  • Assessing Adaptive Physical Education in America with Dr. Scott McNamara

According to the CDC most school districts require schools to meet the physical education needs of students with disabilities by8:

    · Including accommodations in physical education in 504 plans or IEPs (98%).
    · Mainstreaming into regular physical education as appropriate (97%).
    · Providing adapted physical education as appropriate (91%).
Among schools that have students with disabilities, 91% include physical education in IEPs or 504 plans for these students.9
Among schools that have students with disabilities, 62% require students with long-term physical, medical, or cognitive disabilities to participate in physical education.9
However, 52% of schools exempted students with cognitive disability, and 86% exempted students with long-term physical and medical disability from physical education. Both percentages increased between 2000 and 2014.9
With all of this in mind how are we doing in ensuring students with disabilities remain physically active while at school?
Dr. Scott McNamara is an Assistant Professor Kinesiology Department at the University of Northern Iowa. He teaches physical education and adapts physical education (APE) courses. He has also developed a podcast entitled “What’s New in APE” Podcast which provides insight into the profession through interviews with panels of APE professionals. He joined me this week to discuss the current state of adaptive and physical education in America.

  • The Benefits of Game-Based Learning with Dr. Matthew Farber

Game-Based Learning plays a significant role in teaching by causing students to collaborate, communicate, interact, and work in teams. Strategic games strengthen the functioning of the brain. Gaming generates a dynamic which can inspire learners to develop skills and build an emotional connection to learning and subject matter. Dr. Matthew Farber, Ed.D. is an Assistant Professor of Technology, Innovation and Pedagogy (TIP) at the University of Northern Colorado, and founder of the Gaming SEL Lab. His research is at the intersection of game-based learning (GBL) and social and emotional learning (SEL). He studies affinity spaces of educators who use games in classrooms and how they afford student agency while also teaching skills of empathy, design thinking, and systems thinking. He also works in youth initiatives around game design as a form of self-expression. He joined myself and my identical twin brother Keith McShan to discuss the impact of Game-Based Learning.

  • How to Facilitate Easier Digital Learning

According to  educationdata.org  and the US Department of Education: 20% of college students whose classes were moved online during the pandemic indicated it was a major challenge to find a quiet place for online instruction 33% of post-secondary school administrators indicate they will continue to offer both remote and online course options even after their campuses have reopened and normal operations resumed. Which raises the question what sort of challenges does teaching a course primarily online cause for teachers and students alike?  For some answers I turned to some Wayne State University students who have a good grasp on the issue. Jeannetta M. Greer, Radiation Therapy Program Director, Lori Lucas, Lecturer Bilingual/Bicultural Education and Keith McShan  Ph.D. Candidate, Sports and Exercise Psychology are all enrolled in a class entitled “Facilitate digital learning” taught by Dr. Ke Zhang, Professor of Learning Design & Technology. They were all assigned to tackle The Course Renovation project.  Were they had to renovate a course.  They joined me this week to tell me about their work

  • Rejuvenation Through Reinvention with: Domenic Battistella

Experience can be a great teacher. This sentiment is certainly true for Domenic Battistella. By day he’s a financial services guy where he works with Startup tech companies. In pursuit of that business, “I'm an expert networker and connector as well as an engaged advocate in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.” He also has 3 crazy buy fun teenagers, an awesome fiancé, and 2 cats (a fat one and a scaredy cat). In his free time he’s a podcaster with varied interests. ” I host/co-host 2 podcasts, the Joe Schmo Sports Show and the Liquid Soap Box Podcast.” He's been a lifelong athlete and sports encyclopedia, which kind of helps with my sports podcast.” As a 2nd generation financial advisor specializing in business solutions, I help Startup technology companies protect their investment capital & continuity, build strong & resilient teams, and develop & reach their short & long-term business goals.” But this is his 4th career. ”I spent 10 years in nationally competitive USS swimming, learning the value of hard work, persistence, coaching, & teamwork. I spent 8 years as a champion policy debater in college & high school, honing public speaking, research, & strategy skills all while being deeply immersed in topics such as economics, foreign & domestic policy, law, and philosophy.” That’s just the tip of the iceberg of his story. Battistella joined me this week to tell me more.
