Reading auf Deutsch is such a release. I don't really know what it is about it, but I get pleasure and a sense of relaxing for the time I'm reading. This is Story number 7 from Märchen und Erzählungen für Anfänger, click on the title to look at the book for yourself.

I'm half way through that book for beginners learning to read and comprehend in German. It was such a a surprise when I first discovered this book. I had know idea that teachers sought to simplify learning a foreign language 100 years ago. While it is by no means simple as I think of simple in today's definition, it is easy enough for a student of my level to understand without too much looking up words in the dictionary.

The title of this poem is a fairly well-known saying in English, but how many know that the saying comes from a poem?

Do you know that it comes from a poem?

I'm personally that guy who always sees the negative. I wish I was more like the woman, the man's wife (presumably) who slept soundly, "waited to see", and didn't look for problems before they cropped up.

So, the reading is more a public reminder to myself to hold my tongue when tempted to blurt out all the negatives that might be but haven't yet manifested themselves (and may very well never come to be).

Duolingo is a pretty good play to pick up vocabulary. It's not the only way I get language learning done but it is a starting place. 

This lesson features the INTRO. lesson. I go through the Legendary Challenge. (Not sure what is up with today's misuse of words...I thought lots of people had to know about someone to make them legendary. Or maybe the challenges are legendary, but they just came out with these in the summer, right? It's just a little peeve of mine.)

This story is taken from book of Fairy Tales and Narratives written just for beginners. The Title of which is Märchen und Erzählungen für Anfänger, edited by H. A. Guerber.

These stories are all great if you are looking for a better understanding of how to build up sentences with an ever increasing vocabulary. What they are not is a set of ground-breaking forms of literary genius. Although, I happen to think highly of them in terms of useful educational material. :)

They are repetitive, but deliberately so. Just as the editor mentions in the Preface. 

This story, Number 5 in the sequence, is not only a repetitive telling, it is also very long. It is almost like having two stories in one. 5. Der Riese und Das Kind is quite the long, drawn out formulation. It took about 20 minutes of reading to get through the 4 pages of story. I hope you will find some usefulness in my reading of "The Giant and the Child".

Initially I had planned on two lessons, but as I finished the second I thought to go on. That way, I could finish out Unit 1.

How many of you have done enough of the course to read in Norwegian? Can anyone hold a conversation after completing the course (or before completing)?

What can be said? Learning a language is rough work, with difficulties in correct pronunciation, or at least good enough that someone can understand what you are saying. Not only that, but you must master sufficient vocabulary to give yourself a chance at being able to enter into conversation in the first place. And finally, Grammar. 

It seems that Duolingo is a good place to begin with vocabulary. After which, start reading books away from the app to increase understanding and pick up more vocab. while learning to recognize standard sentence structure. 

My goal is simply to pick up vocab. little by little. At this point, there is virtually no chance that I will ever use it with a native speaker so, just for fun.

Der Pfannkuchen gets it right. There are many opportunities to learn and understand how a word or phrase is used. This is a German learner reading a short Tale. It was written over 100 years ago to aid beginners in acquiring German vocabulary.
