Throughout "The Story" we see God’s central desire is to have a people with who he can dwell in relationship and through whom he can reveal himself to the world. In Chapter 5 (Exodus 19-40), God presents his people with his commands which outline his expectations for this covenant community – how to relate to him and how to relate to other people. Later on in "The Story", Jesus would explain the commandments this way in Mark 12 – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

This week we hear the story of Moses, a Hebrew raised in the Egyptian royal court, who is chosen by God to be a spokesperson for the Israelite people. After God shows his power through plagues, the Egyptians release the Israelites from slavery. The freed people travel in the desert headed for the land God has promised them. Instead of faithfully following the God who has saved them from enslavement, the Israelites soon complain, even to the extent of wishing they were still in Egypt. Similarly, we doubt God’s goodness and presence in our lives. Even when our faith wavers, God’s faithfulness does not.

The story of Joseph tells us who God is, how God operates, and what God thinks of humanity. God uses the difficult circumstances of Joseph’s life to move his kingdom forward. Joseph’s story reminds us that God works for the good of those who love him.

Continuing on the journey through “The Story”, “God Builds a Nation” focuses on the story of Abraham and Sarah. After humanity’s fall into sin and the great flood, the story of God’s plan to reestablish fellowship with his children continues through the creation of a nation through Abraham and Sarah, an old, infertile couple. Though Abraham and Sarah face doubt and frustration, God’s faithfulness weaves through the narrative of their story and the larger story.

This year, Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church is embarking on a journey through the Bible using "The Story", an easy-to-read version of the Bible formatted like a novel.

Repeated throughout the story of creation are the words "it was good." This narrative sets the stage for the rest of the story by reiterating God's goodness, reflected in God's creation, and by establishing God as the one who decides what is good. Doubt about God's goodness enters the story and repeatedly unfolds as sin - humans placing themselves in God's position.

In Romans, scripture says we are all children of God. As children of God, the Bible is a collection of family stories that tell us where we came from, who we are, and how faithful God is. The hope of this sermon series is that by reading through "The Story", you will discover the connections to your personal story and that God’s story will become your story. This summer we’ve been walking through various spiritual disciplines and how discipleship causes us to live our lives differently. This week, we discuss the spiritual discipline of study, using the examination of scripture to draw us closer to God. As we study scripture, we can ask two questions: What is Jesus saying to us? What are we going to do about it?

In "Come to the Waters" sermon series, we’ve been working through spiritual disciplines designed to draw us closer to Christ. We might think spiritual disciplines are meant to make us somber and serious. However, celebration is a spiritual discipline and joy is a byproduct of being connected with God. What do we have to celebrate? God is good.
