  • Possible Black Swan and Grey Swan events for 2022 with Roger Chan, Dealing Manager for Global Markets

Welcome to Let the Money Talk podcast.

In this special episode, one of our Dealing Manager for Global Markets, Roger Chan underlines why it is so important to prepare for so-called black swan events that cause market crashes because they are sudden, overwhelming and unpredictable.

    In short summary,

A black swan is an extremely rare event with severe consequences. It cannot be predicted, though after the fact, many claim it should have been predictable.

Grey swan is a term used to describe a potentially very significant event whose possible occurrence may be predicted beforehand, but the probability of it occurring is considered small.

Here, we explore four potential black swan events and a positive grey swan event:

    1. The retake of Afghanistan prompts fears of the emergence of a safe haven for terrorists.
    2. Mother lode of cyberterrorism
    3. The reality of a $200 barrel of crude oil
    4. A deer caught in the headlights of runaway all-time-high inflation
    5. Grey Swan sighted! Possible all-time high for Chinese technology stocks

The declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) of the latest COVID-19 “variant of concern” Omicron on the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday caused the Dow Jones Index to plunge 905 points, or 2.5%. The S&P index fell 106.84 points, or 2.27%, while the Nasdaq Composite Index lost 353.57 points, or 2.2%.

The decline of the three major indices effectively marked their worst Black Friday performance since 1950.

Prior to this, governments worldwide had conducted extensive vaccination programs to safeguard their people. And countries were looking forward to opening their borders and economies with the resumption of travel between nations.

Families that had been separated for months were looking forward to reunite with loved ones. Everywhere there was a sense of “all might just be finally behind us”.

That was until COVID-19 gave us another jolt.

Asian stocks looked set to follow a bounce in the U.S. after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reassured investors the central bank will tackle inflation to extend the economic expansion.

Shares in Australia advanced and futures rose in Japan and Hong Kong.

U.S. contracts fluctuated after the S&P 500 halted a five-day slide and the Nasdaq 100 outperformed. Treasuries also found support after a solid three-year note sale. The yield on the 10-year note dipped, while the curve flattened.

The dollar declined and commodity-linked currencies like the Australian and Canadian dollars climbed alongside a jump in oil prices.

Powell told the Senate Banking Committee that officials won’t hesitate to act if needed to contain price pressures. He also said the Fed will probably start shrinking its balance sheet this year. He noted the runoff would be quicker than the last time the central bank shrank its balance sheet because the economy was in a much stronger position.

Asia stocks looked set to slip Tuesday after the S&P 500 closed lower for a fifth session, though a late U.S. rebound may tame losses.

Australian shares edged lower. Futures pointed to a modest decline in Hong Kong and Japan, which reopens after a holiday. U.S. contracts traded steady after the S&P 500 posted its longest losing streak since September, though dip buyers emerged to wipe out almost all its losses after sinking 2%. The Nasdaq 100 ended in the green after sliding as much as 2.7%.

The U.S. Treasury curve flattened as short-dated yields rose sharply with market-implied odds of a March rate hike edging higher. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicted four hikes this year, beginning that month. The dollar rose.

A key measure of U.S. inflation -- set to be released Wednesday -- is anticipated to have increased further in December, putting additional pressure on the central bank to tighten policy.

Stocks are set to start the week cautiously as investors brace for bond-market volatility and assess the economic hit from the rapidly spreading Covid omicron variant.

Treasury yields climbed across the board last week in a selloff sparked by Federal Reserve minutes signaling a willingness to start hiking rates as soon as March. The yield on the U.S. 10-year note touched the highest level in nearly two years. Cash Treasuries won’t trade in Asia because of the Japan holiday.
U.S. inflation data this week will be keenly watched as concerns grow the Fed is behind the curve in tackling elevated price pressures. U.S. employers added fewer staff than expected in December, but wages rose more than forecast, boosting the Fed’s case to tighten liquidity.

Asian stocks looked set for gains Friday after their U.S. peers steadied as investors mulled the Federal Reserve’s latest signal it will move aggressively if inflation remains elevated. Treasuries extended a decline. Futures pointed higher in Japan and shares climbed in Australia following Thursday’s selloff. U.S. futures saw modest gains. The S&P 500 closed little changed after attempting to rebound from a near 2% drop Wednesday sparked by Fed meeting minutes that suggested the central bank is ready to raise rates sooner and higher than previously expected. Treasury yields continued to climb, although the velocity of their ascent eased with the 10-year rate near 1.73%. The dollar was slightly stronger, while oil climbed to a seven-week high on supply constraints. The yen held overnight gains and the yuan retreated. Gold fell and Bitcoin remained under pressure.

Stocks in Asia are set to open weaker after a selloff in U.S. technology shares and Treasuries accelerated once Federal Reserve minutes signaled interest-rate hikes may be more aggressive than many had expected. Australian equities slipped at the open, while Japan futures fell. U.S. contracts dropped after the Nasdaq 100 tumbled the most since March as rising Treasury yields added to concerns over growth and profitability. The S&P 500 retreated as traders increased bets U.S. rates will increase at least three times this year. The yield on the U.S. 10-year note climbed to 1.71%, a level not seen since April. Overnight swaps markets moved to price in an 80% chance of a 25 basis-point hike at the Fed’s meeting in March. The dollar was little changed.

Stocks in Asia look set to open steady Wednesday as investors fret about interest rates increases that dragged down U.S. stocks from a record and extended a decline in Treasuries. Australian shares opened little changed. Futures ticked higher in Japan and dipped in Hong Kong. U.S. contracts were steady after the Nasdaq 100 underperformed amid a selloff in technology shares and the S&P 500 was little changed. The rout in U.S. Treasuries deepened for a second day amid increasing conviction the Federal Reserve will raise rates at least three times beginning in May to counter price pressures. Yields on long maturities climbed amid heavy supply of new corporate bonds following a year-end lull. The dollar was little changed, while the yen hit the lowest since January 2017.
