For more than a decade, Robert Rogers, MD, an allergist in Fort Worth, has been volunteering as a reading tutor for children. It all started when he joined a mentoring program 15 years ago and found many fifth graders were reading at a kindergarten level. “I realized that if these kids were going to have a hope of a better future, it was going to be because they were intentionally taught to read,” said Dr. Rogers in a conversation with Texas Medical Association (TMA) President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, in a new episode of the Let Doctors be Doctors podcast.

He soon discovered Fort Worth had no free programs that could help kids improve their reading skills. He sought partners to help him improve literacy, and more than a decade later Dr. Rogers continues to share his love of books and reading with children in the city. “We should not allow poverty, race, any other excuses to get in the way of the expectation that our system should teach every child to read,” said Dr. Rogers.

He is also very active with TMA’s Texas BookShare program, which helps physicians and county medical society alliances distribute books to children in their communities.

Amanda Mohammed-Strait, MD, still remembers the boy with no shoes walking to get medicine for his mother, a vision that changed her life’s path.

Traveling with her family as a youth and volunteering in other parts of the world and witnessing people suffer from lack of medical care helped inspire the Dallas family physician to choose medicine as her profession. Those experiences also have shaped her approach to how she practices medicine.

Dr. Mohammed-Strait is the community health and engagement lead physician at Oak Street Health. While she reaches out to connect with patients outside of her clinic at shelters and food pantries, she cares for mostly geriatric patients in her practice.

“I felt that it was really important to be able to reflect the needs of the community where we were opening up our clinic … and being able to learn more from the patients themselves,” said Dr. Mohammed-Strait in her conversation with TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, in the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast.

Grace Farris, MD, is an internist and hospitalist physician in Austin. When she is not seeing patients, she is an artist, trying to portray complex topics like informed consent, the life of a medical student, and motherhood, through illustrations. She has published three graphic novels – books featuring cartoon panel illustrations.

Fifty years ago, internist Jayaram Naidu, MD, left his homeland of India to cross the globe in search of opportunity. He eventually arrived in Odessa, Texas to start his medical practice.

Would the community welcome the new doctor?

In a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast, Dr. Naidu acknowledges his early concerns.

“Starting your own practice, I was very anxious and nervous at that time,” Dr. Naidu told podcast host Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, president of the Texas Medical Association. “I didn't know how the people would receive me as a foreign doctor.”

The people of Odessa embraced him – so much that they ultimately named a street after him.

“I'm very happy with the community; the community has been the greatest support to me.”

He also shares the enlightening, though frightening, experience of being on the other side of the stethoscope – as a cancer patient – which influences his patient interactions now.

“Becoming a patient transformed me in a way no training ever can,” he said. “You need to have communication, compassion. You as a doctor still have the touch, a healing touch.”

For Nayeli Fuentes, MD, a family medicine resident in Tyler, Texas, the path to becoming a physician was a tough one. Her father worked three or four jobs so her family could make ends meet. They depended on the local food bank and their church for food and clothes. She said the struggles her parents went through motivated her to work hard toward her goal of becoming a physician.

“I remember my parents always just kind of avoided going to the doctor's office unless we really needed to,” said Dr. Fuentes. When she and her siblings were sick, they shared antibiotics and other medications because they could not afford health care.

Now that she is a physician she works in clinics that help low-income families. In her conversation with TMA President Jayesh Shah, MD, in the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast, she said her dream is to return to her hometown of Mount Pleasant to work as a physician there.

“I plan on going back. That's always been the goal. I do hope that we can continue making a difference through TMA, my position as a physician, and the rest of the community to help bring in those resources that weren't available when I was growing up in my hometown,” said Dr. Fuentes.

In a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors podcast, McAllen internist Lenore DePagter, DO, shares a deeply personal story about her son who was diagnosed with autism and his journey to graduate high school. Dr. DePagter tells TMA President Jayesh Shah, MD, her experiences guide her interactions with patients. She says when she cares for a child with complex medical needs, she draws from – and shares – her own personal insights.

“And you can just see that wave of relief on the parent's face that, ‘She understands what I'm going through,’” says Dr. DePagter.

The physician also describes how being involved in organized medicine helps her give back to the community and mentor the next generation of physicians.

“Of all the wonderful opportunities that have been given to me in my life, in my profession and in my career, they wouldn't be as meaningful to me if I was not able to give back,” says Dr. DePagter, who serves on TMA’s Board of Councilors.

“I have a very strong sense of service and of giving back.”

Fort Worth obstetrician-gynecologist Shanna Combs, MD, a chose a unique career before becoming a physician: She started as a professional ballet dancer after earning an undergraduate degree in the art.

“When I was getting ready to apply for college, I said to myself, ‘I'm going to study science for the rest of my life. So why don't I study something that I know I can't do forever?’” says Dr. Combs in a new episode of the Let Doctors be Doctors podcast.

After performing ballet on stage for three years, she shifted to pursue her true passion – becoming a physician.

In her conversation with TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, she describes the burnout physicians experience. “We as doctors put a backpack on and when people ask us to do something, we say, ‘Sure, throw it in the bag.’ We just keep doing that and eventually find ourselves falling over backwards,” says Dr. Combs.

To make sure she doesn’t feel overwhelmed, Dr. Combs trimmed her work schedule to four days per week. She also sees a therapist, takes time off to scuba dive, and attends Pilates classes.

In a new episode of the Let Doctors be Doctors podcast, Roxanne Tyroch, MD, member, TMA Independent Physician Practice committee describes her journey from caring for patients in a hospital to academic medicine to private practice. She says there came a time in her career when she no longer wanted to have a “transient relationship” with her patients.

“I wanted to have long-standing relationships with my patients and be accountable for their care and be able to celebrate the successes in our health care journey together,” said Dr. Tyroch in the podcast conversation with TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD.

Eddie Patton Jr., MD, a neurologist in Houston, spent a lot of time after work typing notes from his patient’’ visits, especially when the cases were complex. He is now using artificial intelligence (AI) to help speed up this process. He said AI can help with tasks that have little impact on patient care but could be done more efficiently. He discusses his interest in AI and how it has helped him free up time to spend with his family in new episode of the Let Doctors be Doctors podcast with TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD.

He also encourages young physicians to experiment with AI to see how it can help them in their practice. “It's not a matter of if AI is integrating into health care. It's a matter of when and how fast because it's happening,” he said.

In a new episode of the Let Doctors Be Doctors Podcast, TMA President Jayesh “Jay” Shah, MD, speaks with Amy Townsend, MD, a Bridge City family physician.

Dr. Townsend recalls her experience working in an administrative role at a hospital. She describes how the number of patients that physicians were required to treat “grew exponentially,” but the physicians lacked the resources needed to manage the additional workload.

“It really became apparent to me that it was not something I wanted to continue to participate in. I felt like I was ultimately part of the reason that my colleagues were experiencing burnout,” said Dr. Townsend.

Her advice to physicians who are feeling exhausted and burned out is to take action. “We can't look at the situation like we are victims … we have to act if we want the system to be different.”
