BLIZZCON 2019 

First, J. Allen Brack addressed the situation with Blitzchung.  He said, I’m sorry, we moved too fast and I’m accountable. We aspire to bring the world together, when we get it right, the community comes together.  My actions will say more about my intent to do better in the future. Seemed a sincere, emotional apology.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Starcraft: New Villain commander: Arcturus Mengsk

Diablo:  Diablo 4 was announced and shown. Very dark and will feature the Barbarian, the Sorceress and the Druid, so far.  Lots of cool stuff there, but no release date.

Heroes of the Storm: BlizzCon attendees and Virtual Ticket holders, get the new hero Deathwing, for free.

World of Warcraft: New Make a wish pet, Baby Alpaca, Dotty.  

World of Warcraft: New expansion, Shadowlands was announced and shown. 

Overwatch:  New announcement of Overwatch 2.  A PvE focused off-shoot of the game, with no release date.

Warcraft III: Reforged:  Everyone at BlizzCon and a Virtual Ticket gets Beta access, which just started.

Hearthstone: New expansion, Descent of Dragons

* Heading to Dragonblight, where there will be more Dragons than ever before* 140 new cards* New Hero Card – Galakrond.  Everyone gets him free when the set launches.* Galakrond is an ancient Proto-Dragon and manifests as 5 unique Hero cards for the LoE classes: Rogue, Warrior, Warlock, Shaman and Priest.* New keyword: Invoke – Play cards with the Invoke keyword several times to upgrade Galakrond* Galakrond has a different battlecry and hero power in each of the evil classes* Dragon Breath cards: These are spells that give you powerful bonuses if you are holding a dragon.* Sidequests: Mages, Druids, Hunters, and Paladins can do Sidequests, cards that offer powerful rewards, but are easier to complete than standard Quest cards. These do not start in your hand.* Everyone gets a Legendary Dragon when the set goes live.

BATTLEGROUNDS

* New game mode: Battlegrounds – 8 player mode that is inspired by the autobattle genre.* Open beta of Battlegrounds on November 12th, BlizzCon attendees and Virtual Ticket holders have access now.* 8 player, free for all.  You choose 1 of 3 Heroes, each with a unique Hero Power.* Then you start a Recruit phase, where you build your deck by purchasing cards using gold.* Then a Fight phase, where the battle auto completes for you, where minions fight from left to right in order.* Then you rotate back to Recruit phase, with another gold to spend.* You can upgrade your tavern by Cheering (which costs gold) during the Recruit phase.  You get more powerful minions to choose from later. You can upgrade to a max of 6.* You can choose to Freeze the available minions for free, to use the next turn if you want to save them.* If you get 3 of the same minion, it will upgrade to a Golden version which has better stats.* There is a page on the website where you can see all the unique minions and heroes, plus a leaderboard.  playhearthstone.com/battlegrounds

Your Month In Hearthstone Emails

* Blizzard / Hong Kong controversy* Facts – 2 weeks ago* Blitzchung, during an interview with the official Hearthstone Taiwan stream, made a political statement about the situation going on in Hong Kong.* Blizzard took action against him, by removing him from the tournament, banning him for 1 year and taking back any prizes earned in Season 2 (which amounted to around $10,000.)  * Blizzard also fired the casters who were involved. * Blizzard pointed back to the rules of the competition that clearly state that statements like this (with Blizzard’s discretion) are subject to removal. And they also clearly describe the potential punishment for such behavior.  The punishments placed on Blitzchung were line for line out of the rules.* Since then, Blizzard has issued an official statement regarding the situation.  They reversed the removal of his prize earning saying that he played fairly during the tournament and as result he gets all his winnings.  They also changed his ban to 6 months. * They also changed the ban for the casters to 6 months.* Comments* If Blitzchung had said, “Long live China, down with Hong Kong” and Blizzard had reacted the same way, they would be praised and celebrated.  So I feel like they did what they had to given the situation.* However, I feel like that the punishment was extreme given the circumstances.  I’m glad they addressed the issues and lessened the punishment and gave back his winnings.* Reactions from the community* Numerous players have covered Reddit with messages of leaving Blizzard games in protest.  * Brian Kibler has stepped down as a caster of the Hearthstone Global Games.* About 20 Blizzard employees staged a walk out protest due to the situation.* Several Senators/Representatives have called out Blizzard for their actions* Plans announced to protest at BlizzCon.* I also find it funny that recently, Riot games (maker of League of Legends) announced a bunch of new updates and games (including a competitor to Hearthstone).  Many players have made vocal announcements that they are leaving Blizzard games and moving to Riot games. All this turmoil comes about around Blizzard supporting China versus Hong Kong right?  Did you guys realize that Riot games is 100% owned by TenCent, which is 100% Chinese owned? How is that better?

