  • Biblical Confession

Psalm 32:5 Acknowledge sin, stop hiding, and confess transgressions.
1 John 1:8-10 “Confess” is the Greek homologeo and literally means “same word.” What you say with your mouth (inner talk) corresponds to the truth in the Word and to your heart.
Ephesians 4:25 – “Put away lying, speak truth one with another.”

Homologeo – Words of your mouth = what is in your heart = the truth of the Bible. Your words are not empty, superficial, shallow, or feigned.

Hebrews 11:13 This is what they said; this is what they believed.
Hebrews 13:15 “Thanks” is homologeo, so it means confession of His name.
Roman 10:9 – As we confess with our mouth, we solidify in our heart. There is a strong connection between confession and belief which is not absolute but is consistent. We should be vitally concerned about what we say.
Hebrews 3:1; 4:14 Confess that Jesus Christ is your high priest.

Biblical confession and positive affirmation are not the same; rather, most often they are the opposite. Positive affirmations are often directed toward self, not toward God’s Word. In such cases, people build castles in the sky.

When we confess evil, contradictions to the Word, negatives, not only do we root them into our hearts, but we inform the devil of what we are thinking. He cannot read your mind, so he does not know if his suggestions are effective until we speak.

Psalm 71:15 and 24 Speak His words that praise Him.
Proverbs 13:3; 21:23 We often think of proverbs like this referring to the effect our words have on other people but even more on ourselves.
Proverbs 12:18 and 19; 15:4; 18:20-23 We must not only claim God’s Word, but also learn to speak or confess His word because it is very powerful. We confess our faith in God’s Word. We must be careful not to get lost in confessing what everyone else confesses, the daily news.
Sometimes when we confess with our mouths things pondered, they become cemented in to our heart and reality. This is true with both the negative and positive.
I can remember much more biblical information than other information because most often what I study and learn I speak to others and or teach it thereby solidifying it in my mind.
Hebrews 10:23-25; Ephesians 4:29 Minister to your fellow man by words of biblical affirmation

  • How Is Your Heart?

1 Samuel 16:7 Jesse’s son David was the one God chose because of his heart.
1 Chronicles 28:9 – Many years later, at the end of David’s life, he exhorted his son, Solomon.
1 Chronicles 29:17-19 – When David anointed Solomon before the people, his prayer reflected the importance of the heart.
2 Chronicles 6:30 – God alone knows the hearts of men.
Jeremiah 17:9 and 10 – God searches the heart and deals with man accordingly.
    Psalms 10:17; 27:14; 73:26; 86:11; 119:32; 141:4; 51:10
Ephesians 4:17-19 The focus of a man’s eyes determines what is in his heart. The eyes are the windows of the heart. We are encouraged to have our focus upon God and not on lust…. The Bible contains record after record of God dealing with man according to their hearts. Those with good hearts receive His blessings, while those with hard or evil hearts, His cursing.
    Exodus 4:21; 7:3, 13, and 14, 22; 8:15, 19, 32; 9:12, 34, and 35; 10:1, 20, 27; 11:10; 14:4, 8 Pharaoh’s heart was hardened.
Matthew 6:22 – To avoid hardheartedness, we must shun sensual desires and eagerly pursue godliness. We must remain focused on one thing and not be divided between God and the world in which we live. If we value the things of God, the things of God will be in our hearts.
    Psalm 119:2, 10, 34, 58, 69, and 145 – David stood out because of his whole-heartedness.
Psalm 38:1-10 – David’s genuine, sincere devotion to God along with his mournful core – penetrating repentance for sin – are seen in this psalm.

6:1-18 Watch yourself that you do not forget Yahweh.
8:1-5 Yahweh humbled them so that they would know that Yahweh was their God and that they should depend on Him.
6-11 Beware that you do not forget Yahweh.
14 When the heart becomes proud, people forget Yahweh their God.
20 If you forget Him, you will perish.
Hosea 2:13 Israel indeed forgot Yahweh and chased after false gods.
13:1-3 Morning cloud, dew, chaff, and smoke − all are very temporary and fade away quickly.
    6 They forgot Him.
13 Israel is likened to a mother in labor, then the unborn son to the mother.
The son did not come to the opening of the womb. God brought punishment [childbirth pain] on Israel so they might be reborn to follow Him as He desired, but they were foolish not to grasp the opportunity.
14 Had they responded, they could have been reborn. They did not, so He would not save them. However, in the future he would through Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:42-58 In Christ, we can be reborn to eternal life, but we must not forget Him.

