  • 6 Skills That Will Increase Your Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is considered a much better predictor of success than pure intelligence. In many cases, it doesn't matter how intelligent you are.

You know plenty of people that possess average intelligence that are very successful. The struggling genius is quite common. There’s more to life than being able to do calculus in your head.

Making good decisions, communicating effectively, having positive relationships, and managing yourself well can be far more valuable and powerful than a genius-level IQ.

Boost your emotional intelligence with these strategies:

    1. Become an excellent listener.

Think about the best listener you know. You probably hold that person in high regard. Listening is a lost art that few people are interested in resurrecting.

    ● During your next conversation, notice what happens while you’re speaking. The other person is likely bored, distracted, and simply waiting to speak.

    ● You’ll do much better with people and have fewer misunderstandings if you put all of your attention on the other person during a conversation. They’ll even think that you’re a great conversationalist. Try it and see!

    2. Pause before you respond.

Think of all the times you wish you’d kept silent. Taking a moment to collect your thoughts can be a real advantage. You’ll save yourself a lot of grief if you give yourself the opportunity to respond wisely, or to not respond at all.

    ● Give yourself all the time you need to make an intelligent decision.

    3. Develop self-awareness.

Very few people are self-aware. We have little idea of how others perceive us or how we come across to them. Think about how odd it is to hear a recording of your own voice, or how you seem to look heavier in photos than you thought you were. That’s only the beginning!

    ● You might be significantly more rude or obnoxious than you think. Maybe you’re dismissive to others and don’t even know it.

    ● Ask someone you trust what they think your biggest problem is. You may be surprised by what you hear. You won’t like the answer, but you’ll know in your heart that it’s true.

  • 8 Beliefs of Mediocre Minds

Your beliefs impact your decisions and actions. Your beliefs are one of the foundational constructs that determine the outcomes in your life.

If you have beliefs that support a mediocre life, you can expect your life to be mediocre. It would be like trying to build a skyscraper on a foundation of 2x4s. Ineffective beliefs can’t support an awesome life that pleases you.

Eliminate these beliefs from your mind and free yourself to build the life you desire:

    1. It’s always been done that way.

When something has always been done a certain way, there’s likely to be another way that’s even better. Just because something has been done a certain way for a long time doesn’t mean you should just accept it.

    ● For example, everyone used to walk. Then the wheel was invented, and wagons and carriages were developed. Cars and airplanes eventually followed. Who knows what might be next?

    2. It’s not my fault. People with mediocre results in life make a habit of failing to take responsibility for their failures and misfortunes.

It’s always someone else’s fault, such as:

    ● “My boss hates me.”
    ● “I had terrible parents.”
    ● “I attract the wrong people.”
    ● “I have bad luck.”
    ● “I was born into an unfortunate situation.”

    ● Whether it’s your fault or not, the best policy is to take responsibility for your situation. It’s your only hope, because no one else is likely to save you.

  • 9 Things You Can Do Instead of Giving Up

One of the most important rules regarding success is that you can’t give up easily. There are always obstacles to overcome, and if you give up too soon, you’ll never get anywhere.

Think about the least and most successful people you know. The successful people you know are probably very perseverant. They give up on practically nothing. Unsuccessful people give up quite easily.

When the going gets tough, there are things you can do instead of giving up:

    1. Take a break.

Sometimes the best thing to do when things don’t seem to be going your way is to take a break. A break might mean taking an hour, a day, or a week away from your goals to catch your breath and regain a more effective perspective.

    2. Get advice.

When something isn’t working, the advice of an expert can be extremely helpful. It’s possible that your approach just requires a little tweaking. Or it might be that your approach is more than a little wrong. Advice from the right person can make a big difference.

    3. Learn.

If nothing is working, it might be time to sit down and educate yourself on what you’re trying to accomplish. A little more knowledge might be the cure for your current struggles. Enhance your expertise and then apply what you learn.

  • 10 Things You Can Do Now That Will Greatly Benefit Your Life in 10 Years

Just think how much different your life would be if you had done a few things differently 10 years ago.

    ● You could have been saving money for 10 years or learning to play the guitar.

    ● Exercising regularly for the last 10 years would have benefited your health.

    ● How profitable of a website could you have built if you had started 10 years ago?

The key to having a great life is to regularly spend time on things that will enhance your future.

You can’t travel back in time, but you can make the most of the next 10 years by taking advantage of these tips:

    1. Maintain a healthy weight.

Everyone has that skinny picture from high school. However, if you look around, there are far fewer middle-age adults that would be classified as skinny. There are a lot of health issues that can be avoided or minimized by maintaining a healthy weight.

    2. Save money.

A lack of savings is a major stressor for most people. Just think, if you had just started saving $100 a month 10 years ago, you’d have over $17,000 today. That assumes a 7% return.

    ● A little money saved each month can make a big difference over the years.

    3. Avoid consumer debt.

Most people have to finance a car or home. However, anything else you can’t afford to buy with cash could probably wait. Consumer debt is very expensive and ultimately very stressful.