BLIZZCON 2019

The schedule has been released.  LOTS of Coming Soon! Slots. The only solids is the Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone updates.  On Day 2 there are Overwatch updates and WoW Q&A slots and more Coming Soon! Slots.

* New Update from Blizzard!* New Events* They want to add more large-scale in-game events with rewards, themed Tavern Brawls,  and changes that could temporarily (or permanently) create fun new experiences for players. * This starts in a couple weeks with Dungeon Run-inspired Tavern Brawls, dual-class Arenas, Legendary quest rewards, and some meta-shifting changes (we’ll talk about in a minute)* There will be a blog post on October 4th that goes into details about this ‘spooky event’ and ‘try not to lose your head’.* Now that the ladder has solidified, they are going to throw a wrench into things.  Temporarily, they are going to bring 23 cards back from Wild and give everyone copies of them.  * Cards like Ragnaros, the Firelord and N’Zoth the Corruptor.* LIMITED TIME – will go away after the event* Full list of 23 cards on the Oct 4 blog update* 1,000 win class portraits!  This will retroactively count your wins.* QoL improvements* Alternate search terms for hard to find cards in your collection.  For example, you can search for snip or snap to find SN1P-SN4P.* Quest changes – cutting some of the less popular daily quests and tuning down their requirements to make them quicker to complete.  * Splitting most quests into 2 buckets, Easy (50g) and Slightly More Difficult (60g).  Rerolling the SMD quests will get you an Easy quest.* Chapter 3 – Khartut’s Tomb* New Hero Unlocked – Elise Starseeker – Druid / Priest* End boss – Xatma, Plague Lord of Death* Twist – Plague of Death – Each player starts the game with a token Eternal Tomb. Each time a minion dies, the tomb gradually unlocks to unleash a powerful Deathrattle minion.  Then closes and waits for another.* Recently a player posted on Reddit discussing the fact that he had been banned for playing SN1P-SN4P Warlock in wild mode. Turns out there are several third party software programs that is removing the animations from the game, making it possible to play more cards than should be possible.  (sometimes around 50-70 times). This will trigger an automatic ban by their cheat detection software. He posted on Reddit because he appealed the ban and it was upheld. But the player contended that he did nothing wrong and had not used the software.  * Blizzard posted a response last week saying that they studied the situation, gathered data and determined that there are some circumstances where a player can end up with a significant amount of extra time on their turn, even over a minute. And that they now know that some of these turns were possible under normal play because the turn had been given so much added time.* They reversed a lot of bans around this situation and they are updating the procedures that led to this bans to ensure they only catch cheaters.* One interesting note was made in another thread* Each chapter of Tombs of Terror come with their own unique bosses and we will only fight those bosses until we beat the chapter. Replaying a chapter you completed, the pool of bosses will contain bosses from all the chapter’s you’ve beaten. * And a small client update went out the other day.  It fixes a few card art and animation issues and they fixed an issue (server-side) that caused Plague Lord persistent health to fail to save.
