Join us Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde from Let's Talk Ed as we embark on a passionate (a rant really!) discussion on the pressing issue of the soaring cost of college education.
We start with an unfiltered discussion as we peel the layers covering the expenses shaping the educational landscape. We are focused on changing college education to benefit: our society, our communities, our employers, the innovative nature of the workforce needs, and the competitiveness of the US. We touch on the realities of employment and compare them to the choices that colleges are doing (or not really!).
We follow it by diving into the deep abyss, aka the cost of education. We delve into the factors driving the seemingly unstoppable escalation in education expenses. We explore the consequences for students, families, and the broader society especially in the rural parts of the US.
We finish the series with what we hope is a turn toward change and improvements. We propose a vision of a framework to transform and empower education through an affordable learning. A more expensive education reduces access for many, even with student loans. All of this at a time when enhancing inclusivity is not just a question of equity, but a solution to the dire needs in economic innovation and competitiveness.
Subscribe, Like, and Share to support the cause of an innovative and empowering higher education! Let's Talk Ed needs YOU to be part of the revolution in education. Together, we can build a stronger, more competitive workforce, fostering innovation and ensuring global competitiveness.

In this series on Let’s Talk Ed, Chris Forde and Zahi Atallah are joined by Kirby Lund, to discuss the evolving dynamics of education. Specifically, we come together to explore the delicate balance between STEM and liberal arts education. In the past few decades there has been a push for STEM at the expense of liberal arts education. Furthermore, politicians continue devaluing the significance of the humanities education at a time when the US is reeling for a lack of teachers, daycare workers, psychologists and counselors, social workers, and other critical humanities-based lines of careers. This is compounded by the widespread concern about the gaps in critical critical thinking and prevalence of massive mis/disinformation on many fronts.
We start by exploring the critical need for a holistic approach that goes beyond STEM, fostering a well-rounded education for a richer and more profound learning experience. We focus on how humanities and liberal arts create a well-rounded workforce and society. We also lament the major disparities in income based on the choice of humanities majors in colleges, despite their critical nature to our society.
In the second segment, we explore the pathway from college to careers at a time when many research universities are refocusing their interest on linking education and students to careers. We remind the listeners about John Dewey's philosophy on the purpose of education. A philosophy that emphasizes that education is “life itself”, as well as a method of learning by doing, an apprenticeship of sorts. We explore how the contemporary purpose of college education had shifted away form a preparation for careers.
In our third segment, we tackle the question of what we think society would look like without humanities education. In this discussion, we scrutinize the consequences of neglecting the humanities and the essential role this line of education plays in shaping a critically thinking citizenry of socially aware individuals, who are discerning and communicate effectively.
We would like to hear you thoughts on the push for STEM on the expense of humanities and liberal arts education. Do you see this dichotomy? Do you agree with its impact on our society?

This week on Let’s Talk Ed, Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde explore the crucial role of student life in enhancing college retention and success. We try to describe the positive impact of activities outside the classroom on the retention and success of students. We highlight the importance of building cohorts, developing enjoyable activities, and instituting student clubs and government.
In the first segment, we explore the power of community building. We describe how engaging activities and shared experiences foster a sense of belonging, ultimately contributing to greater student success. This organic creation of a safety net for and by students contributes to providing students with learning communities, and for a fluid support network.
In the second segment we discuss the importance of the holistic learning and empowerment for students. For us, extracurricular involvement, real-world experiences, and personal development contribute to a more fulfilling and successful college journey. Student retention and completion tend to be enhanced by going beyond books and classrooms. And it is our job to create such engaging opportunities for all of our students regardless of modalities and localities.
In this segment, we also share practical insights and actionable advice. We suggest strategies for students to not only endure but thrive throughout their college experience, leading to long-term success. The more students are engaged with others at their institution, the better their chances of succeeding in their education, and possibly beyond college.
Finally, in our third segment, we address the importance of a vibrant student life to recruitment. Chris compares his college visit to his Alma Matter over 25 years ago, to one he took a prospective student on to the same institution. Students who are happy and engaged at a college are by far the most important ambassadors for that institution.
Don't miss out on this lively discussion that goes beyond academics, to identify how student life directly and positively contributes to college retention and success.

On Let’s Talk Ed this week, Zahi Atallah invites Kirby Lund to a discussion about the impact of plagiarism in higher education, the reasons behind it, and how teachers could safeguard against it, especially in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Plagiarism is possibly was old as education. But, how pervasive is it? What encourages it? And can we as educators do something about it?
In the first segment, explore the motivations behind academic misconduct. We propose factors influencing students' choice of plagiarism in academic settings. Is it all on the students? Do we, educators, have a hand in it? Do cultural differences have anything to do with this phenomenon? Do high stakes exams and assignments incentivize plagiarism? Is it always the students’ faulty decision-making, or do life challenges play a role in the decision to plagiarize?
Subsequently, we explore the ever-evolving landscape of education, especially with the advent of the age of artificial intelligence, which follows the age of the search engines. We take our conversation to the intersection of technology and academic integrity. Kirby and I analyze how AI is shaping the dynamic nature of plagiarism and its impact on education.
In the final segment, we attempt to provide practical strategies to navigate the educational challenges presented by AI. We do not believe that students always going to plagiarize, and are not guilty because they are students. Moreover, we believe that online and remote instruction does not necessarily equate with cheating. We propose innovative approaches to foster a culture of a student’s ownership of the education, while incentivizing originality and fostering academic honesty in education.
Join our discussion on the topic of plagiarism in the age of AI. On Let’s Talk Ed, we go beyond the surface. We offer a deep dive into the complex relationship between students, educators, and learning. We also, would love to hear your opinions on our topics and conversations. What are your thoughts on plagiarism in the age of AI?
