Philippi was considered a "Rome away from Rome," as much of the population had Roman citizenship and endeavored to live their lives as though they were within Rome itself.

In his letter to the Philippian church, Paul reminds the believers that their true citizenship is in heaven. Just as Philippi was a colony of Rome, the church is a colony of heaven, an outpost in a foreign land. Although our geographical location may be here, our greatest loyalty lies with our true kingdom — the kingdom of heaven.

When Jesus’ disciples asked who would be the greatest in the Kingdom, Jesus said that those who humbled themselves like a small child would be greatest. They needed to change their perspective and their attitude.

Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? That is a question that Jesus’ disciples privately discussed and debated. When Jesus answered the question, He did so in a way that they were surely not anticipating. Unless they became like children, they would not even enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

The disciples needed a change of heart and mind. Many of us do as well. We must humble ourselves and become like children. We need the accept the humble position of a young child within the household. We need a childlike faith which holds and implicit trust and confidence in the character, word, and commands of the heavenly Father.

Romans 8:28 is a well-known and well-loved verse, but it is often misunderstood and misapplied. The true promise of this verse is not that God is working out ‘all things’ to give you comfort in life, but that He is working out all things to bring you into conformity with Christ.

In this passage from Matthew's Gospel we see both Jesus' prophetic statement that He was "about to be delivered into the hands of men" and an interaction between Him and Peter regarding paying the Temple tax.

In Matthew 17 and in the parallel passage found in Mark 9, Jesus' disciples are unable to heal a boy possessed by a demon who often through him into the water or into the fire. After Jesus casts out the demon, He explains to His disciples that it is by faith — even faith the size of a mustard seed — that we can accomplish great things to the glory of God.
