The final film in Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings came to a conclusion twenty years ago this month. Following the success of the first two films, the question remained whether the third could meet the expectation - and the hype - in the days leading up to its release. Needless to say, the film was a hit on an epic scale, coming in as the top film of 2003 and the first film to cross the billion-dollar mark since Titanic. Aside from financial success, the film was hailed as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time, delivering a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and earning praise on every level of production. At the 76th Academy Awards, the film took home an Oscar in all eleven categories for which it was nominated, including Best Picture. Only one film can wear the crown of greatest fantasy epic ever made - is it The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King?

Christopher Nolan loves playing with time in his films like Memento, Inception, and Tenet and telling stories about the push and pull between family and duty. For his follow-up to The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan plays with both big ideas in a story about a future where mankind's only hope rests among the stars, and a father who must leave his children behind to venture to a new galaxy. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine, this 2014 film was a runaway success and the tenth-highest grossing film of the year. The film also garnered praise from astronomers for its scientific accuracy and portrayal of theoretical astrophysics. Now we're taking to the stars for our final trip this Chronovember with a film that's truly Interstellar!

Doctor Who first hit the airwaves in 1963 - sixty years ago! - but the TARDIS went dark in 1989 for an indefinite hiatus. In the mid-1990s, plans started brew to import the iconic British sci-fi series across the pond to America. The BBC partnered with the Fox network to produce a TV movie, which, if it performed well, could serve as the backdoor pilot for a revived series. English actor Paul McGann took over the TARDIS console as the Eighth Doctor after Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor was *checks notes* brutally gunned down by a machine-gun wielding street gang on prime-time television. Co-starring American actress Daphne Ashbrook as the doctor who tries to save him (see what I did there?) with Eric Roberts hot on their heels as The Master. Unfortunately, the special presentation was not a success, and the good Doctor remained in exile until regenerating in 2005 as Christopher Eccleston. But this is Chronovember, so we're whipping out our sonic screwdrivers and partying like it's 1999!

After lengthy delays due to director turnover, the pandemic, studio shake-ups, and behind-the-scenes drama featuring its lead actor, DC Comics' Scarlet Speedster finally raced onto movie screens this past summer. Director Andy Muscetti helmed the pic, staring Ezra Miller as a Barry Allen who goes back in time to meet another Barry Allen, Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Ben Affleck as Batman and also bringing Michael Keaton back as Batman. Despite bringing back your Dad's Batman and boasting a multiverse of meta-references, the film failed to find success in the Father's Day frame and fizzled out, making less than its production budget at the domestic box office. This all but sealed the fate of the DCEU, with James Gunn taking the reins. But don't despair! We're reuniting the crew from Crimson Comet with Haley, Rum Daddy, and Jonolobster joining to talk about The Flash one last time. Run, Barry, run!

We're not ready to leave Halloween behind, so we're kicking off the month with a comedy-horror classic courtesy of Sam Raimi. After spending not one but two sylvan getaways battling Deadites courtesy of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis (in The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn), S-Mart employee Ash Williams takes the ultimate unplugged vacation all the way back to the year 1300 in Medieval England. Up against time with an army of Deadites storming the castle, Ash must overcome the lack of technology and his own evil twin to get back to the future. Starring Bruce Campbell, the film was neither a commercial nor critical success, but has gone on to join the first two films as cult favorites. Now we're swallowing the juice, saying the magic words, and taking our chainsaw hands to Army of Darkness!

Legends of Halloween draws to a close with a classic from the master of twists, M. Night Shyamalan himself! An isolated 19th century village is surrounded by mysterious woods filled with threatening creatures, but when a terrible crime is committed, a young woman uncovers the village's dark secret. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, and Brendan Gleeson, Shymalan's third film since his breakout hit The Sixth Sense was a box office success but disappointed critics, with Roger Ebert placing it on his "Most Hated" list. Yet with a haunting score from James Newton Howard, featuring violinist Hilary Hahn, and cinematography by Roger Deakins, there's plenty to speak of. Except for Those We Don't Speak Of. Welcome to The Village!

Legends of Halloween continues with more vampire hunting action, this time coutesy of Marvel Comics! Before Bryan Singer's X-Men (2000), before Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), and before Ang Lee's Hulk (2003), director Stephen Norrington launched Marvel to the big screen with his blood-drenched take on the daywalking half-vampire Blade. Played by Wesley Snipes, the film also stars Stephen Dorff as the villanous Deacon Frost and Kris Kristofferson as Blade's mentor and armorer, Whistler. The film was a commercial success, spawning two sequels and a TV series, as well as setting up the template for the Marvel Cinematic Universe films to come. With an MCU installment on the way starring Mahershala Ali, we're turning the clocks back 25 years to see if Blade still looks sharp!
