  • Name

Genesis 6:1-7 The Hebrew word translated “renown” is “shem” and most often is translated “name.” In the time of Noah, men were busied making a name for themselves rather than glorifying the name of the Lord.
Genesis 11:1-9 “Let us make for ourselves a name” was the concern rather than glorifying the name of Yahweh. Devastation was caused in humanity due to his self-centered desire to make a name for himself.
Deuteronomy 32:1-4; Psalm 113:1-ff The name of Yahweh is to be praised, exalted, glorified, and held on high.
Genesis 12:1-7 Abraham was one of three great men that were given a great name by God.
1 Chronicles 17:1-14 God promised David that He would give him a great name, and indeed that is exactly what happened.
Matthew 1:1, 17 Abraham and David represent the two great covenants, the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants, and Jesus represents the new covenant and the fulfillment of all the covenants.
Philippians 2:-5-6 The serpent, Eve, and Adam all strived to have equality with God; Jesus did not.
7-11 God gave Jesus a name that is above every name, and everyone in heaven and earth will bow before him.
Revelation 3:12 Jesus will be given a new name when the Kingdom comes.
Isaiah 7:14 His name will be Immanuel. Perhaps this is part of his new name.
Isaiah 9:6 He was never called these appellations. Perhaps when the Kingdom comes, he will.
Revelations 2:17 Do not be concerned with making a name for yourself; rather, glorify the name of Yahweh and Jesus.

  • Busy Doing What?

“How are you doing?” he asked. The response, “I am very busy so I’m doing good.” Conversations like this one are not uncommon in our very busy world today. We have connected busyness with doing well as if it were some kind of virtue. With all the advance information and communication technology available, it seems we should be less busy. As we begin a New Year, taking time to consider how we spend our time and what keeps us so busy would be prudent.
Romans 13:8-14 – The most important concern is always love. How do we spend the precious moments of our life, centered in selfishness or love?
1John 4:11 – Debt promotes slavery the only thing we should owe is love because of God’s love for us we owe it to love others.
1Thessalonians 5:1-11 – We are to “awaken from the sleep” of indifference, hard heartedness, or antipathy that selfishness brings. We are tempted to waste our lives busied with activity of nothingness. Actives that waste our life and time are often center in self and not love for God or our fellowman. The salvation that will be realized when Christ returns is closer now than when we first believed.
1Peter 4:7-11 – Sober is possessing properly controlled faculties, even-tempered, well balanced. Time is needed for prayer, meditation, reading, serving and giving.
Ephesians 5:1-18 – Dissipation is the process of slowly disappearing or becoming less; the act of using all or a lot of money, time, etc., in a foolish way; behavior that shows you are interested only in pleasure, money, etc.
19-21 – Be busy in godliness and helping others to do the same.
    1Corinthians 7:25-35 – Live for God.
Isaiah 58:13 and 14 – The Sabbath was not just a Mosaic ordinance it is far more as it was instituted at the creation as a pattern for godly living.

  • Where Is He Born King of the Jews?

    Matthew 2:1-2
“After” Jesus was born…magi from the east arrived. How long after? In the account recorded in Luke chapter two, at the birth of Jesus, shepherds came to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph with a newborn baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger (Luke 2:16). In this record in Matthew, the magi found a young child with his mother in the house (Matthew 2:11). The arrival of the magi could have occurred as much as two years after the event in Luke chapter two (Matthew 2:16).

“Magi from the east” – The word “magi” is the from the Greek word “magos”. They were not Hebrew; they were from the East. Most likely, they were men from the area of Babylon and Persia, men skilled in the science of astronomy and astrology. How did these men from an Eastern religion come to understand that a “king of the Jews” had been born? Perhaps the book of Daniel provides insight (Daniel 1:20-21; 2:47-48).

“His Star” – a phenomenon – a super bright star in the sky, or an astronomical occurrence that these magi interpreted to signify a king of the Jews was born? There is no indication that anyone else saw this star, nor is the brightness of the star ever mentioned, only its significance.

“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews” – This is what “His” star signified to the magi.

    Matthew 2:3
King Herod and all Jerusalem were troubled. Herod and rulers in Jerusalem had a respect for these magi from the East.
    Matthew 2:4-6
Herod inquired as to where “the Messiah” was to be born. There was an understanding that the Messiah, the Christ, was to be king of Jews. The birth place of the one who was to rule God’s people was prophetically declared by the prophet Micah (4:2) – Bethlehem.
    Matthew 2:7
Herod inquired as to when the star appeared. The magi could have been observing this star for as much as two years (Matthew 2:11).
    Matthew 2:8-11
They came to Bethlehem and found a young child with his mother, Mary, in a house. They presented gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They worshipped him. The Greek word for worship is proskuneo. It means to kneel or prostrate, to do homage, or make obeisance. Among Orientals, esp. the Persians, it meant to fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence. The son of David, the king of the Jews, was to receive such reverence (Psalm 72).
Matthew 2:12-15 – God warned the magi and Joseph in a dream to depart. Joseph and Mary went to Egypt.
Matthew 2:16-18 – Herod slaughtered all the male children in Bethlehem from 2 years old and younger based on his inquiry of the magi.
Mathew 2:19-23 Mary and Joseph returned to Israel and went back to Nazareth of Galilee.

  • Birth of Christ

Luke 1:26 – Gabriel and Mary
    1. Gabriel is mentioned in Daniel 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19; and 1:26.
    2. Gabriel stands in the presence of God (Luke 1:19). The Greek word for “stands” means to wait before a superior.
    3. Gabriel is one of only two angels named in the Bible. The other is Michael.
    4. The Bible doesn’t call Gabriel the “archangel.” The Book of Tobit (of Catholic and Orthodox canon) identifies the angels as archangels, by tradition not the Bible.
    5. Gabriel looks like a man. The name Gabriel means “man of God” or “strength of God.”
    6. Gabriel scares people.
    7. He anticipates Jesus. Gabriel relays prophecy concerning “Messiah the Prince” to Daniel. He tells Zacharias that John the Baptist will be a forerunner before the Lord, and he tells Mary that her son will be called “the Son of the Most High.”
    Matthew 1:18-25 Angel and Joseph
Mark 6:3 – Jesus had four brothers and at least two sisters.
23 – Isaiah 7:14 – Immanuel means “with us is God.”
Luke 1:41-45 – Elizabeth and Mary
46-56 – This section is called the Song of Mary or the Magnificat (from its opening word in the Latin translation).

    2 Samuel 7:26
Luke 1:39-45 – Elizabeth, moved by spirit; 67-79 – Zacharias, filled with spirit; 2:25-32 – Simeon had the spirit upon him; Mary is not said to have the spirit’s influence.

The young woman, Mary, must have understood the Scriptures well.

  • Birth Prophecies

Luke 1:67 – Zacharias’ words are inspired by God, and they primarily pertain to the Messiah.
68 – A common feature about prophecy is to speak in the present about things that have not yet happened. Jesus was still three months from birth.
69 – He speaks of Jesus, not John, because of the reference to the house of David, and John was from the house of Aaron.
    1 Chronicles 17:1-ff; Psalm 89; Jeremiah 33:19-32
    71 – Quoted from Psalm 106:7-12
75 – The two important Kingdom covenants connected with the birth of Jesus are the Abrahamic and Davidic, and both are mentioned in this prophecy.
Genesis 22:15-17 – God promised, cut a covenant, and swore to Abraham that He would fulfill the promise made all relating to the coming Kingdom.
76 – The prophecy turns to John. Malachi 3:1
79 – Isaiah 9:1-7 The prophecy ends by returning to the coming of the Messiah.
