7 Spiritual Practices (7SP)
The 7 Spiritual Practices (7SP) are simple activities that can help a person develop inner peace, self-awareness, emotional balance, and a deeper sense of meaning or connection. They can be practiced regularly, either individually or together.
1. Prayer
Prayer is communicating with or connecting to God, a higher power, or something greater than oneself.
It may involve asking for guidance, expressing gratitude, seeking forgiveness, or simply sharing one's thoughts and feelings.
Benefits:
- Develops faith and hope
- Provides comfort during difficult times
- Encourages gratitude
- Helps people feel connected to something greater
Example: Spending five minutes each morning thanking God for the things you have and asking for guidance for the day.
2. Meditation
Meditation is the practice of intentionally focusing the mind and becoming calm and aware. It can involve focusing on the breath, a word, a prayer, or simply observing thoughts without reacting to them.
Benefits:
- Reduces stress
- Improves concentration
- Promotes emotional calm
- Helps develop self-awareness
Example: Sitting quietly for 10 minutes, focusing on your breathing, and gently bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders.
3. Mindfulness
Mindfulness means paying full attention to the present moment, without immediately judging what you experience.
Unlike meditation, which is often a dedicated practice, mindfulness can be practiced during ordinary activities such as eating, working, or talking to someone.
Benefits:
- Helps you stay in the present
- Reduces overthinking
- Improves awareness of thoughts and emotions
- Helps you appreciate everyday experiences
Example: When drinking tea, focus completely on its smell, temperature, taste, and texture instead of looking at your phone or thinking about what you need to do next.
4. Walking
Walking as a spiritual practice means using walking as an opportunity for reflection, connection with nature, gratitude, or mindfulness.
It is sometimes called walking meditation when the focus is deliberately placed on each step and the surrounding experience.
Benefits:
- Clears the mind
- Reduces stress
- Connects us with nature
- Provides time for reflection
- Supports physical health
Example: Taking a 20-minute walk without headphones or your phone, paying attention to your breathing, footsteps, surroundings, and thoughts.
5. Journalling
Journalling is writing down your thoughts, feelings, experiences, questions, and reflections. It can help you understand yourself more clearly.
A spiritual journal can include things such as gratitude, prayers, goals, personal struggles, lessons learned, and reflections on life.
Benefits:
- Encourages self-reflection
- Helps process emotions
- Identifies patterns in thoughts and behaviour
- Encourages gratitude
- Clarifies goals and values
Example: At the end of each day, write:
- What am I grateful for?
- What did I learn today?
- What challenged me?
- What do I want to improve tomorrow?
6. Silence
Silence is intentionally spending time without unnecessary talking, entertainment, or digital distractions. It creates space to listen to your thoughts and become more aware of your inner life.
Silence does not necessarily mean having no thoughts; rather, it means creating space to observe and listen instead of constantly consuming or producing noise.
Benefits:
- Creates mental space
- Encourages reflection
- Reduces overstimulation
- Can deepen prayer or meditation
- Helps you become more aware of your inner feelings
Example: Spending 10–15 minutes each evening sitting quietly without your phone, television, music, or conversation.
7. Yoga
Yoga combines physical postures, breathing, and focused attention. For many people, it can also be a spiritual practice that encourages awareness of the connection between body, mind, and inner life.
Yoga has different traditions and approaches, so its spiritual meaning varies among practitioners.
Benefits:
- Improves flexibility and strength
- Encourages relaxation
- Develops body awareness
- Can reduce stress
- Combines physical movement with mental focus
Example: Practising gentle yoga for 15–30 minutes while paying attention to your breathing and how your body feels.
How the 7 practices work together
The seven practices can complement one another:
PracticeMain focus
Prayer | Connection and faith
Meditation | Calm and concentration
Mindfulness | Present-moment awareness
Walking | Movement, reflection, and nature
Journalling | Self-reflection
Silence | Inner listening
Yoga | Body–mind awareness
In simple terms:
Prayer connects you → Meditation calms you → Mindfulness grounds you → Walking refreshes you → Journalling helps you understand yourself → Silence helps you listen → Yoga connects body and mind.
You don't have to practise all seven every day. Even 10–15 minutes of one practice consistently can make it meaningful.
