.” This showed him “the pain had nothing to do with the physiology…everything that’s going on in my mind.”
Joel echoes this, recounting a client who was told her fibromyalgia was incurable – until lifestyle changes like losing 100 pounds made her “70% better.” Their conversation highlights how taking action, even small steps, can shift perspectives.
But what keeps us stuck? Joel believes “a large chunk” stems from putting too much stock in authority figures’ opinions. Walt asks a pivotal question – “Isn’t the flipping of the switch what comes first? And then we feel the motivation?” Joel agrees the internal decision to change mindsets is key.
For anyone feeling helpless, their message is clear – “Flip the switch in your mind, even though nothing else has changed.” Internal drive opens doors external “solutions” can’t reach. As Joel says, have the courage to try – “What’s it going to be any worse?” Don’t we all deserve to find out?
