This week on Let's Talk Ed, Zahi interviews Brandon Delvo to explore his perspective on crafting a successful communication and marketing framework for a rural college that serves a vast and sparsely populated geographic area.
I ask Brandon about the approaches and practical tips that are helping him spread the word about the college to attract students of all ages and all interests. Brandon is battling the attraction of high paying jobs in the oil extraction industry, which are delaying (or preventing) the entrance of a large portion of the population into higher education.
Brandon shares his thoughts on how to get the person to the door while maintaining trust within the community. The key to success, according to Brandon, is accountability and being an honest broker. He also believes that the word of mouth will remain the cornerstone of a successful communication strategy for a college.
Join us on Let’s Talk Ed as we dive into the world of education, innovation, and the future of learning. Together, we can spark a radical change to redefine education for the next generations.

Safety on college campuses continues to be a significant concern for colleges and universities. In this episode of Let's Talk Ed, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde interview Brad Smith who has been involved in and researching college campus safety and security for over a decade.
Colleges and universities attempt to ensure safety and security n their campuses while endeavoring to provide a welcoming, friendly, and inclusive environment, with the aim of keeping them open and embedded within their community. This week, we will explore strategies and best practices for: preparing and responding to active killer situations, shedding light on the importance of campus-wide safety drills, communication, personal responsibility, and the role of security personnel in keeping students and staff safe.
Talking to Brad Smith, we address campus safety planning, including preparations for addressing the unthinkable, such as active killer situations or drug-related overdose incidents. In recent years, the issue of drugs on campus has become prominent. Therefore, we discuss the need to prepare employees to recognize overdose situations, administer first aid, including CPR (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation) and Naloxone (Narcan®) nasal sprays, while having contacted first responders. Moreover, we talk about the need to ensure ample availability of first aid kits that include Naloxone throughout facilities for easy and rapid access. Additionally, we talk about the need to have communicative tools, including campus phones, that can provide location information for first responders in cases of emergency.
Balancing safety and a welcoming environment may prove challenging, but not mutually exclusive. In our conversation, we will share insights on how campuses can maintain a secure environment without sacrificing their open, welcoming, and inclusive setting. Also, we emphasize the need for each person on campus to be conscious of potential hazards and survey the safety options of every new environment they find themselves in. For that reason, it is critical to empower each individual to play an active role in their own safety and the safety of others.
Join us for this crucial discussion on college campus safety, where we provide practical advice and actionable steps to create a secure, welcoming, and resilient campus community.

With higher education continuing to evolve, institutions are increasingly turning to various social media to connect with students, and the community, in new and meaningful ways. Join us; Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde from Let’s Talk Ed; as we explore the use of different social media, from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to newer platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or Snapchat. This week, we shed light on how and why social media is increasingly employed in college outreach efforts.
We underline the increasingly critical role of social media in focusing on authentic materials and student-generated content. We also consider how these tools empower students to share their experiences, projects, and perspectives. By doing this, institutions end up creating a dynamic and engaging community that uses online tools to communicate, excite, teach, and link students, families, the broader community, staff, and faculty.
As with every new endeavor, social media use is in many cases an afterthought, rather than a well-planned strategy. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of building the right staffing and technology structures to effectively implement social media outreach. We stress the need to allocate commensurate funding for social media outreach to succeed, as investment in these resources is critical to a seamless and impactful connection with students and the community at large.
Additionally, in this series we explore the potentially game-changing role of short video formats in instruction. Whether it is instructors creating targeted and engaging video content, or it is students capitalizing on the medium for class projects, well done short videos may be effective tool in the modern educational arsenal. Learn how they can enhance the learning experience and captivate students' attention.
Join us to unravel the exciting possibilities of social media in higher education outreach, offering insights, strategies, and inspiration for educators and institutions looking to make a meaningful impact in the digital age. Don't miss out on this discussion that could transform the way you approach student engagement and outreach.
