Melba begins to enact her evil anti-Holden plot. It involves killing a lot of people who aren't Holden. The aftermath leaves Holden a wanted man in the entire solar system. Luckily, his ship is right next to a convenient exit from the solar system: The Ring.

Holden tries to get his crew as far from the Ring as possible, and do it without attracting attention. He is not good at avoiding danger or publicity, so he ends up heading directly toward the Ring with a documentary crew aboard. Melba, Anna, and Bull also head toward the ring for reasons  respectively evil, philosophical, and loyal.

Holden's effort to avoid the Ring is not going well because it appears to be inside his head. Melba demonstrates her ability to enforce the terms of a deal. Bull gets an unpleasant promotion and demotion. Anna must decide between her family or adventure, and given the genre of this book the choice is obvious.

Somebody must go aboard the Agatha King to face a gauntlet of horrors and save humanity. Luckily Holden is there and that's his whole deal. Then Amos, Prax, and Bobbie go to Io to dispense violence and receive closure.

The crew of the Rocinante meet Avasarala and Bobbie. Holden and Bobbie team up to make a plan to get out of their predicament: a battle, then a battle, followed by a battle.

Avasarala learns that the UN has sent a squadron of destroyers to destroy the Rocinante. So she sends Bobbie to commandeer their space yacht, which she does, and it is awesome. Meanwhile Holden and his crew have The Talk.

Avasarala figures out the nefarious plot, and gets sent to Ganymede for her trouble (with Bobby). Meanwhile Holden gets fired, which solves most of his problems.

A series of escapes: Holden's crew escapes from their Earthling captors, then they escape from the doomed Ganymede station, then Naomi escapes from her relationship with the emotionally damaged Holden. They don't completely escape from the protomolecule, though.

Bobbie goes to a meeting so boring she quits her job, career, and planet. Holden and his crew of mostly-expendables shoots their way into the secret lab where Mei was taken, find even more destruction than they themselves caused, then shoot their way back out.

It's a meeting extravaganza! Bobbie travels to Earth for a diplomatic meeting, where she meets Avasarala. Then Prax meets Holden and Amos, and takes them to meet his hacker friend, whose face Amos soon meets with a can of chicken.
