First and foremost, Ida Linehan Young is a grandmother to the most precious little boys, Parker and Samuel, a mother to three adult children, Sharon, Stacey, and Shawna, and a wife to Thomas. In her busy daily life, Ida works in the information technology sector of the federal government of Canada, and she volunteers her time in the community of Conception Bay South with the Kiwanis Club of Kelligrews.
Ida had a fascination with writing in her high school days, when she dabbled in poetry and essays. In 2012, she became serious about her writing with a story to tell, and that led to her memoir, No Turning Back: Surviving the Linehan Family Tragedy, in 2014. Having found a passion for writing and with a love of local history and lore, she published several historical fiction novels, Being Mary Ro (2018), The Promise (2019), and The Liars (2020).
With strong influences of the familial art of storytelling passed down by her father, Ed Linehan, and her maternal grandfather, Frank Power, Ida writes stories about her beloved province, Newfoundland and Labrador. She enjoys researching events of the late nineteenth century and weaving fictional characters through historical tales that complement that cultural richness and renews and regenerates interest in our storied past.

My guest is the perfect example of the rich storytelling culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. She says her love of the art of storytelling evolved from familial influences passed down to her from her father and her maternal grandfather. She’s doing an exceptional job of continuing the tradition.
Kathryn discusses with Ida her approach to writing a fictional series as well as how she finds inspiration for her books in historical documents. She shares writing tips and techniques that work well for her. This show is a delightful discussion with someone who truly loves every minute she is writing. In this show we will be focusing on her latest release The Liars.

Newfoundland Photographer K. Bruce Lane has been taking photographs since his parents gave him his first Brownie back in the seventies. His recent book is a compilation of photos from Dildo, NL.
Dildo is a community in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. This book offers a photographic tour of the charming, vibrant town located in Trinity Bay, about eighty kilometres west of St. John’s. Dildo’s unusual name has brought it a certain amount of notoriety. In August 2019, the American late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! focused on Dildo over a number of episodes. As part of the activity, which brought the small rural community immediate international fame, host Jimmy Kimmel was made honorary mayor of Dildo. Kimmel declared Hollywood as Dildo’s sister city.
Todd Boland is the research horticulturist at the Memorial University Botanical Garden. As a result of his love of gardening, he is the author of several books, including Wildflowers of Nova Scotia, Wildflowers of New Brunswick, Wildflowers and Ferns of Newfoundland, Trees and Shrubs of the Maritimes, Trees and Shrubs of Newfoundland and Labrador, Favourite Perennials for Atlantic Canada, and now Shrubs and Vines for Atlantic Canada.
Written specifically for Atlantic Canada, this guide gives you the tools and information you need to select, place, and care for the shrubs and climbers best suited to your garden.
Shrubs and vines make up the skeleton of a garden, providing structure, defining spaces, and contributing to privacy or windbreaks. Some are chosen for flamboyant floral displays, others for colourful leaves. But they can be tricky to grow and maintain in this region’s climate and soil conditions.
With over 40 years of gardening experience in Atlantic Canada, author Todd Boland has deep expertise in overcoming geographic challenges to build spectacular gardens. In Shrubs and Vines for Atlantic Canada, he shares this knowledge, along with hundreds of his own full-colour photographs to inspire and inform. This comprehensive guide includes at-a-glance lists of the best plants for acidic soils, seaside gardens, shady areas, etc., how to avoid common pests and pitfalls, and detailed insight into the best available cultivars for your zone.
Shrubs and Vines for Atlantic Canada will not be the only book by Todd Boland this year. Local gardeners are eagerly anticipating A Newfoundland Garden, a guide on navigating the specific challenges of Newfoundland’s weather and unique geology.

Back in 2009, 55 year old Evelyn Ramsay and her friend Peggy Parker, saddled up their Harleys and hit the open road. They shipped their bikes from Halifax, NS, to Calgary, AB, and set out on the trip of a lifetime through the USA. Two Women Two Harleys. It’s not a book, but it is a story.
Harry Ingram was born and raised in Arnold's Cove Placentia Bay, or as Ray Guy would call it, “That far greater bay”. Reciting and telling stories have always been a core element of Harry’s upbringing. In his younger years he was never shy of a joke, story or recitation at a family function or kitchen party. He has always enjoyed sharing the works of others who have paved the way in this genre, however in recent years he has been putting pen to paper and writing his own material. Harry has grown into an accomplished entertainer on various stages sharing his works alongside Hubert Furey, Dave Paddon and Dave Penny as the popular “From Stage to Stage” group and more recently with Ken Parsons as part of “The Liar’s Bench Show”
Justin B. Hodder wants to take his readers on an adventure around the world. His protagonist, Emily Owens, is an archaeologist who yearns for adventure and a chance to prove herself. Much like Justin, who decided to write a book and carved out the time between his busy schedule. He sourced editors, designers and a printer. It’s been quite a learning experience for him and he’s sharing his story with us today.
