In this episode of Let's Talk Media, host Vedant Akhauri speaks with Olly Dee - a science fiction author and member of the LGBTQ+ community - about the importance of representation in the genre.
They discuss how science fiction can provide a sense of hope and belonging for those who feel othered, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals. Olly shares their early experiences with science fiction, noting the impact of books like "A Wrinkle in Time" on them. They also highlight the significance of seeing oneself reflected in future narratives, emphasizing that representation should go beyond coming-out stories and portray the full spectrum of LGBTQ+ experiences.
The conversation then shifts to the lack of happy endings for LGBTQ+ characters in many science fiction works, which Olly identifies as a harmful trend. They advocate for more intersectionality in science fiction, calling for stories that showcase characters with diverse identities and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community. Olly also touches on the positive influence of shows like Steven Universe, which feature relatable and complex LGBTQ+ characters, and shares a personal anecdote about their early encounter with a gender-fluid character in a short story.
They also discuss Olly's debut novel, including "Squire of Soul 2," which can be found here.

An impromptu episode I recorded on my phone about the role of media in shaping the 2024 U.S presidential election between Donald Trump (R) and Kamala Harris (D). This was recorded BEFORE the election, including predictions of how the election and onwards could play out for the media landscape.
For Episode NINETY, I'm joined by Melissa Kim Corter. Melissa is a Jungian Depth Psychologist and international bestselling author known for her expertise in the shadow side of the personality, blending human psychology with symbols found in movies and Grimm fairy tales, and forensics.
She explains how, contrary to popular belief, watching scarry movies could also be good for your mental health. She also gives her OPINION on using horror and thriller films in psychotherapy. It's a perfect exploration of scary movies through a psychological lens, examining the impact of scary movies on the ego, any leftover trauma, and the nervous system.
Films we discuss: Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Halloween, Carrie 1976, Joker, superhero films, and The Shining.

Disclaimer: This is an opinion show. For those interested, any testing of ones psychological triggers should be done with caution and at their own risk. This may not work for everyone, depending on ones mental health and sensitivity to specific triggers and dark topics. Some films can also be more severe and frequent in causing discomfort and triggers than others. You probably have a good idea of what content you can and can't handle, so Melissa's opinion is not to serve as blanket advice.#depthpsychology #horrorfilms #filmpodcast #mediapodcast
It's The Godfather meets The Da Vinci Code. Two Italian sons, linked by the real-life disappearance of a masterpiece painting from Caravaggio, are dragged into the dark underbelly of the art world. This puts them to the test of loyalty and honor. How far are they willing to go, no matter the cost?
That's a brief synopsis of the fiction novel, House of Honor, published in June 2024. I interview the author, Margaret Philbrick, about the books' inspiration, characters, themes, publication journey, and parallels between its main character Orazio Bordoni and the famous Italian painter, Caravaggio.
More information about Margaret's background and her additional works can be found here.