    4. Set goals and reach them.

It’s possible to accomplish a lot in 10 years. Setting goals, reaching them, and then setting new goals will result in a very effective and fulfilling decade.

    5. Find a hobby that you love.

Spending 10 years on a hobby that you love will bring a lot of joy into your life. If your hobby is something like playing the piano that requires a lot of skill, you’ll be pretty good at it after 10 years.

    ● Hobbies can also be a great way of making friends and enhancing your social life.

  • 6 Things That Prevent You From Doing Your Best Work

Doing your best work takes more than just sitting down and working. There are many obstacles to producing high-quality output.

The best painter in the world won’t do his best work sitting in the corner at a loud party. An engineer isn’t likely to find a solution to a complex problem after a week of subpar sleep. You can’t even do a great job of mowing your grass if you’re preoccupied with your bills.

Your best work requires certain things. It also requires avoiding certain things. It also requires good conditions. The quality of your work improves as the quality of the conditions improve.

Avoid these things that prevent you from doing your best work:

    1. A lack of focus.

Keep your attention on your work and give it the priority it deserves. Try to put your worries aside and avoid daydreaming while you’re working. Put the focus of your life on your work if that’s what is necessary in your situation.

    2. Too many distractions.

Are you trying to work while keeping your eyes open for an important email and monitoring your social media feeds? Are you having a conversation with your children about doing their chores? Trying to watch a movie in the background? Thinking about your bills?

    ● The fewer distractions you have in your environment, the better your work will be.

  • 8 Qualities That Support an Optimal Mindset for Personal Growth

Maximizing your personal growth is a worthy pursuit. In fact, many people make personal development their primary purpose in life. But even if you just want to smooth up your rough edges, having an effective mindset for personal growth will make the process more enjoyable and your efforts more fruitful.

Your mindset can make all the difference!

Consider developing these qualities to optimize your growth:

    1. An open mind.

Personal growth requires considering new perspectives, ideas, habits, and beliefs. If you’re dead set on approaching the world in a particular way, you’re greatly limiting your growth. Only when you are open to all the various possibilities can your growth be maximized.

    ● Consider that if you already had an optimal perspective and approach to everything, you’d already have everything you want. You may be mistaken about multiple things. Are you willing to figure out what those things are?

    ● Are you open to the idea that you might change your objectives based on new things that you discover about the world and yourself?

    2. An interest in learning.

Are you willing to learn about goal setting? Overcoming fear? Discipline? Communication skills? Reading about new ideas? There’s a lot that you don’t know that you need to know if you’re going to become everything that you’re capable of being.

    3. The willingness to fail.

Trying new things requires failure. It’s rare and lucky to succeed at something the first time. Whether you’re learning to be a better public speaker, taking a class, or learning how to play the violin, there will be failure.

    ● Failure provides the opportunity to learn and then to apply that knowledge during future attempts.

  • Why a Mentor is Critical and How to Find One

Success is easier and faster with a mentor.

Maybe you want the satisfaction of pursuing your dream alone. Or maybe you’re embarrassed to reach out to a potential mentor or don’t even know where to begin looking.

Whether you want to master the piano, create a popular blog, or build a billion-dollar business, a mentor can smooth and expedite the process.

Consider these reasons why a mentor could be critical to your success:

    1. Mentors know people that matter.

Mentors know people that can be helpful on your journey.

    ● For example, let’s suppose you want to be a movie star. The right mentor will know successful actors, directors, writers, producers, and other people in the entertainment business.

    ● If you want to attend graduate school in the biological sciences, a good mentor will know successful scientists in academia and industry and people on admissions committees.

    2. Mentors know what matters.

A mentor has done what you want to do or is at least an expert on what it takes to be successful. Consider that many of the world’s greatest coaches weren’t necessarily successful themselves as players. However, they know how to make others successful.

    3. Mentors help you to avoid mistakes.

    Mistakes slow progress.

    ● There are different types of mistakes, such as: working on something that doesn’t matter, failing to give something the proper priority, doing the wrong thing, or doing the right thing improperly.

    ● Mentors direct your focus, so you can avoid mistakes. They also help to correct your mistakes.

    4. A mentor is an ally.

A mentor is always on your side. If you need a cheerleader, your mentor is there for you. A shoulder to cry on? Your mentor is available. Even your friends and family can come to resent your success, but your mentor is always happy when you’re successful.

    5. A mentor will push you.

We often fail to push ourselves when we manage ourselves. A mentor will push you to develop at a faster rate than you’re likely to push yourself.

    ● In some instances, your mentor might push you to be patient and slow down.

    6. A mentor saves time.

All of these advantages serve to save time. A mentor will help you to develop fully in less time. A mentor can shave years off the period of time it takes to be successful.

  • Why Your Fear of Success is Holding You Back

Fear of success? Fear of failure is something we can all understand, but fear of success? It might sound a little funny, but many people fear success even if they don’t realize it.

Success isn’t 100% positive, and there’s a part of you that understands that. Success brings attention, requests for help, and maybe even disappointment. It wouldn't be much fun to achieve your biggest goals and still feel unfulfilled.

