Leeds' legendary 20/20 Vision Recordings marks 30 years at the forefront with this new project, 'Full Circle', which takes the form of a series of records and events celebrating a fine legacy. Founded by Ralph Lawson and Carl Finlow in a Leeds farmhouse, 20/20 has since put out nearly 500 releases and 2,000 tracks in all. This latest features rare gems, remixes and unreleased tracks and kicks off with a showcase of classics reintroduced for a new generation. Highlights include Christian Loffler's melancholic 'York', Tuccillo's evocative 'Sabotage', Art of Tones' 'Praise', which is already a bonafide anthem for DJs like Honey Dijon, Wulf n Bear's debut 'Space Groover'. Great stuff.

toucan sounds starts 2025 with a collaboration between Abelson Live, aka Brian Abelson, and XHOSA, with the ‘Wanted To Know You’ EP landing on the label 14th February 2025. First up is the original House mix of Abelson Live and XHOSA’s ‘2 Know U’, a low-slung groove with bouncing chords and pumping drums that bring a timeless vibe while XHOSA’s vocal adds soul. Their Acid mix then layers in subtle 303 lines that bubble up through the mix and grow evermore central to the groove before XHOSA flips the original into a humid and steamy sound with smartly rated vocals shimmering about the mix next to spoken word snippets and seductive pads.

Next, ‘2 Know U’ is remixed by Solar System, consisting of Aaron Tripp and Brian Abelson, known for curating open-air, solar-powered parties in New York under the same monicker. They up the melodics as lush chords bring cosmic rays of light, the original vocal taking on a heavenly charm. Lastly, JWords steps up to remix Abelson Live and XHOSA’s original track with her jackin’ version featuring rugged drums and rave-ready whistles, which will blow up the 'floor next to the harmonised vocals.

Over the last 10 years, XHOSA has established herself as a trailblazing artist within the New York scene and beyond, playing anywhere from VIA FEST to SXSW. Here, she joins forces with Abelson Live, whose versatile sounds have appeared on labels like Beats in Space, Sinderlyn, and Love Injection (with Jennifer Vanilla) and once before on the celebrated Brooklyn label Toucan Sounds, where he worked with John Barera on their collaborative album, ‘The Arc’.

With Abelson Live & XHOSA’s ‘Wanted To Know You’ EP, toucan sounds once again showcase what New York House music is all about.

‘The Watchman EP’ is the debut project from Jim Brown, a future star in the deep electronic continuum. Jim has spent the last few years in the shadows, perfecting his craft and vision. This EP embodies creativity, character, and absolutely oozes atmosphere.

‘The Watchman’ is a smashing start to the EP - a rolling, deep techno track, with panning vocal chops and percussion swaying from ear to ear. There’s a real unique groove about this one, and it provides a truly hypnotic listen. ‘Zelkova’ is the next addition to the EP, and takes it down a gear for a downtempo, atmospheric masterclass. With crispy tops, moody synths and low subs, this track is all about immersion and atmosphere. Upon listening it’s impossible not to be enveloped in the deeper tones. ‘Railay’ is the final solo effort from Jim on this project, and takes the energies up to 100. Booming kicks at breakneck speed, spinning synthwork and rattling subs on this one make it a track fitting for any DJs USB. Last but not least, we have George NB’s flip of ‘The Watchman’. The remix takes the bpm’s up to 165, and is characterised with old-school breaks packed with groove. This flip grabs the elements and atmosphere from the original, and gives it a unique twist.

This project really embodies what we want to provide with Ascension. A move away from the short-form clutter that seems to be everywhere. A laser focus on immersion and atmosphere, across all sub-genres of electronica. A space for the heads, and for those who love the art of electronic music. White Noise is a tune that goes on a journey. Musically speaking, an endlessly building disco banger that is every bit as insistent and punchy as it is late night hazy and dance floor instigating. Kinetic percussion, synths, guitars and the brilliant string arranging of Sly5thAve layer in and out on top of the distinctly New York feeling rhythm section of Vito Roccoforte on drums and Mattie Safer on bass (bandmates from Poolside and The Rapture, and Brooklyn studiomates of Peter).

While the tune was originally a demo Peter sketched out in Mexico City and re built slowly with the live instrumentation in mind, it sat idle for some time until Kendra Morris knocked it out of the park with her vocal performance and clicked everything about the song into place. Kendra is a Colemine recording artist and known for her stellar work in the modern soul, rock, and r&b spaces, but the mirror ball proves to light her up just the same, and the ‘White Noise’ echoes of Donna Summer-esque vocal range combined with the lyrical content is as fresh as it is classic.

Says Kendra:

“I was totally inspired both melodically and lyrically by Peter Matson's disco palette of sound he created. I imagined being trapped inside an old television in the 70's wearing a fur coat and trying to sell stereos on late night programming.

The song is about those weird and wonderful nights out that really seem to begin after the rest of the world goes to bed.”

A warm welcome to Sonson, who’s delivering the goods with the fantastic “My Blues EP”.

The original took our hearts by storm with its silky-smooth live piano, effortlessly floating over a constantly driving, simple yet effective and uplifting groove work. So we immediately made plans for a full release with the talented Munich DJ and producer with whom we have been friends for years. It didn’t take long until Michael, Sonson’s real name, came up with the great idea of asking his old pal and French house don Franck Roger to remix the tune - an artist all of us deeply admire for his unique body of work and ongoing contribution to our scene (Real Tone, Earthrumental, countless nights at Paris’ Djoon club you name it). Luckily he’s been digging the tune and made two utterly great versions by adding his magic - the uplifting Earthrumental Mix that sticks with the piano and a Dubthrumental that fully lives up to its name. The package is rounded off by Sonson’s “My Dub” and “My Beat” versions and whereas the dub is a bit more stripped back, dropping off the piano while adding some trippy synth textures, the beat is just a perfect tool for the working DJ. Voila!