  • Gospel

Acts 2:14-16 Peter explained what happened by quoting the Scripture from Joel 2:28
21 – The prophecy was about the beginning of the church age and the end of the church age when Christ returns. A big part of the gospel is the return of Jesus Christ when the Kingdom of God will begin. Most churches today confuse the gospel by wrong teaching that eternal life begins with death.
23 – That which was not understood throughout the ages because it was kept secret was now revealed. Even the apostles did not understand when Jesus directly told them. Luke 9:24 and 25
25-28 – Psalm 16, David spoke of the resurrection that is also part of the gospel. Jesus was the first person resurrected and as such is a type for those who will be when he returns. He is the first fruit of the resurrection.
30 – Psalm 132:11 Jesus sitting on the throne of David is also part of the gospel.
34 – Psalm 110:1 Jesus now is at the right hand of God in heaven until the day he returns to take the throne of David here on earth.
36 – The heart of the gospel is Jesus is Lord, the Christ. “Christ” and “Messiah” mean the anointed one
39 – At the time Peter spoke, he did not understand the full meaning of the words he spoke, just as with many of the prophets who went before him. “All who are far off” included the Gentiles.
40 – We indeed live in a perverse generation, and the only way out is the lordship of Jesus Christ.
47 – The people were deeply moved, and their faith became everything to them. Radical change and commitment occurred.
3:19 Forgiveness of sins is also part of the gospel.
3:13-26 The time of refreshing and the period of restoration of all things is for those who believed when the Kingdom comes.

  • Preaching the Kingdom of God

    Acts 1:1-3
While on the earth for forty days after the resurrection, Jesus spoke to the apostles about things concerning the Kingdom of God. The book of Acts opens with Jesus speaking about things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. The book of Acts ends with Paul preaching the Kingdom of God (Acts 28:31).
The message of the gospel of the Kingdom of God was the message that Jesus preached during his ministry on earth.

Matthew 6:33 Seek first the Kingdom of God.

Mark 1:14-15 – Jesus came preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is at hand, or the Kingdom of God is near.

Mark 4:1-34 Jesus spoke in parables about things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

    Mark 9:1-8

Peter, James, and John at the Mount of Transfiguration were able to see a vision of Jesus in his glorified state. They got to “see the kingdom God after it has come with power.”

    Mark 10:14-16

Humility as a little child is a requirement to enter the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 5:3; 18:1-4 – The phrase “kingdom of heaven” is unique to the book of Matthew. In Matthew, the word “heaven” is used metaphorically as the place where God dwells.)

    Mark 10:17-30

Here, Jesus equates entering the “kingdom of God” with inheriting “eternal life.” This was the message of the gospel that Jesus preached. It was not all about receiving things in this life, but the overall concern of Jesus, the message he preached, was that which brings a person eternal life – or life in the age to come.

Luke 9:1-2 – Jesus sent out the twelve during his time on the earth to preach this same message – the Kingdom of God. Along with proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, they were granted authority to heal and bring deliverance.

    Luke 17:20-30

The Pharisees questioned as to when the Kingdom of God was coming. They didn’t understand that Jesus was the key to the Kingdom of God and he was standing in their midst. There is a period that first has to take place, and the Son of Man must first suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. We need to watch and be ready as no man knows the day that Jesus will return.

    Acts 1:1-11

The message is the same for us today. We are to be witnesses of Christ and preach the Kingdom of God. Today, Jesus is seated at the right hand of God, waiting for the day when he will return and usher in the Kingdom of God on earth. We have been endued with power from on high, having received the promise of the Father, the holy spirit. This enables us to be witnesses of the resurrected Christ unto the remotest part of the earth!

  • I Press On

Romans 8:18-25 A clear understanding and constant focus upon the Kingdom are essential because in this age we endure suffering.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Psalm 73:25-28 When our focus is on the task and not the goal, life can become difficult and wearing; likewise, focus on the things seen rather than the things not seen causes weariness.
Philippians 3:7-16 To move forward, we must forget the things that are behind whether positive or negative.

Burnout, lassitude, disillusionment, apathy are commonplace when our focus is on self, others, or the world around us; whereas, refreshment, rejuvenation, and revitalization come from focus upon God, our Lord, and our hope.

