  • How Open Educational Resources Lower College Costs and Break Down Barriers

On Let's Talk Ed this week, Zahi Atallah, Kirby Lund, and Chris Forde explore the transformative impact of Open Educational Resources (OER) on college costs, access, and student success. We describe the the intent behind OER and how it has already revolutionized education by providing universal access to high-quality learning materials while alleviating the financial burden on students. We discuss whether there are meaningful differences in quality, accessibility, or effectiveness?

OERs are generating a change in the landscape of educational publishing. Even private publishers are entering the OER arena, attempting to secure their share of the market. But what does it mean for students, faculty, and the future of educational resources? We also explore how multimodal OERs enhance the learning of students by blending the visual, auditory, written, and kinesthetic opportunities.

One of the key advantages of an OERis its lasting availability. Unlike access codes that expire, OER materials remain accessible even after a course is completed, empowering students to revisit their learning resources whenever they need. They could also be upgraded and updated without the need to purchase new editions.

Student access to college and the cost of education weigh heavily on students and families. Additionally, textbook alone may limit the effectiveness of the learning for students. In contrast, OERs offer effective alternatives that have already reshaped college access for many, and increased learning and retention for millions.

  • Heeding Employer Needs is Key to How Colleges Help Graduates Achieve Greater Social and Economic Mobility

This week on Let's Talk Ed, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde discuss the ongoing question: "Does College Education STILL Fuel the American Dream of Upward Mobility?”. In it, we explore the intersection of education, economics, and social mobility.

We start by examining the facts on the social and economic mobility of the average college graduates compared to those who didn't pursue higher education. We contrast the significant disparities and highlight how a college education CAN be a game-changer in the pursuit of upward social and economic mobility to many. However, we stress that colleges should focus on reducing the college debt incurred by students and increase the training on soft and employability skills required by the job market.

Beyond just students acquiring credentials, we stress the paramount importance of college education being aligned to the actual needs of the job market, and specifically focused on the employers’ perceived skills gaps. From our perspective, empowering graduates with the appropriate skills and knowledge can significantly enhance their prospects for upward mobility. Moreover, such tools are likely to increase the competitiveness of the US, and its position as a leader in innovation and productivity.

This discussion cannot be had with addressing the ever looming issue of student debt. We emphasize how critical it is for colleges to effectively address the financial burden students undertake to access higher education. We implore institutions to go beyond the words of support and scholarships, and to systemically and systematically address the escalating cost of college education. We believe that the completion of education and the subsequent upward social and economic mobility is hampered for many by the weight of student debt. We also advocate strongly for massive changes in the way higher education operates.

Join us for this conversation on the vital role college education plays in the pursuit of the American Dream, the responsibilities of educational institutions, and the impact of student debt on upward mobility.
