What does it really take to build a law practice, fight difficult cases, and become the kind of attorney willing to keep going when others might walk away?
On Episode 68 of Legally Exhausted, Abe Ovadia sits down with his friend Attorney Raimundo Ytulvides for a wide-ranging conversation about law, business, personal injury, insurance companies, discipline, fitness, and the realities of building a legal career.
Raimundo’s path is anything but typical. Born and raised in Hialeah, Florida, he remembers being a child and walking into a courthouse with his father and thinking, “I want to work here.”
But there was no roadmap waiting for him.
With no attorneys in his immediate family to guide him through the process, Raimundo had to figure out college and law school as he went. His journey took him through FIU, economics, accounting, a full scholarship to law school, earning his CPA credentials, and working in the accounting and tax world—including experience with major firms—before ultimately realizing that he wanted to be in the courtroom.
Today, that combination of accounting knowledge and trial experience gives Raimundo a unique perspective. He explains how understanding numbers, financial statements, present and future value, and damages can help an attorney tell a client's story to a jury.
Raimundo also opens up about starting his own firm with zero clients and how an unexpected case during COVID helped him begin building his book of business. One neighbor needed help dealing with an eviction. That case led to another person, then another, demonstrating how helping one person can ultimately create an entire network of referrals.
The conversation then gets deeper into the realities of insurance litigation and personal injury.
Raimundo discusses why he is willing to take difficult cases, why a police report doesn't necessarily tell the entire story of an accident, and why attorneys sometimes have to investigate, take depositions, find experts, and fight through contested liability to uncover what actually happened.
His perspective is also intensely personal.
Raimundo shares the story of suffering a serious finger injury before becoming a personal injury attorney. What followed were insurance issues, delays, difficulty finding the right doctor, multiple surgeries, scar tissue, and permanent limitations in movement. That experience gave him firsthand insight into what an injured client can experience while waiting for treatment—and why delays that look insignificant on paper can have lasting consequences for someone's life.
Abe and Raimundo also discuss:
• Property insurance claims and insurers entering receivership
• Why settlement amounts can't simply be compared from case to case
• The pressure created by billboards and social media showing massive verdicts and settlements
• Why the biggest-looking case isn't necessarily the case that required the best lawyering
• Trial advocacy and pretrial skills every young attorney should learn
• Building systems and tracking data inside a law firm
• Client expectations and the attorney-client relationship
• Why lawyers are ultimately storytellers
• The stress, isolation, and pressure that can come with practicing law
• Fitness as an outlet for stress and a source of discipline
• Books and habits that have influenced Raimundo's mindset
• His goal of building a selective nationwide practice focused on meaningful cases
And because this is Legally Exhausted, it isn't all law.
Abe and Raimundo talk about becoming friends, working out together, attending the Morgan & Morgan conference in Las Vegas, early-morning workouts, doing extra pushups between exercises, and Raimundo asking Abe a question he still remembers:
“What did you do to earn your meal today?”
The episode is ultimately about more than becoming a lawyer. It's about discipline, resilience, systems, relationships, doing the work, and being willing to fight when a case—or life itself—doesn't give you the easy route.