Success makes your life easier in some ways and more challenging in others. Every situation has its advantages and disadvantages.

You might be suffering from a fear of success if you regularly sabotage yourself or have difficulty pursuing your dreams.

See how the fear of success can stop your progress in its tracks:

    1. Success requires you to be more than you’ve been demonstrating.

Our brains crave comfort. Comfort equals survival, which is your brain’s primary objective.

    ● Changing your life requires changing your behavior, mindset, and perhaps even your beliefs and values. Thinking about that can create discomfort.

    2. Success brings social pressure.

Success isn’t just a big bank account and glory.

Once you've started on your path to success, people look at you differently when you’re successful. In fact, many people that ignored you before will start paying attention.

    ● If you are making a lot of money, people will start asking you for financial help. Charities will start contacting you.

    ● Driving an expensive car or living in a big home draws attention, too.

    3. Success is new territory for you, and you fear the unknown.

You know what your current situation is like. You might not enjoy your current situation, but you know what to expect each day. Changing your life means dealing with new situations and new people. This can be unsettling to consider.

    4. You’re afraid of what you might become.

You might consider yourself to be a good person, but maybe you have some concerns about what you might do if you had more money and power.

    ● We’ve all seen characters in movies and books that change for the worse after achieving success. Or, you might personally know someone that underwent a negative transformation.

  • Why You’re Unable to Just Sit Down and Do Your Work

Have you ever had important things to do, but you just couldn’t make yourself do them? Sometimes it’s simple procrastination, but that’s not the only explanation that applies when you’re resisting your work. There can be a variety of things that are preventing you from taking the action you know you should take

Let’s get to the bottom of it.

Are one of these reasons keeping you from getting your work done?

    1. Your goals aren’t inspiring you.

If you can’t get yourself to write for your blog, start your online business, or begin on a big project at home, perhaps your goals aren’t the right goals for you.

    ● When you have inspiring goals, motivation is much easier to generate.

    2. You’re not clear on what you want to accomplish.

It’s hard to get busy when you only have a vague idea of what you need to do. Be crystal clear on your intention. We all know we have things to do, but are you certain of what exactly needs to be done?

    ● Our brains don’t like confusion or ambiguity. We reject uncertainty, so clarify your task until you’re certain of what you need to do.

    3. Fear of failure. Fear of failure is one of the greatest and most common obstacles to getting work done.

If you look ahead and see failure in your future, it’s very challenging to sit down and get busy.

    ● Consider, instead, what will happen if you succeed! Focus on this outcome.

    4. Your ability to focus is weak.

We have too many distractions in our lives these days. Our lives are overly complicated. Our ability to focus has atrophied.

    ● Practice focusing for short periods of time and your ability to focus will improve quite quickly.

  • A Beginner’s Guide to Using Writing Therapy to Enhance Personal Growth

What do you do when you’re feeling sad or low? Maybe you reach out to friends or stay in bed watching your favorite series on TV.

Have you ever considered turning to writing as a therapy?

Studies have shown that those who write about their most traumatic or stressful experiences experience better health outcomes.

The stories we tell ourselves give us meaning in our lives. Writing therapy helps you explore the stories you tell yourself, the feelings associated with those events, and what meanings we can draw from events.

Writing can be a powerful, low-cost, and easily accessible therapy. Getting your thoughts and words onto pages empowers you to work through difficulties.

Writing therapy can help you sort through your stories and feelings around grief, anxiety, life transitions, or even stress. Writing therapy gives you a safe space to track your progress and self-reflect.

While writing may not always be a complete replacement for therapy, it’s still a tool you can use to work through your thoughts. It’s also a tool that can complement your regular therapy appointments.

Writing therapy is a guided way for you to interact with and analyze events that happen in your life. Through writing therapy, you explore your beliefs around those events - and how your beliefs might trigger certain feelings.

Follow these journal prompts to start exploring your thoughts:

    1. Start your day with Morning Pages.

Morning Pages, a daily practice popularized by Julia Cameron, are three pages of unfiltered writing. This daily practice of filling three pages with your unfiltered thoughts can help clear your mind to start the day fresh.

    2. The WDEP Model (Wants, Doing, Evaluate, Plan).

The WDEP Model can help you think about what you want and whether or not you are making the choices needed to get what you want. It can help you feel more in control about your daily decisions.

    ● Wants. What do you want?

    ● Doing. What are you doing to get what you want?

    ● Evaluate. Is what you are doing helping you get to what you want?

    ● Plan. Can you make a more effective plan to get what you want?

    3. The ABC Model (Activating Event, Beliefs, Consequences).

We tend to think that activating events leads to consequences. This can help you explore your beliefs and reflect about your emotions.

    ● Activating Event. The event that triggers an emotion or thoughts.

    ● Beliefs. What you believe or think about the activating event. Our beliefs are the part that often subconsciously get overlooked.

    ● Consequences. The emotions we feel as a result of the activating event and our beliefs.
