Most workplaces have a set schedule to which its employees adhere to. For some aviation areas, such schedules are in a constant state of flux due to manpower shortages or an over demanding flight schedule.  This leads to working long hours and having unpredictable work schedules.  There's a saying "don't be flexible, be fluid" and this couldn't be more true when it comes to ever changing schedules like in high demand industries.  In many cases, you're expected to jump when called upon and anything outside of what is demanded/expected of you doesn't exist or isn't relevant enough to justify slowing down or missing work.
