LGBT In The Ring

Hello, Lovelies! Required Reading, our series all about conversations in media, particularly pro wrestling and cinema, is back. Every episode, I pick a wrestling match and my close friend and past collaborator Hollis picks a film for discussion with one another, with both fitting our own personal definition of the show's title.

This month, we honor Bray Wyatt by discussing the Firefly Funhouse match between himself and John Cena in conversation with George Romero's somewhat forgotten noir-thriller Bruiser. We unpack both pieces' reflections on identity, deconstruction of self, masculinity and entitlement while reveling in two works of art that remain relatively divisive to this day.

As always, spoliers aplenty in our discussion.

Every episode, I pick a wrestling match and my close friend and past collaborator Hollis picks a film for discussion with one another, with both fitting our own personal definition of the show's title.

This month, we celebrate the life of a true pro wrestling legend: Terry Funk. We relive Funk's first retirement match from 1983, the transcendent encounter between The Funks and Stan Hansen and Terry Gordy, before treating ourselves to a different kind of breakdown of sorts of the 1989 barfight karate, hypermasculinity as farce classic Roadhouse. Terry Funk and spin kicks forever!
