The Government, the People and the Coronavirus Pandemic

Since the onset of the corona virus in the United States, which now is part of a pandemic afflicting many countries of the world, there have been, and will continue to be, dramatic changes in practically every aspect of our way of life.

Most significantly, these changes will be seen and felt in the relationship between government and the people, with tensions  arising from the power of government to make unilateral decisions and the people's insistence on their democratic rights to check unbridled power of government in a national emergency.

Listeners discuss whether the power equation between government and the people appears to be holding, or whether they see possible overreaching by President Trump and his administration.

All week long we've been discussing the onslaught of the Coronavirus pandemic and the devastating impact it had all over the world before taking aim at an unprepared and vulnerable United States.

The Coronavirus Pandemic: A People's Perspective on A Global Catastrophe

Part 4: Given the magnitude and potentially long-lasting impact the coronavirus will have on practically every key aspect of American life, should the work of reconstituting vital functions of the country be the sole domain and responsibility of the incumbent government? Or, should long-overdue changes be debated now?

How We Learned of It; How We Processed the Information

Listeners recall the moment they learned about the coronavirus, the widespread havoc and high death toll it was causing in China, and the contagion it predictably would spread all over the world.

How did the news media present the story? What was the reaction from the White House? What was your reaction?

The Coronavirus Pandemic: A People's Perspective on A Global Catastrophe.

Leid Stories begins a full week of discussion and debate, raising troubling questions and issues that so far appear to have few or no ready answers.

How do we comprehend and deal with this global catastrophe? Why is it happening? Is it the advent of biological warfare or terrorism?

Leid Stories listeners, being careful to avoid sensationalism and conspiracy theories, interpret for us the moment we're in.

Should  there be an independent investigation into the Democratic party's presidential primaries in Arizona, Florida and Illinois to determine whether any of those statewide elections were compromised, and their results engineered, so as to produce a desired result?

What's Sanders' Next Move?  Yesterday's Democratic primaries in Florida. Illinois and Arizona put Joe Biden, who took all three states, in the catbird seat and  Bernie Sanders in a quandary. For Biden, the road ahead is clear: build momentum and his base, and hammer away at Trump's many policy disasters. But Sanders has a lot to think about in deciding his next move.

It's Only Money!  Seems just about everybody loves the idea now. Ex-presidential candidate Andrew Yang had called it a Universal Basic Income when he proposed a guaranteed monthly income, apart from what many might already be earning on a job, for all adults. Yang was ridiculed for the idea. But none other than President Trump and his treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin, are pushing the very program Yang had pushed for. Not only that, they want checks in the mail to recipients immediately!

What's the Plan? The Other National Emergency That No One Is Talking About (Part 2)

We continue yesterday's discussion on how President Donald J. Trump, his administration, Congress and all levels of government are funding, and will continue to fund, scores of projects and initiatives across the nation to blunt coronavirus contagion and deaths in the United States.

For now, there's a steady stream of news to gladden the heart. The money is flowing to back Trump's epic battle with the virus and save American lives. But what will it cost? Where will it come from? What will be the true cost?

Neither Trump nor Congress will touch the subject.
