After completing medical school and residency, Vivek Rao, MD, did something he thought he’d never do – he returned to his hometown of Odessa, to start his own medical practice. “As I got older, I realized how much the community has to offer. This is a good place to raise a family, and it's a place where you can really give back,” he said in a conversation with TMA’s Immediate Past President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, in the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast.

An allergist and immunologist, Dr. Rao comes from a multi-generational family of physicians. He followed in his father’s footsteps not only by choosing medicine as his profession, but by becoming involved in organized medicine. He serves on TMA’s Council on Legislation and the Texas Delegation to the American Medical Association. He said his goal is to preserve the practice of medicine for young people like his son, who might also become a doctor one day.

“I want them to grow up and be able to see an environment where if they decide they want to go into medicine that they'll be able to treat patients the way they want to treat them, with respect … be able to practice without interference from companies, from hospitals, from insurance plans,” said Dr. Rao.

Bernard Harris Jr., MD,’s professional journey took an unconventional turn. After becoming a physician, he set his eyes on the skies to pursue his childhood dream of being an astronaut. On a spacewalk during a 1995 mission, he became the first African American to do so.

In a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast with TMA’s Immediate Past President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, Dr. Harris talks about his journey and what he learned from his missions to space.

“Space is an opportunity for us to really see the earth the way that God wanted to: the people of the earth as one people working together,” he said.

He also spoke about how advances in space technology help patients. “As we have more opportunities in earth’s orbit, the moon, and beyond that … out of all the fields, I believe that medicine is going to reap the most benefit,” said Dr. Harris.

He provides an example in the podcast. “The imaging center systems that we use for looking at the surface of planets are now used to look inside the human body,” said Dr. Harris.

For Myphuong Theresa Phan, MD, the journey to medical school was a testament to perseverance. The Houston family and sports medicine physician said it took her six attempts to get accepted into medical school, but she never gave up. “I knew I wanted to be a doctor, so that dream never wavered, even if it got cloudy at times because of how difficult it was,” said Dr. Phan in a conversation with TMA’s Immediate Past President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, in the latest episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast.

While she dealt with the rejections in her professional journey, Dr. Phan also suffered a devastating personal loss – her best friend passed away in an accident. “It's a marker in my life in the same way, like 9/11 is a marker in our society,” she said.

As she reflects on her professional challenges and personal loss, Dr. Phan said those experiences have made her a better physician today because she is able to empathize with her patients’ struggles and grief.

Bradford Holland, MD, installed as the Texas Medical Association’s new president in April 2026, is focused on ensuring physicians are prominently involved in finding solutions to Texans’ health care needs.

“The public expects if we're going to have a health care solution, it should come from physicians. Bradford Holland, MD, was installed as the 161st president of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) in April 2026. The Waco otolaryngologist grew up in Colorado but made Texas home after relocating for medical school. Dr. Holland brings a unique perspective to his medical practice – as both a physician and patient.

Years ago he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and had to undergo surgery and chemotherapy for several years before he was able to beat it. “I've spent many, many hours in waiting rooms. I know what it's like to have a test and not get the results for an excruciatingly long time,” said Dr. Holland in a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast with TMA’s Immediate Past President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD.

Dr. Holland said his time as a patient gave him a new perspective of what it means to be a physician. For example, it influences how he breaks the news of difficult diagnoses like cancer to his own patients.

Rodney Young, MD, a family physician in Amarillo and TMA’s Board of Trustees member likes to wear many hats: He cares for patients, teaches aspiring doctors at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine (TTUHSC) in Amarillo and is active in organized medicine.

“Variety is the spice of life and it's also the spice of my career interests,” said Dr. Young in a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast with Texas Medical Association (TMA) President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD.

Dr. Young’s love for teaching began in high school and college when he tutored other students. After finishing residency, he joined TTUHSC and continues to work there, splitting his time between seeing patients and teaching students.

He is pleased knowing he is helping countless unknown patients because they will be cared for by his future physician students. “It's meaningful to medical educators that your life's work touches the lives of so many people that you'd never meet,” said Dr. Young.

A chance alphabetical choice of schools – picking a distant college whose name begins with “A” – shaped Dr. Young’s life and career trajectory, and he’s still pleased to call West Texas home.

He also stumbled into organized medicine and TMA somewhat by accident, but now he encourages physicians to make their voices heard and advocate for their profession.

“TMA provided great opportunities for me to … learn about the process of helping to shape public policy,” said Dr. Young.

Over decades of service to public health, David Lakey, MD, has seen everything from the Ebola outbreak in Dallas to natural disasters like Hurricane Ike. In a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast, Dr. Lakey – who served as commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services – tells TMA President Jayesh “Jay Shah, MD, about his experiences handling public health emergencies and what goes into managing a state-wide response.

“When you get that call to say, yeah, it's Ebola, and you're the first case in the United States ever, you take your pulse, you take a deep breath, and just say, all right, let's work through this,” said Dr. Lakey. “It's one of those months that I'll never forget.”

Dr. Lakey is now vice chancellor for health affairs and chief medical officer at The University of Texas System. He also is the presiding officer of the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium created by the Texas Legislature to improve the state’s mental health care system for children and adolescents.

“Access to mental health and early diagnosis is a leading public health challenge for our state,” said Dr. Lakey.

For more than a decade, Robert Rogers, MD, an allergist in Fort Worth, has been volunteering as a reading tutor for children. It all started when he joined a mentoring program 15 years ago and found many fifth graders were reading at a kindergarten level. “I realized that if these kids were going to have a hope of a better future, it was going to be because they were intentionally taught to read,” said Dr. Rogers in a conversation with Texas Medical Association (TMA) President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, in a new episode of the Let Doctors be Doctors podcast.

He soon discovered Fort Worth had no free programs that could help kids improve their reading skills. He sought partners to help him improve literacy, and more than a decade later Dr. Rogers continues to share his love of books and reading with children in the city. “We should not allow poverty, race, any other excuses to get in the way of the expectation that our system should teach every child to read,” said Dr. Rogers.

He is also very active with TMA’s Texas BookShare program, which helps physicians and county medical society alliances distribute books to children in their communities.

Amanda Mohammed-Strait, MD, still remembers the boy with no shoes walking to get medicine for his mother, a vision that changed her life’s path.

Traveling with her family as a youth and volunteering in other parts of the world and witnessing people suffer from lack of medical care helped inspire the Dallas family physician to choose medicine as her profession. Those experiences also have shaped her approach to how she practices medicine.

Dr. Mohammed-Strait is the community health and engagement lead physician at Oak Street Health. While she reaches out to connect with patients outside of her clinic at shelters and food pantries, she cares for mostly geriatric patients in her practice.

“I felt that it was really important to be able to reflect the needs of the community where we were opening up our clinic … and being able to learn more from the patients themselves,” said Dr. Mohammed-Strait in her conversation with TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, in the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast.

Dr. Mohammed-Strait also describes her passion for hosting TMA’s outreach programs like Walk with a Doc and Hard Hats for Little Heads.

Grace Farris, MD, is an internist and hospitalist physician in Austin. When she is not seeing patients, she is an artist, trying to portray complex topics like informed consent, the life of a medical student, and motherhood, through illustrations. She has published three graphic novels – books featuring cartoon panel illustrations.

In this podcast, discussing her path to becoming an artist, Dr. Farris said, “I didn't realize that I had this burning desire to make comics until it just began. And all of a sudden, I was off to the races.”
