Asian stocks were mixed and U.S. equity futures slipped Monday after a Federal Reserve official flagged the possibility of sharper interest-rate increases and Chinese data signaled slower economic growth.
Shares rose in Japan and fluctuated in Australia, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 contracts edged lower. China and South Korea are shut for the Lunar New Year holiday. Hong Kong’s session is truncated.
The Fed’s hawkish pivot to fight inflation and an uneven corporate earnings season have contributed to intense volatility. U.S. stocks last week saw three of the biggest intraday reversals of the decade before ending little changed.
Fed Atlanta branch president Raphael Bostic told the Financial Times that a 50 basis-point rate increase or hikes at each policy meeting this year are options to fight inflation. But he said three quarter-point moves starting March are the most likely 2022 outcome. Bostic doesn’t vote on policy this year.

U.S. equity futures rose Friday after strong Apple Inc. earnings aided sentiment, while Asian stocks looked set to recover some of the losses sparked by the Federal Reserve’s pivot to tighter monetary policy.
Contracts on the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 were up about 1%. Apple Inc. rallied in extended trading on record sales that signaled it weathered supply-chain snarls. Australian shares rose, as did futures for Japan and Hong Kong.
U.S. shares Thursday ended lower in another volatile Wall Street session that saw the dollar jump. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 again failed to hold intraday rallies, while a gauge of U.S. small-caps slumped into a bear market.
Treasuries were mixed, with the 10-year yield dropping to 1.80% and the yield curve flatter. A dollar gauge pushed higher, in part after solid U.S. growth data reinforced expectations for Fed tightening to fight inflation. Oil advanced and gold held a retreat.

Asian stocks face a choppy open Thursday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled a March interest-rate liftoff and left open the possibility of hikes at each policy meeting. Treasuries slid, the dollar jumped and U.S. shares were mixed.
Australian equities climbed, while futures for Japan slipped and Hong Kong’s were steady. U.S. contracts pushed higher. The S&P 500 on Wednesday wiped out a gain of over 2% to close down and the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 erased almost all of a 3.5% rise.
Treasuries tumbled, particularly shorter maturities, and the gap between five- and 30-year yields was around the narrowest since early 2019. Global bonds now face losses, with the New Zealand 10-year yield hitting the highest since 2018. The dollar rallied. The yen and commodity-linked currencies were lower.
Powell reinforced the Fed’s determination to quell the highest inflation in a generation amid a robust economic recovery from the pandemic. The central bank also said it expects the process of balance-sheet reduction will commence after it has begun raising borrowing costs.

Asian stocks looked set for a choppy start Tuesday after U.S. shares wiped out a 4% rout to close higher in a wild session roiled by concerns over Federal Reserve policy tightening and geopolitical tension.
Futures for Japan, Australia and Hong Kong pointed lower earlier. Dip buyers left the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 in the green amid high volumes, a breathtaking turnaround of a U.S. selloff that at one point rivaled any of the last two years.
Treasuries were mixed and the yield curve steepened. An auction of two-year notes attracted the strongest demand since February 2020. Oil slid in New York.
The prospect of a Fed interest-rate hiking cycle and balance-sheet reduction to tackle inflation is rattling markets. Escalating U.S.-Russia tension over Ukraine has also encouraged demand for havens. A gauge of the dollar rose.
