Day 2 at the RNC: Many high-profile, dyed-in-the wool Republicans are dumping Trump and finding welcome mats at the Democrats' door. Will this trend continue?

Progressives don't seem interested in forging common ground with other parties on Election 2020 issues. Why not?

No racism within the party, Trump's spokesfolk say, and they've dragged out two prminent black Republicans to  "prove" it.

The Republican National Convention begins today in Charlotte, N.C., and ends Aug. 27. Like the Democratic convention (Aug. 17 - 20 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin), the Republican party faithful will showcase their high-profile candidates running this election year and make the case to voters to keep the party in power for the next four years.

Leid Stories asks listeners to decipher the political mood as the parties gear up for battle. Are voters excited about Election 2020, or are other matters commanding their attention?

Welcome to "Free Your Mind Friday" on Leid Stories. It's our weekly open forum for listeners who have a thing or two to get off their chests but somehow missed the opportunity.

>> House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has summoned her troops back to Washington for a must-win fight that President Trump started--and seemed to be winning--all by himself after the Democrats went back home on recess.

Whatever allegedly was done by Trump and his minions to tinker with the U.S. Postal Service's mail delivery systems and procedures ahead of the general election will now be investigated for possible fraud. Fireworks guaranteed.

>> The Biden/Harris ticket is strengthening its appeal, even as former President Barack Obama reportedly is confiding in political insiders his fear that the gaffe-prone Biden might screw things up.

>> More and more, "news" stories seem to be suggesting that it's time the country return to "normal." Is it? Who gets to make that call?

We enter the murky world of race, racial classification and racial politics in the United States, directly referencing both former president Barack Obama and  Kamala Harris, who presidential candidate Joe Biden has named his vice presidential running mate.

As was with Obama, Harris's racial identity has already become a media obsession, not about who and what she is,  but about who and what she is not. She is not white.

Leid Stories starts with that premise today, as we look at how Harris's nomination revives centrality of race in America and how it continues to shape our lives.