1 Timothy 6:6-12 Lusting for gain in this world will also drain you. Ours is a fight but not one we do on our own. God is with us and so is Jesus.
Hebrews 6:1-8 We move forward or back but never stay the same.
Hebrews 12:1-3 Jesus is our example.
1 Peter 1:3 and 13-25 Press on. Do not give up. The reward at the end is too great, and the life we have now is rich.

  • Authority in the Name

Power and authority in the name of Yahweh

Yahweh is the eternal, everlasting God who was, who is, and who is to come. He is the only true, all powerful God. His name was to be hallowed. It is glorious. The name of Yahweh was to be exalted. Yahweh is powerful. Deuteronomy 32:3; Ps 8:9; Ps 29:1-4; Ps 34:3; Ps 148:1ff

The name of Yahweh is a strong tower (Pr 18:10).

    • The priests ministered in the name of Yahweh (Deu 18:5; 21:5)

    • A true prophet of God spoke in the name of Yahweh (Deu 18:18-22)
    • David the king evoked the name of Yahweh in defeating Goliath (1 Sam 17:45). As king, he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh (1 Chr 16:2).

Jesus was given a name that would be above all others

The name “Jesus” (Yashua) means Yahweh is salvation (Matthew 1:21; Luke 1:31-33).

The prophets spoke of one that would be coming in the name of Yahweh. This one would stand in the strength of Yahweh, in the majesty of the name of Yahweh. The King would be blessed forever. His throne would be forever and ever. He would be anointed above his fellows. His name would be remembered and praised forever and ever.

    Psalm 118:22-26
    Micah 5:1-4
    Psalm 45:1-7, 17

Jesus hallowed the name of his Father, Yahweh (Matthew 6:9). He walked in the power and authority that God had given him. Mark 2:1-12

Jesus came in the name of Yahweh. Mark 11:7-10
Jesus gave his disciples authority (Matthew 10:1). They cast out demons in his name. Luke 10:17
Because Jesus humbled himself by becoming obedient to the death on the cross, God highly exalted his name above all others. Philippians 2:9-11

Jesus has given us authority in his name, which carries the authority of Yahweh

    John 17:11-12

John 14:13-14; 15:7 – Abide in Christ. Ask anything in his name!
    Mark 16:17-18
Acts 2:38 – Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and you will receive the gift of holy spirit.
Acts 3:6 – In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.
Acts 16:18 – Paul said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.”

Invoking the name of Jesus is not magic words. It is to be a lifestyle of discipleship, where one follows the words of Jesus. Matthew 7:21-23; Acts 19:13-17

Matthew 28:18-19 – All power has been given to Jesus in heaven and earth. We have the authority in Christ to make disciples of all nations!

  • Conquering with Christ

    Self-help Industry
    – People want to conquer: fear, doubt, anger, hatred, sexual frustration, powerlessness, relationship problems, depression, poverty
    – Recidivism: tendency to relapse into previous condition

    The Roman Empire

    – “To plunder, butcher, steal, these things they misname empire: they make a desolation and they call it peace.” –Tacitus (Agricola)
    – Crucifixion was standard procedure for conquering revolutionaries.

    Jesus conquers, but how?

    – Revelation 4 reveals God’s throne room.
    – Revelation 5 introduces Christ.
    – Revelation 5:5-14 – He surrendered to conquer. He trusted God completely

2:7 …To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.'

2:11 …The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.'

2:17 …To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.'

2:26-27 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.

3:5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.

3:12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

3:21 The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

    1. Through Christ God has already won the battle.

    2. Face it, call it out, confess it, get real.
    3. Surrender admitting you can’t but God can.
    4. Trust God to empower you.
    5. Take practical steps to conquer.

Jesus’ teachings were radical, the opposite of our normal, yet comprise everything necessary for “the good life” that we all desire. Alcoholics Anonymous and the numerous other Twelve Step programs have their spiritual roots in the Bible–specifically in the Sermon on the Mount (Jesus’ first teaching), 1Corinthians 13, and the book of James. Inside Out brings to light the biblical perspective AA’s pioneers developed, practiced, and proved effective. Students experienced the following from participation in the class: A New and Better Life — The life with God is a unique, exciting adventure and superior in many ways to the ordinary mundane existence. Jesus said it well: “I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10Peace of Mind — God’s acceptance and forgiveness eliminate insecurities, anxiety, fear, and shame. Jesus, the Prince of peace, brings peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.” John 14:27 Love and Belonging — The security and comfort of belonging to God and His family is the most satisfying reality anyone can enjoy. You are loved and valued. Purposeful and Meaningful Life that Honors God and Serves Others — You can make a difference!
